josie Posted July 5, 2016 Report Posted July 5, 2016 (edited) :P Only about 13 miles for me today since my legs were already tired from hiking a bunch at Rocky Mtn National Park yesterday. So pretty, though. Wow, beautiful. So jealous! One of my friends is up camping/hiking in Banff in the Canadian rockies and I begged him to pack me in his suitcase and take me along. Been bouldering a lot more, went kayaking yesterday, try to go hiking around here on my own once a week. Bouldering on my own without my friends is a strange experience. Usually we take a couple hours and support/tease each other as we take turns on the walls. It's a lot of fun. On my own... I bust my arms up way quicker and get stuck in my head. I tried this one route a good 7 or 8 times, and there's a section of it I simply cannot manage. It's just out of reach without jumping, which I can't really do yet (hanging by a finger). Group of tall guys all struggle up it, watch me do it one more time, "hey, I think you're too short. Sorry". Eyyy eff off man, I don't want to let my height be an excuse! Oh well. A weekend of 4,500 macho men playing paintball in PA awaits. All the girls in our group bailed, and I'll be one of maybe 20-30 women playing this weekend. Pray for me. Given some comments I've received in past years (and getting spit on), I'm genuinely a little worried. Edited July 5, 2016 by Josie914 Quote

I don't think my upper body strength is up to par yet and I'm afraid I'd embarrass myself! Quote
Cereal Posted July 6, 2016 Report Posted July 6, 2016 Wow, good on you... I haven't dared to try anything like bouldering. I don't think my upper body strength is up to par yet and I'm afraid I'd embarrass myself! Theoretically, for beginner climbers, men usually have the upper-hand initially, because they can brute-force (a.k.a. "dude-climb") up routes using strength alone. But, females actually learn proper technique, balance, etc. quicker because they can't typically rely on strength alone, at least from the outset. Flexibility is also an important trait for climbing, and many times, females have the upper edge on this. Although... For me (a dude), my flexibility (in addition to my +4" ape index) is actually quite good compared to most people, so I have improved pretty quickly since I got into climbing more earnestly last summer. I don't think my upper body strength is up to par yet and I'm afraid I'd embarrass myself! That is exactly how I felt. Going with a few friends helps. And I'm still embarrassed when there's a lot of people because 90% of the time you're sitting watching everyone else. And I only ever go during the summer at the university place and it's just mostly hardcore climber people. During the schoolyear I'm afraid I'd run into my students.... in my spandex. Nope. Theoretically, for beginner climbers, men usually have the upper-hand initially, because they can brute-force (a.k.a. "dude-climb") up routes using strength alone. Ah, the power dude climbing. That's what made me so grumpy the other day- I was practically doing the splits and a heel hook to get my body up this damn route and these lanky mofos just power jumped their way up it with their long stupid gorilla arms (weren't rock climbers, a bunch of lacrosse dudes or something I think) I try to get the balance right. It's not as intuitive as it sounds. I'm always flagging the wrong way or making a route needlessly complicated. My friends are all good climber dudes. One of them is about 6'5", another about 5'7", both thin and wiry, and the other a stockier built 5'9". It's really helped me to watch how the three of them approach the same problem. Gotta take a break from it this week- back up in top level aerial hoop and trapeze after about 4 months of working back up to it- can't bust my hands and arms up between those classes. And ooh! I have little abs starting to show! I'm really excited about those. Quote

ubkev Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 Off of work for the weekend. Josie and I are headed to PA bright and early tomorrow morning for a weekend of sweating. Stop by and say hi. You'll be 45 minutes from my house. Actually, don't. I'll be home in NY for the first time this year. My buddy is coming in from Chicago, and my parents would probably like to see me for a couple days. Have fun paintballing! Should be a blast. Quote
Doohicksie Posted July 8, 2016 Report Posted July 8, 2016 33 miles at 14.4 mph average. Pretty good for an old guy like me. Airfield Falls Downtown Fort Worth down below there Quote
JJFIVEOH Posted July 8, 2016 Report Posted July 8, 2016 Nice average! Stay out of Dallas. Quote
Doohicksie Posted July 8, 2016 Report Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) Yeah I got home and found out all hell was breaking loose an hour to the east. :( My minister's wife and son were at the protest. They're stuck in Dallas at a hotel. Edited July 8, 2016 by Robin Egg Quote
Doohicksie Posted July 9, 2016 Report Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) Another 53 miles on this morning's breakfast ride. Our club ride consisted of exactly 3 riders. There's a popular charity ride this weekend, plus they opened up the local Reserve Base/Naval Air Station for people to ride up and down the runway so a bunch of people did that. A couple who didn't ride joined us for breakfast. Then I walked two and a half miles with the dogs. It was pretty hot. The beagle in particular didn't do well in the heat. (She's getting old.) Afterward I had brisket tacos. The guy in the food truck brought a paper boat filled with brisket to each of the dogs. They're so spoiled. I think I sweated 5 lb. of water during the walk. biodork Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Ha! Like what a "girl's bike" would have been, back when? Maybe... mine has a really steep angle to the top tube, and I've seen plenty of cruiser / European style step-through bikes, but Robin's just looked really funny until I realized why. :) Quote

Today's adventure was hiking my first 14er, Mt Bierstadt. The trailhead begins around 11,600 ft and covers 2400 ft in elevation in 3.5 miles (each way). We reached the summit in just under 3 hours and came back doen in under 2. Pretty scrambly at the top, but gorgeous views and perfect weather. The wildflowers were quite something as well. The one guy in our group wanted to do it, but it was cold and windy at the top and none of us had slept much last night, so we tabled the idea. But perhaps will try the reverse (Evans to Bierstadt) at some point! Quote

But perhaps will try the reverse (Evans to Bierstadt) at some point! Yeah, that might even be better. You just need to start really early and bring a lot of water + food. Plus, pay attention to where you need to be on Sawtooth (can be deadly). Quote
