qwksndmonster Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Let's see him do something on the positive side, and then I might develop a favorable opinion. I'm neutral/slightly negative because the lines he's been on have been scored against, with no positive contribution as yet. Again, all benefits to his addition remain purely speculative at this point. That's the thing about playing defense in hockey. It's really hard. Nobody really notices you until you eff it up. Risto made some really nice reads tonight, and just for you he had a big hit.
IKnowPhysics Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 I thought Risto had a good, quiet game, the type of reliable, gaff-free game that's important in his continued development. He also threw his weight around as a little icing on that cake. If games like this are this kid's game #4, I look forward to his games in the numbers in both the 70ish and 400ish range. He's beginning to demonstrate what Kevin Devine means by "NHL ready."

LGR4GM Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 He's not -4... like Myers and Weber. :) He also isn't playing the minutes or against the competition of Myers and Weber. Risto actually is looking better with each game I have seen. Last night he showed some more physicality which was good. I think he needs to improve every game this season and by the end show us he was indeed NHL ready. If anyone will notice too, Risto was holding the puck more last night and making better passes. He skates very well and I will watch him closely going forward. As for GoDD on McCabe. I believe the only reason Jake McCabe is not on this team is because of his commitment to college. Next year he could make the jump or he could take all 4 years at college but it has nothing to do with his talent level. McCabe is smart, solid, and very good defensively. He just chose a different path and so we have to wait.
chileanseabass Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Here's something I'm impressed with... through 4 games Risto has 0 PIMs. Why is that impressive? It means he can hang with the speed of the NHL and keeps his feet moving. No needless hooking or tripping calls, because someone got past him. No holding calls because he got outworked down low or in the corner. Last night he threw his weight around, didn't shy away from being physical, and looked steady back there. Has he been perfect? No. There will be bumps in the road, he'll read a few plays wrong, etc., but he belongs in the NHL and doesn't look out of place.
IKnowPhysics Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 ^ Notable point. He's not lazy by any means, and seems to avoid the stupid/lazy penalties.
That Aud Smell Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Four games in and it appears that Risto is going to be among a few (few) bright spots in a season where the team may well finish DFL (despite getting really, really good goaltending).
LTS Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Another good point. He also doesn't lead the team like Mr. Myers does with 8 PIM. Not Kaleta, not Ott... Myers.
26CornerBlitz Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 @SabresPR #Sabres GM Dary Regier announces the team has recalled defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen from the Rochester Americans (AHL).
IKnowPhysics Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 Yeah, I have a feeling we'll see a lot of what Vogl called paper moves. He had noted Risto was reassigned after practice, but watched the game that night with no indication that he was physically headed to Rochester.

26CornerBlitz Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 So if we're recalling him... A move is coming....wonder what it will be???
skaught Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 A move is coming....wonder what it will be??? Probably someone to IR
IKnowPhysics Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 Rotating door to the Amerks, but only on paper?
Hoss Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 Probably someone to IR Maybe Ehrhoff? Wasn't at practice today.

Jsixspd Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 He's not -4... like Myers and Weber. :) LOL - I'd actually rather see them send one of those two guys down than Ristolainen - he does seem to have more on the ball than they do.
Onceagain Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 Does anyone understand the point of calling up Risto to have him sit and watch? WTF is going on w this team.
26CornerBlitz Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 After watching this, http://video.sabres.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hcatid=1394&id=263379&lang=en , can someone tell me I'm wrong in thinking Devine and his team liked Risto over Seth Jones?
dudacek Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 I wondered that too. But I have concluded the Sabres had simply had targeted Risto for pick eight. They believed there was no chance Jones would be there at but there when it was their turn, but there was a reasonable chance Risto would be, so they focused on him.

When Jones was about to be picked, Devine was worried about the Preds Finnish guy being up on stage and after the Jones pick was announced he says "Thank God". That leads me to conclude they liked Risto more.

That leads me to conclude they liked Risto more. Not necessarily. I think what dudacek is tyring to say is if Nashville took Risto with that pick there was still a good chance that Jones doesn't fall to us(Edmonton would grab him for sure I suspect) and then the Sabres don't end up with Jones or Risto.

Certainly could have been the case. Which means the Sabres would have landed either Jones, Lindholm, Monahan, or Nurse. Nothing to have a cow over like Devine was.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 How far off is your evaluation if you are worried a guy is going to be taken at #4?? Oh shucks...so Ristolainen goes #4. That leaves God forbid, Jones, Nurse, Lindholm and Monahan on the board for you. It also makes your pick more valuable when someone reaches, and a trade becomes more enticing for another team. Vancouver traded a goalie to get to #9 for Bo Horvat with Nichushkin still there. Imagine what would have happened at 8 if a surprise happens and someone reached on Ristolainen? Who in their right mind would be disappointed with that? Your pick becomes a goldmine.

Nothing to have a cow over like Devine was. Ya I'm not sure the over-reaction was warranted but I'd still rather Risto over Nurse. However, I sure wouldn't have had the same reaction as Devine had Risto went 4th. How far off is your evaluation if you are worried a guy is going to be taken at #4?? I really wouldn't conisder having Nurse over Risto 'a goldmine pick'.
