While this forum sure likes sitting on their computers or phones wasting time talking about food, beer, liquor and sometimes even sports, I can't imagine we're all maintaining a sedentary lifestyle.

So let's have a thread about it. We can discuss what we do for exercise, our fitness goals, accomplishments, failures, questions, etc.

As for myself I'm an active cyclist, beer league hockey player, and I run when the tendonitis in my knee isn't acting up. Thanks to my job and all of the running I've been doing I'm down to 208lbs this summer, which feels pretty good. I managed to set a new average pace record on my bike yesterday before the crankset blew up, and I'm almost down to a 9 minute mile for running. A far cry from my highschool days, but that was a long time ago.

My goal for the rest of the summer is to get my 3 mile time under 25 minutes and upgrade the gearing on my old roadbike to allow me to ride a faster average speed, since I'm maxing out my old 53/14 gearing with my normal cadence.

What do you guys and gals like to do?

Beer league hockey, one scheduled game every Sunday and then I usually sub for one of the later games. 55 minutes of ice time is great cardio. Plus the league is pretty competitive.

Softball double headers every Sunday before hockey. And I walk the dog about two miles a day.

I have a pretty good metabolism still and I stay pretty trim without doing much, but I'll lift for a while when I feel I'm getting doughy.

now that's an OT post. :)

biking. have a street-worthy mountain bike, but the tires are too knobby. i find myself working more against the bike than i should. 10-12 mile rides are all i can manage on this thing. in its place, i got a street bike with street tires. the difference is insane. 20 milers? no problem.

utah has gone to great lengths to spruce up their urban bike trails. at this point, i could travel from south ogden to south provo. for all of you who aren't up on your utah geography (read: the entirety of the rest of this group ...), that would be like biking from buffalo to a bit past rochester using nothing but biking trails.

i haven't tried it yet cuz i know i'm not in anywhere near that kind of shape, but by the end of next summer, yah. totally gonna do it.

I've been on a health kick. I've never lifted anything except a pen but in May I started doing weight work with a detergent bottle filled with water, of all things. OSP taught me that one. It weighs about 12 pounds and is free. I just graduated to a 25-pound dumbbell. I'm able to curl it 12 times with the right arm and maybe 10 with the left. I figure that's about the right weight for now. My biceps are up to about 13.5 inches. Nothing to brag about, but big for me. Pushups, too. With all that, plus losing about 15 pounds in two months, the man boobs are almost gone!

For cardio, I do two 3.5 miles walks almost every day, but that only gets my pulse up to about 120. I wanted something more intense, so I started jogging here and there. I hate it. The pounding hurts my joints and my shins immediately cramp. I tried a home exercise where I take the steps three at a time, alternating right and left leg. Do 15 trips and your quads are on fire and it's good cardio. I've mostly replaced that with a 30 minute-hike three times a week (replacing one of the walks), about 20 minutes of which is up a steep hillside. I scared myself recently when I almost sprinted up part of it, then had to stop. My pulse was well over 200, not counting the skips! I need to back that off.

My weakness is food. I've done really well most weeks, almost fanatically sticking to the Dean Ornish Group 1 plan (basically a strict vegan diet). But last Saturday well into this week I fell off the wagon with pizza and hot fudge sundaes and subs. I've recovered in recent days, but today's Saturday again!

Great idea for a thread, d4rk. Good luck and good health.

This is gonna sound silly, but I started surfing (when in Rome?) just last summer and was not prepared for the workout involved. Maybe it's because I still suck at it, but it's WAY more swimming than it is anything else.

Also, my nipples hate me (too cool for a rash guard).

Nice my bro (who posters may or may not know works same job) is down almost 20 lbs as well. In my hey day, I was a svelt 165 lbs working the same job as you guys. Well, 10 years later and 50 lbs heavier, my fat ass has seen better days. I'd love to sit here and tell everyone my exhaustive work out routine but the most I get is about 1-2 30 minute elliptical work outs a week. I'd like to do more but with the hours I work (anywhere from 50-60 hours a week) and being the primary meal prepared in the house, it's 9 pm before I wrap my days up. Just not motivated to add to the schedule.

Good topic. I just posted my nutritional conviction in "What are you eating ...". I started at the beginning of June.

I bought a treadmill and do 40 minutes at 3.0 / 3.5 mph every day. Two ACLs on my left knee, no meniscus, and a high ankle sprain have me cautious. Twenty five pound dumbell, 2x10 reps. Fifty pound handgrips, 4x10 reps. Lots of stretching. So far, so good. Pulse at 135 when walking. SWEAT and feel great. Down 19 pounds, eating like a madman, sleeping less ... and singing. All I need is a Stanley Cup parade.

My football, hockey and lacrosse days are over. Small victories!

I go on streaks of exercise for a month or two, then slack off. I'm just a big boy, so I hate running because of the pounding, but I like PA's balance between walking and free weights, then spicing the walking up with some extra stuff. I think people all too often want to lose weight as goal #1, so they do heavy cardio. I've found the best thing to do in my opinion is to take advantage of your extra bulk and start weight work first and concentrate on that. Instead of a 3 mile walk, maybe do a 30 minute walk and then 20 minutes of weights for the first few months. At least in my case, I bulk up and tone much faster, then can move to more cardio over time with the increased muscle support. I'm built like a left tackle though, so I am not sure that will work for everyone. I use dumbbells as you are constantly moving weight, picking them up and putting them down, moving into position, and it forces you to use all your stabilizers. I don't even have a weight bench but will use the bed for bench and flys. Once you get technique down and build your stabilizers, you can add weight. And don't expect to push the same with dumbbells as a bar and bench....maybe only 70-80%. These also make it easy to push to your limit because if you start failing, just dump the weight to your side. I'm far from a pro at it, but this works best for me. Then as you increase your big things like bench and shrugs, your original weights can be used for some of the lighter stuff like shoulders and curls. It's impossible to max out, but if you just want health and tone, nothing stopping you from doing 3 sets of 30 at 150 instead of 10 at 225, or whatever level works for you. Get creative. On that note, I'm headed to the casino to drink some beer......

I hit the gym at my college here and there, but I mostly just do free-weights at my house and run the loop around the hills where I live; it's 2 miles on the dot so it works out pretty well.

I'd kill to get into beer-league hockey in the summer, but unfortunately it's only available in the winter for me :(

I'm looking for a hard-pitch baseball summer league around town, but I thin I already missed the sign-ups; kinda sucks cause I haven't played ball since high school and I definitely miss it whenever I toss the ball around with my bro.

Just went shooting today, that was a blast.... :w00t: Haha puns aside, it was a great time. Got some clay pigeons and some cinder blocks out with some buddies and tried about around 8 different guns, including a 1942 mosin nagant from Russia; that baby was something else

Alright beer league hockey players, be honest now. Who drinks while on the bench?

That's the best time to drink

I hate playing loaded. I feel about twenty pounds heavier.

I can't play loaded. But I'll have one when I'm getting dressed and one comes to the bench with me for the beer time out that we'll be taking if we're losing big in the third. Then one for after the game getting undressed and one for the shower...then I get driven home lol

Shoot, at that point I've already sweat it all out!

Played in a fast pitch wooden bat league last summer, it was great! My schedule wouldn't allow for it this year. Hopefully next year...

Ah you got into the wooden bat leagues?! Those are great. I had to work all summer one year and my buddy made sure to boast about it every game. I would've killed to use one back when we trained in the winter, hate aluminum bats when it's cold out; especially if you leave your batting gloves in your car :wallbash:

I will never understand people who pay for a gym membership, and then pay someone to mow their lawn and plow their driveway.

Now that it's Summer, I will try to ride the bike to work as much as I can. 7 miles each way. I will shoot for 3 times a week, but it will probably be more like 1 to 2. Beer league hockey once a week, Although last week was the playoffs and we played Sun, Tues, and Thurs (in case anyone was wondering, winning is way better than losing).

Two time champs

The rest of my exercise comes in the form of housework, yard work and chasing a high energy, rabid monkey around the house.

I don't drink on the bench, but I never play better than after one martini and two beers (one beer if it's the playoffs). It's just enough to angry up the blood just right but not lose any facility.

Well, being that I'm a 30 year old custodian at a high school that cleans up after 900 kids with football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and so many other wonderful things that go on at a high school. I would think I'm in pretty good shape. During the summer months I strip and wax floors and manage 27 acres around the school which needs mowing, weed eating, watering and so on. There are 5 of us doing the job but still we all walk miles a day. For fun I like to mountain bike, walks in the park with the family, and go places and see new things. I'm going out to Crater Lake tomorrow for some world class mountain biking. The lake is about 20 minutes from my house and if anybody comes too or around southern Oregon it is a must see!

Was in a beer league for hockey for a while but that ended up costing too much in the long run. Same with a golf league I was in. Prices are pretty much crazy now. I didn't mind the cost of the hockey league but the place we played was shady as all hell for our schedule. We always had 16 games scheduled but only ended up playing about 11 of them because they decided to cancel whenever someone wanted to rent it.

Nowadays most of my exercise is cardio from walking around my building. I know it doesn't sound like much but I usually go up and down 3 floors about 50-60 times a day not including walking around the building itself. I do intend on starting swimming in the mornings before work every couple of days soon but I'm still ironing out the details on that one.

Play a lot of tennis and usually racquetball once a week at least. I weighed 205 when I was in the Navy down to 180 now but look smaller than my weight. Many people hate me for saying this, but I try to put weight on just to fill out a bit. I take in a lot of calories via weight gainer, etc... But I do so much cardio with the tennis I'll never get it back on... There is no way I'm getting back in shape the was I was when I was in the service... Also font have the free time I'd like.

Unfortunately, the rec sports portion of my life is all but over with my most of my teams dispersing around the country. That said, I've been active in the gym since I was a freshman in high school. Nowadays I exercise 5-6 days per week. I run 2-3 miles on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday; free weights Monday-Friday and walk 2 miles on the days I don't run. Saturdays are my total recovery day where I do nothing and eat whatever I want. Works out pretty well, and it's so ingrained in my daily routine I actually get really mad when I can't make the gym.

I envy this mentality, I do it well for a few months then as soon as I make progress, boom I stop. I think its because I find lifting weights to be stressfu/added stress, and not a stress relief like a sport, but good for you for keeping a tight schedule.

This thread is about as dedicated Sabres hockey as the who cares what you eating or drinking one. But hey its summer.
