Weave Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Learned about this pick while climbing into a tax at BUF; disappointed that both Monahan and Nurse were unavailable. For me Risto is a sort of consolation prize for Nurse going early along with all those top forwards. I'm at peace with it. Depending on whose draft board you paid attention to we got either the 2nd or 3rd best defender in the draft. Not too shabby for the #8 pick.
Stoner Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Yes he rarely adds anything of substance aside from snide remarks about how he can do someone's job better. Classic whiner Well, I could do Terry's job better. Wouldn't be hard. I think the image is fair game. A lawyer/TV exec jostling with a fracker for the coveted spot next to the first pick. Amateur hour.
Lorenzo Von Matterhorn Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Please no Fucale, wanted Pulock
IKnowPhysics Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Interview up on Sabres.com. Seems like he's the angry Pronger-type. Could lay down the grit. Hopefully Teppo can work with him on his English.
26CornerBlitz Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 @BillHoppeNHL Quick story #Sabres first pick Rasmus Ristolainen believes he can play in NHL right away http://tinyurl.com/l527vxe #Buffalo
LaFontaineToMogilny Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 I remember someone said that the criticism against Risto was that he doesn't read the game well or something like that, that had me a little concerned about the jump to smaller ice in NA. Kris Baker said that every time he has seen him play in North America the game becomes easier for him, so that makes me feel a lot better. I am pretty confident that Rasmus will be a great player for us for many years. Added bonus for me: Rasmus means 'asspussy' in Norwegian.

That Aud Smell Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Guy played a few years with Armia. Could have been a factor. no diggity.
Bullwinkle III Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Maybe the reason they picked 2 D is that they expect Myers to bomb - or they plan to trade him. I'm trying as best I can to rationalize these choices. They make no sense to me.

I'm trying as best I can to rationalize these choices. They make no sense to me. Or they simply went with the top guys on their board, because it's the NHL draft and the vast majority of the time you don't expect instant impact, so drafting for current needs is silly.
26CornerBlitz Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 8 Rasmus Ristolainen D TEAM: TPS Turku - FINLAND BORN: Turku, FINLAND AGE: 18HT: 6-4WT: 207 ALLAN MUIR'S TAKE: The Sabres passed on some interesting, albeit flawed, offensive options and went with big-boned Ristolainen to help shore up a defense that sagged badly last year. He spent the past two seasons playing against men in Finland's SM-Liiga, so he'll get a chance to step right into the lineup next season. He plays a skilled, two-way game and can chew up the minutes--he averaged more than 25 minutes with Turku as an 18-year-old. "The first thing you notice about him is his poise," a scout told me last week. "He has a lot of faith in his ability to assess the play. He's mature beyond his years."

SarasotaSabre Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 The broadcast is funny. After each of the first 7 picks, they had a ton of tweets at the bottom of the screen for each about how awesome they all were. They didn't really have any for us. Maybe they couldn't find any. EDIT: And now, while waiting for pick #9, they're back to tweets about how great Edmonton and Calgary's picks were. do you think it's probably because it is a TSN broadcast albeit on the NBC Sports Network ??
Robviously Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 do you think it's probably because it is a TSN broadcast albeit on the NBC Sports Network ?? Not really. The first five picks were all American teams and they had tons of "hooray for us!" tweets for all of them.

Instant impact is just what Nichushkin is expected to bring! You do realize that he's been slated into the top 6 by most scouts, don't you? Horvat too will bring immediate impact. I expect both players to be in their starting lineup next season. Drafting for current needs makes perfect sense when those needs can be immediately met.
Stoner Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 ALLAN MUIR'S TAKE: The Sabres passed on some interesting, albeit flawed, offensive options and went with big-boned Ristolainen to help shore up… Oh, that's close to being my new SabreSpace handle.

If you want to argue for Nichushkin (I wanted him too, and am totally bummed about not getting him), NHL-readiness isn't the route you want to take.
Andrew Amerk Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 I would've preferred Nichushkin at 8. Or Nurse if they really wanted a top D, had they swung 8 for 5.
26CornerBlitz Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 @coreypronman BUF selects Ristolainen. He played tough minutes after the lock out in the FEL. He's a very well rounded defenseman. @coreypronman Ristolainen is mobile, can move the puck, check good players, has size and is physical. He has no significant flaw in his game.
