Look, one thing you can count on...Darcy will get good value for Vanek if he goes to NJ. Regardless of what you think about Darcy, he is excellent at trading.

I would think that a first rounder in 2015 has to be there. Plus Henrique. We might throw in two 2nd round picks to sweeten the pot and Stafford (if that really helps). If so, we'll have 2 first rounders in 2015, which may double our chances for McDavid.

If Darcy does that, I'm happy.

Am I the only one who thinks NJ is a terrible trade partner for Vanek? With where their roster is at, I think they'll be more inclined to rebuild then to trade young assets for a win now player.

I agree. I think with the Kovalchuk departure, the lack of 1st round pick, and the Parise departure last year... plus couple that with Brodeur on the brink of retirement... NJD are in retool mode and have no need for Miller or Vanek. They also have issues because not having a 1st in 2014 hurts them a lot and I wonder if they will try and trade someone for a 1st at the deadline. I think they will be competitive but can not really challenge for anything. I would look for them to be sellers at the deadline, Elias, Zajac, Clowe, Ryder, Zubrus as your top 5 is pretty rough.

agreed... perfect time to tank and take all that money into 2015 and then reload.. from the huge ufa list in 2015

New Jersey is poised to jump on the GoDD rebuild train.

Except they have no money.

The fact they knew Kovy was going really changes my view of the Tallinder trade.

I've been arguing that exact thought process since people started talking about Vanek to them. He wouldn't want to be there, they wouldn't want to/don't have the assets to give to get him.

Darcy, in a bold move, trades Vanek to NJ for the rights to Kovalchuk and a pair of 7th round picks. "This is part of the suffering while we rebuild" a gloomy Regier uttered through clench teeth to the local media. Miller, hearing the news, spontaneously combusts. (slow news day flight of fancy)

Yeah, this just proves how desperate they want to jump start rumors. NJ and Buffalo could possibly be the worst trading partners in the league when it comes to a deal like this. Buffalo would want prospects (most likely on the wing), and NJ is super thin there. And they don't have a 1st rounder next year. Just beyond silly......

I'd take their 1st in 2015...

I cannot see NJ going 3 years without a 1st round pick.

I'd love to think that a market just opened for Thomas but NJ is about as bad a trading partner as could be. they just don't have any depth in young forward talent or picks to trade.

I agree, I am just saying if I could target a team in 2015 who's draft pick I wanted it would be NJD.

What happens if Enroth outperforms Miller in camp and preseason and he is named #1? It is a possibility. What happens then? Just a thought.

Jhonas Enroth starts more games?

Honestly IF and that is a very big IF that happened I would guess Ryan Miller will work extremely hard to regain his starting spot. Considering this an Olympics year... I highly doubt anyone could outplay Miller going into camp. He will be on his A+ game.

What happens? I don't know

What happens if at the start of next seasons Zombies rise from their graves and refuse to let theNHL continue to play games?

What happens if your car gets struck by a flying pig on the way home from work tonight?

All things that we should be concerned with along with Jhonas Enroth outperforming anyone in camp to win the starting job............

You are right. I forgot to include what happens to Millers trade value? (damn phone calls in the middle of typing)

@BillHoppeNHL

Darcy Regier said w/each passing day it becomes more likely Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek will still be on the #Sabres to start the season.

Boy, he said alot there. :P

And as usual you add nothing but sarcasm to the conversation.

And then beyond the deadline. And then, come July 1, 2014 we'll all be shot into a time machine back to 2007... DARCY REGIER EVERYBODY. :worthy:

And no one should be surprised if this is exactly how it plays out.

Yea, that's how I voted it would play out when this thread opened. And I stand by it. In the end, maybe one gets dealt at the deadline for a decent but not impressive deal, but otherwise I don't see it going anywhere.

If they're both on the roster, I'm willing to bet that this team is in the playoff hunt (well within maybe 6-7 points of it) at the deadline which causes Darcy to stay the course and hold out hope for a playoff chase that will end up in failure.

Why would it?

You're most likely correct, but letting valuable assets exit w/o any return should be the final straw. But of course the question will again be "What's he done wrong?"
