Doohicksie
I saw that. It's inspiration for this thread, but could go in the other as well. As of today, I'm at the Big 4-0. Sabel79
Took my four year old daughter to our local indoor rock climbing gym for the first time this weekend. She was hesitant, I'd imagine it's intimidating. After watching me embarrass myself a few times she was ready to go. Kind of amazing watching her attack that wall, and watching her confidence grow as she went along. Side note, my entire body is still sore... JJFIVEOH
Did 12 miles today with the boy. It was a nice 92 degrees out. There was so much pollen in the air, it looked like it was snowing. you can almost make it out in this picture. And Mexico's gonna pay for it! What kind of bike did you end up getting? I saw that. Sabel79
Getting her hooked early? I suppose we shall see. For now we're just exposing her to as much as we can before school starts for real in the fall and time becomes more and more scarce. if she shows any great interest in one sport / activity as opposed to another, then we'll take it more seriously. Of course, my wife and I both have our barely concealed preferences / agendas... But we agree it's important to find her something she'll want to go all in on. And that she goes outside and or engages in healthy physical activity.

Doohicksie
CRUSHED IT. My goal for National Bicycle Month was to ride every day. I did that. Going into this weekend I realized if I had a good weekend I might even hit 800 miles for the month. My previous best month was 562. Today it rained HARD all afternoon. The radar showed a brief lull before another wave, so I started watching closely for my chance. And then a miracle happened: The next wave of showers literally evaporated into thin air. The patch of rain that was heading my way just vanished. So I made a mental outline of my ride, taking care to avoid the river and low lying areas due to flash flood warnings. When I left the house it was still drizzling but eventually that petered out and I was able ride my planned route. About a quarter of the way through I almost headed home; the wind kicked up to over 20 mph with gusts to 30, in crosswinds that nearly knocked me over- I had trouble maintaining a straight line. I pressed on though and the wind calmed to a mere 12 mph. And so.... I ended up riding 35 miles, for a total of 802 miles for the month. JJFIVEOH
Congrats!! Now it's time to get fat again and enjoy the tasty stuff. GT Aggressor Comp Cool, so you went with the hardtail. That's the same route I took. Full suspension bikes have really changed in the last 5-10 years and the prices have followed suit. Wasn't going to cough up that kind of cash at least until I move somewhere where I can appreciate it. Very few trails down here and ZERO hills makes for limited mountain biking. I still have my old full suspension bike that's really outdated, but still really fun to ride every once in a while. I suppose we shall see. For now we're just exposing her to as much as we can before school starts for real in the fall and time becomes more and more scarce. if she shows any great interest in one sport / activity as opposed to another, then we'll take it more seriously. jsb
What is that thing 2 inches below your lips???? Is that "A" chin as opposed to "multiple" chins??? :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: Nice job hitting 40lbs. That is a milestone!!!!!!!!!! And so.... I ended up riding 35 miles, for a total of 802 miles for the month. So you only hit 801.9 and not 802???? No exaggerations in this forum Robin. Seriously that is awesome and reading what you biked thru to get to that milestone, you definitely wanted it :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: For those not down in Texas, flash floods are serious business right now down here. On a personal note I hit 129 miles for the month of May and because the retention pond/lake I run around flooded, I hit 10K on Saturday and Sunday. Had to re-route in a couple of areas so I could try and keep up an approximate mileage for the day. When I got home, it said that was my longest run and on Sunday my fastest 10K time. Not knowing what the heck 10K was, I internetted it and found out it was 6.21 miles. Which coincided with it also being my fastest 1K, 5K and 1 mile times. I was pretty pumped at that. So I do know how you feel hitting the 800 mark, congratulations again.
jsb
Re-looking at your app picture, being an old guy these apps are incredible to me in how they track things. Mine tracks my history, my daily routes, times, mileage, gives me an audio update at preset times or distance. Also a breakdown on each mile run. Just awesome stuff, to me anyway and I find it is motivation to continue and try and compete not with anyone else by myself.
JJFIVEOH
I did another bike ride in Miami on Thursday. Swapped some new shoes on the bike, went with a tubeless setup. Actually a UST setup so I don't need any sealant. A little better rolling, but still a wide mountain bike tire. Far from a road tire, but not as aggressive as a full on trail bike. Went from downtown Miami all the way down to the tip of Black Creek Trail. It is the end, can't go any further. It's in the Mangrove Preserve just east of Homestead. Covered two trails on the way, Commodore and Old Cutler Trail. Pretty much straight through the heart of Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. Those two towns are a must see if you're ever in the area. One of the few nice places for a bike ride in SoFL. Also one of the very few 'manicured' areas you'll see down here. Most of the roads are covered with canopies of banyan trees, everywhere are Brazilian pepper trees, slash pines, southern magnolias............ you can pretty much travel around that area all day and not get sunburn because it's covered most of the day. Believe it or not, palm trees aren't as dominant as people think. Just that 99% of Florida is so overly manicured it just seems that way. So many animals you'd think you're in a jungle. I think the GPS tracking gets freaked out if you're surrounded by buildings, regardless of signal strength. https://ridewithgps.com/trips/9272428 Heading into Miami The trail to the end This is the end Edited June 4, 2016 by JJFIVEOH

Doohicksie
But.... the real reason I stopped by here tonight: It's been a little of a letdown now that Bike Month is over. Still riding, but back to a more "normal" amount. Wednesday I wimped out- I set out for the monthly Dinner Ride but a few miles from home I decided the clouds looked a little too threatening. I checked the radar on my phone and decided that I didn't want to get that wet so I ended up with only 6 miles. That was my last ride until today when I had a better day on the Breakfast Ride. The Breakfast Ride itself was short; I rode with the slow group so the slowest rider wouldn't ride alone, so only 12 miles to breakfast, but I did some bonus miles after breakfast and ended up with 55. Eleven
Ran into an old friend tonight. He's going at about 180 right now, which--it's not a muscular 180--is a little high for 5'10". But he used to be 260. So happy for him!

Stoner
On May 23 my dream of running a non-Ryan Miller 5K was almost dead. I stopped three times in the first half mile of my run. The next scheduled run day I took a long hike instead. Then I decided to tear everything up and forget about running three miles and focus on running 10 minutes without stopping. It was tough, but I did it. That was 12 days ago. In just four runs, I've doubled the time to 20 minutes by adding 2:30 each time. I breezed past the 10-minute mark tonight and couldn't believe less than two weeks ago I was gassed. The interesting thing about tonight is that the successful run was actually my second try. The first try, in a different location, I ran almost 10 minutes, reached a landmark that tends to be my quitting spot, and quit. I ran and walked after that, running about two miles total. I felt like the night wasn't a total wash, but I got greedy. I drove to the spot I had been running, walked 20 minutes and then started running again. It was so easy! It's as close as I've gotten to enjoying the experience. So the moral is... run before you run?! I saw a young chap doing exactly that before the 5K I was in last fall, and I thought he was slightly loco. Running is a fascinating mental exercise. I really think it's your brain that's being challenged more than your body. The wanting to stop, the wanting to sit down... I legitimately enjoy running, but sometimes in the midst of a run my brain is just telling me to do about 5 million other things...if I get past that, I feel like I can run forever. Don't always get past it though. Anyway, good on you for pushing through a tough stretch with the whole enterprise.
Stoner
My friend, I think you've had a breakthrough. Possibly. I've also embraced the suffering (ahem). I used to have this silly notion that running would be as relaxing as a nice walk, then I was shocked that a few minutes in I was breathing hard and feeling it in my legs. Now I expect the pain. That's been pretty huge.
