  1. 1. Will Vanek be traded? When?

    • He won't be traded, he will be resigned by the Sabres.
    • He'll be traded before the first round of the 2013 draft ends.
    • He'll be traded after the first round of the 2013 draft ends but before the beginning of the 2013-14 regular season.
    • He'll be traded after the beginning of the 2013-14 season but before the 2014 trade deadline.
    • His rights will be traded after the 2014 trade deadline OR he won't be traded at all before he turns UFA.

Completely disagree. His value to the league has nothing to do with his value to the Sabres. A team looking to acquire him will pay based on what they think he can do for their team, not what he does for the Sabres.

And you have faith in Regier to handle it in such a manner?

We're saying the same thing. Vanek's value varies. While other teams may think Darcy is asking too much, he might in fact be asking fair value in terms of what Thomas means to Buffalo. The only way a trade gets made is if Darcy finds a partner that feels Thomas has the equivalent value to their team.

they could do a sign and trade to max return for...miller and vanek...two three way deals..the sabres, the players agent, and the new team.

Miller...6-7.5 for five is my guess and ...vanek 7.5 - 8 for eight + here and max term else where

IMO...no doubt in my mind that if either goes to a top ten team they will out perform their best numbers as Sabres. Miller on a team with a d will be very dangerous. Vanek on a team with a pp , two scoring lines and a 1 center will blow his Sabres numbers away.

Sign and trades aren't allowed in the NHL.

I just think that both players have already moved on from the idea of resigning. 2007 has me too worried to mess around with the deadline. Move them now and get it over with. Land a few near-NHL ready forwards and a pick or two.

you cannot sign a player, have conversations while doing it and trade him? semantics . happens every day

It's an easy equation, he's one of the top wingers in the game and just had a monster season. If you remove him, it damages the franchise. The return needs to be a piece or collective pieces that replace that equally, and are consistent with the new direction of the team.

And if you're an anemic, weak-assed team, you'll need to come up with more than your scrawny arm and your peg leg, which is especially bad for you, because that UFA is likely not to sign a new contract with your anemic, weak-assed team.

And if he flat-out tells Regier he will not re-sign here? Changes the equation enormously.

I am warming up to Vanek staying even if it is just until the deadline. Miller on the other hand needs to go ASAP. His trade value during the season and at the deadline will be underwhelming unless a team in contention loses their goaltender for the season and does not have an adequate backup. Since no one knows what his approved list looks like(teams he won't go to), it is hard to predict what the market is for him.

He needs to go NOW!

It doesn't change the equation much, just the urgency and certainty with which you would need to move him. Maybe that means you decrease the selling price a little to guarantee a return, but for a player of Vanek's ability, I would expect that it's a seller's market.

Or... at least before the season starts...

Maybe Edmonton makes us a suitable offer, but i think the candidates will try it with Thomas first( because it does not cost anything than money). But then there is no realy good goalie on the market. Emery is a backup for me.

I would be worried about his performance behind the Buffalo d. That Chicago d was excellent and that was not the strongest Division to play in. I would rather take a chance on Thomas

Miller to the Isles, maybe? Who would you want back? I'd want Michel Grabner so that he could play on an "Austrian death machine" line with Vanek.

The only player I think I'd really want is the one they should never part with. So: picks. All of their picks.

It will soon get to the point where "the longer they're in Buffalo, the lower their value goes." At this point in time, they won't be considered "rentals" if they're dealt to good situations. As it gets closer to the season/deadline, they will become "rentals." A lot of players/teams don't negotiate in season and thus would consider them rentals at that point.

Generally, I agree with that. I think if a player can make it to a team before training camp starts, I don't think there's a rental attitude abound about the trade value. There's plenty of time between the start of free agency and that time to get contract extensions done or trades completed. It's mutually beneficial to us, so we can get any roster players or prospects coming our way into our camp too.

Yea, I just feel like the moves should be made sooner rather than later. Thought they actually should've been active in trying to move one of them at the last deadline (which it actually sounds like they were). But let's get these new guys into our camp and get them acclimated. Allow Miller/Vanek to do the same. I'd love to keep them long term, but I'm completely convinced that neither will even consider it.

Frans Nielsen. Would give us a defensively responsible center to buy time while one of our young centers hopefully learns where the defensive zone is on the ice.

The Stars deal for Seguin makes them an even better partner for a Vanek deal. Jim Nill is going for it. He needs some scoring on the wing, though. They have zero goal scorers on the wing after losing Eriksson.

Erik Cole and Ray Whitney are the only contributors from the wing... and they're both ancient.

Some are saying this trade moves Jamie Benn back to the wing... but that gives them one real threat.

Plus, I think they're coach has connections to Vanek. Can't #CONFIRM that, though.

Vanek would just love to be reunited with Lindy!!

Exactly! As soon a Ruff was hired in Dallas, Vanek probably went to Darcy and changed his NTC to include Dallas. I don't think Vanek liked Lindy at all.

My thoughts as well.

Good thing Vanek doesn't have a NTC or NMC in his contract then! DR can send him anywhere he wants. Either way this is a moot point. He will be on our roster next season with 1 year remaining. At the deadline we will trade him for a frist (20-30 range) and that will be that.

My comment was more about Vaneks dislike for Ruff which is only my opinion. Nothing to back it up.
