The Ristolainen issue is a moot point. He's gonna make the team this year and will be our 2nd ROY defenseman in four years.

GO SABRES!!!

Thanks guys. Just so I can put this to bed (in my own head), players sign a contract to play in the CHL I assume? And that contract runs until the season you turn 20? Otherwise there'd be no reason for players to say "screw you, CHL, I'm gone."

The CHL/OHL/QMJHL and there might be one I am missing have agrements in place the prohibit players from playing in the AHL until they are 20. It protects the legues from losing basically everyone who is even remotely good once they get drafted by the NHL

The CHL is composed of the Q, OHL, and WHL.

You realize it's 2013, right?

2011-12 is one season, 2012-13 is another. He's now here to start the 2013-14 season. It's been two years.

Let me spell this out. He was drafted in 2011. He had a commitment in Finland (I think it was the army) for the 2012 year. That leaves us to where we are now, 2013. This was exactly the plan he told us he was committed to. He said he was committed for the following year (2012). No changes or sudden declarations of "play me or I'm gone".

And yes, although I'm the oldest member of this board, I do know what year it is. My dream is that the Sabres win a Cup before I start forgetting that.

Just in case it was missed before, does anyone know why Foligno isn't a part of this camp? He's still on his entry level deal.

I'm pretty sure they know how "developed" Foligno is. Same as Ennis a few? years back. He didn't have to go but went to mentor the guys a bit.

Okay but Ristolainen isn't saying "play me or I'm gone" he is saying he thinks he has a contract with his home team. If he makes the Sabres this season he stays if not he will play 1 more season in the Fin league.

Forgive the rant, but here goes:

I'm not happy with the way Ratso has declared Buffalo or bust. If he doesn't make the big team, he says he has a contract in Finland and he'll play there. Armia too had a prior commitment to his homeland.

What happened to the good soldier? Shoot me down but I don't like the way these European players think. Unless they're a shining superstar, they should be told what to do by us, be in our system first. WE should tell THEM where to go and what to do in order to develop in the way we want them to develop. And have an allegience to us first and forget about the home country. You are a professional now. You are a Buffalo Sabre now and you should bleed Sabre blue. I don't give a rat's ass about their prior commitments. They should be our property and we should ship 'em to Rochester or the WHL or whatever we want, not have to wait, 2-3 years for them to finally decide they're ready.

This sort of thing intensifies the feeling that Ratso doesn't want to come here. I saw how overjoyed he was when his name was called as our #1 draft choice. He's pushing us around already and unless he has it his own way, he goes home, 5,000 miles away. A safe and comfortable distance from the grind and control of professional daily development.

It also gives me the feeling the Buffalo Sabres are a bunch of beggars willing to be kicked around by 18 year olds. Weak management, poor choices.

This is also my point. He is "property" of the Sabres but now is going to tell us where and how he will develop as a player if he doesn't make the team. And with the 543 defensemen we already have, he's forcing our hand.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

Abnout 5 people have tried to explain that he may have a contract that forbids him from playing in the AHL. If he has a contract that says he can only come to NA to play in the NHL then he has to abide by the terms of the contract. There are international ice hockey agreements in place that require these contracts be honored.

Which sounds like something that wouldn't hurt to have at this camp every year. I wish the team would say something about why Foligno isn't there (if they haven't already). That and I'm not sure he's that much more developed than other 2 year pro hockey vets like McNabb. There's still a lot to be learned there.

Yes, but the key phrase here is "may have". I have to believe that the Sabres (who are know to be extra cautious with Europeans) would have known about that as they have in the past. I therefore put the onus on Risto.

I can't believe that before training camp and the preseason begins so many people are just automatically assuming that Ristolainen is going to be on this team.

If he comes here and earns it, and is one of our best defenders, then fine. But the kid is 18 years old, going to be asked to go into the corner with 32 year old men in NHL (and please dont tell me he played against men in Finland, that is quite irrelevant when comparing them to the best league in the world).

Even if this kid shows he isn't scared, I'd still have him back in Finland this year, and probably also in Rochester next year. Not only is the kid just 18 years old, but he hasn't played the North American game. He will have some major adjustments to make. I'd rather have him do it in a place where it can be a slow progression, instead of putting him on an NHL roster where he'll get schooled lose his confidence.

Again, if he comes here and looks great, then fine. But it is pretty ignorant to just assume he is going to be here. Just because 1 or 2 players jump right to the NHL from the draft now doesn't mean we should expect every 1st round draft pick of the Sabres to do that.

And I'd rather have him in Rochester under our tutelage so we can mark is progress as well as have him adjust to the smaller ice surface. The competition at the AHL level will be challenging enough for him as well.

Armia was drafted in 2011. His commitment was for the 2011-12 season. Then he also played the 2012-13 year. The army thing has no specific time commitment. You can do that much later (Mikko Koivu did his last summer).

I don't disagree. I don't agree with this calling somebody "property" thing, but that's just because it sounds bad.

But it's the system I hate. I think that, when you enter the draft, all prior commitments should either be shattered or you should have to be done with all prior commitments/contracts.

(But then this gets tricky when players would have to sign new contracts with CHL teams after they don't make it into the NHL immediately so there'd have to be a better solution).

That would never happen anyways, though, because these pro sports get off and taking kids out of their home and pushing them to the pros (especially when you see 16 years olds playing professionally overseas).

Onus on Risto for what? He either has a contract or he doesn't. Now, maybe the kid is mixed up about his contract situation. I could see that. He is 18 afterall. And presumably he has an agent to handle that sort of thing. But he either has a contract or he doesn't. and if he does, if anyone has an onus, it is the Sabres to be very aware of his contract status pre-draft day.

Fortunately slavery ( to own humans as property) is not what we do today. Where he plays is his decision. If he wants to play in Finland until he is ready, we have to accept it.

I think, if we would have known this before, we would have changed our pick, because we want to participate in the development of our players.

Also, Sabres' 1st round draft pick Rasmus Ristolainen joins Bulldog at 4pm

That should be interesting. Two guys who both struggle with the English language. LOL
