spndnchz Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 LA is a bad example. They traded Schenn (#5 overall) and Johnson (#3 overall) in packages to acquire Richards and Carter, thus completing their Cup team. I think Boston and Detroit are the only post-lockout Cup winners where top-5 picks weren't either the foundation of the team or used in deals to acquire key pieces for the team. And with Detroit, seriously, if the Sabres fall ass backwards into 2-3 hall of fame players in the mid rounds I'll stop clamoring for high picks ;) Build the base and know when to go for it. Darcy missed his chance in 06-07. Well, we all did.
Jsixspd Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 I don't think Chicago lacks for toughness... plus they've got great puck handling skills. They're constantly trying to move down ice when they have the puck - at least when they're not on the Power Play - at which time they look like the Sabres. LOL
Hoss Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Every champion since the lockout, excluding the Detroit Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks, has had at least one top five pick as a significant contributor on their cup winning team that THEY selected themselves... 2013: Chicago- Kane (1st), Toews (3rd) 2012: Los Angeles- Drew Doughty (2nd) (also used fifth overall pick Brayden Schenn to acquire other significant contributors) 2011: Boston- Tyler Seguin (2nd) (also used fifth overall pick Phil Kessel to acquire other significant contributors) 2010: Chicago- Kane (1st), Toews (3rd) 2009: Pittsburgh- Jordan Staal (2nd), Sidney Crosby (1st), Evgeni Malkin (2nd), Marc-Andre Fleury (1st) (also used fifth overall pick Ryan Whitney to acquire a significant contributor) 2008: Detroit- NONE 2007: Anaheim- NONE (picked Bobby Ryan fifth overall before they won the cup, but he didn't play until the year after) 2006: Carolina- Eric Staal (2nd), Andrew Ladd (4th) (also used third overall pick Jack Johnson to acquire other significant contributors) Seems pretty ironic that three teams used a former fifth overall pick to acquire significant contributors to their cup winning team... We took Thomas Vanek fifth overall.

Andrew Amerk Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Yea, I know. But Kessel also brought in other significant contributors so I just listed it that way. 1/4 of the last 8 winners did it without a top pick... Lloyd: What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together? Mary: Well, Lloyd, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really... Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances? Mary: Not good. Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred? Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million. Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance...
spndnchz Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Rasmus likes Teppo as mentor, loose translation "It would be really great if Numminen should be a mentor. Much better doctrine would not be able to get. Numminen is a huge career behind him, and he certainly has a lot to offer for everyone and especially for me. We will probably be here in Finland now, as quickly as possible, and then the output would be Buffalo's junior camp. From here you have to get to training camp and the team then. My goal is to play in the next season in the NHL, and I believe in it."

HopefulFuture Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Were F'd bigtime. But no matter. When one of these 2 picks in the 1st completely fall off the radar in 3 years or so and the other is relegated to 4 to 6 D man duty, we'll just have to pray that Regier is finally fired. Unfortunately, the most likely scenario is that Regier gets an extension to yet again try and get it right :( :o

Risto will likely come in this season. He will have some struggles but 3years from today, we will be talking about our solid finnish blueliner. Zadorov will spend this season in the OHL because he should. He should log 18-20mins a night and really work on rounding his game out. 3 years from now he will just be starting to hit his stride. Zadorov has so much raw potential it is scary. Risto is very complete and ready to go. 3-4 years from now they will be in our top 4 defenders.

If you mean first overall, two did it without a first overall pick. But none did it without a top five pick. None of them even did it without a top two pick.

DaveSnuggerud Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Conservative move by Darcy, yes. He is big and physical, the fans will find him smashing faces into the glass very exciting. His puck moving abilities are more important though. We have had a terrible transition game recently. Remember how the offense used to fly when soupy was flinging pucks to our forwards?
Hoss Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Go back and look at your own chart. Therein lies your own answer to what I said. Ah, for some reason I read it as one out of the last four. Reading comprehension failure. Wonder if those numbers would go up or down if I went further back beyond the lockout.
Andrew Amerk Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Ah, for some reason I read it as one out of the last four. Reading comprehension failure. Wonder if those numbers would go up or down if I went further back beyond the lockout. Would be interesting to see. Might not prove much though...different teams have taken different paths to the Cup. The Sabres took Perreault at 1, then Martin and Schony at 5's, and didn't win.
Andrew Amerk Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 As a side note, calling Rasmus "Risto" keeps bringing back memories of Andy Ristau. Anyone who doesn't remember or know what ended up happening to Ristau with the Amerks against Hershey at the Aud, needs to google it.
shrader Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 So does he not have to deal with the mandatory military service that Armia had?
TrueBlueGED Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 So does he not have to deal with the mandatory military service that Armia had? Mandatory military service for athletes there is a joke. They can complete it in like 3 months or less over the summer. IMO the reason they made a big deal out of it for Armia is they didn't think he was ready for the NHL, and the FEL was a better place for him to work on his game than Rochester. If they think Risto is ready, the military service won't keep him over there.

SabresBillsFan Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 People make it sound like they are not happy with Ristolainen as the 8th pick. Well if the scouting staff all had targeted him and Zadorov and got both then they did what they set out to do. Plus you look at the Sekera trade to get Compher it sounds like they had their eyes set on him as well. Yes we know Nichushkin could possibly be a homerun but he could be a complete bust as well. To much talk about KHL surrounding him.

Taro T Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Really looking forward to this. I wish Nichushkin was a Hurricane so I could hate him more. What, him being a skilled, apparently soft of character, rookie on LR's team isn't enough working against him?
