Robviously Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 Anyone catch the start of the Flames-Canucks game? 5 on 5 brawl at puck drop. Love it -- it was Slap Shot come to life. Quote
Robviously Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) 1st Intermission in Vancouver starts and there's footage of John Tortorella trying to storm the Calgary dressing room with a cameo from Clint Malarchuk (Flames' Goalie Coach) helping push him back (along with a bunch of Flames players). JJFIVEOH Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 Red Wings scored a PPG with :30 left when the puck went out of play, bounced off the netting and fell down off the back of Quick. The puck was clearly out of play and they deemed it an unreviewable goal. What nonsense! Should have been a Kings win 2-1 but the Wings won 3-2 in a SO. Quote
Assquatch Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Oh boy what a mess this Flames/Canucks game is. (Nothing new that I know of just catching up DVR delay) Kassian opened up Bouma with a couple shots to the mush while the linesman was holding Bouma's arms then later getting a misconduct for a dead puck dustup. Torts going nuts in the hallway beginning the intermission. Edited January 19, 2014 by Assquatch Quote

darksabre Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 So you basically have to fine the Flames coach for that fight right? I mean if Dry Toast Rahn Ralstan can get fined for giving John Scott a regular shift... Quote

I mean if Dry Toast Rahn Ralstan can get fined for giving John Scott a regular shift... The fine to Rolston should have been the warning to all coaches. Hartley should be looking at a bigger fine and suspension. Westgarth is just another Scott type goon and should be removed from the game. The game of hockey should have no place for players like that, all goon and zero skill. Quote

Hartley has 21 skaters (whom he didn't hire) to select from, and 18 once the lineup is submitted, just like every other coach. He didn't assemble the team, and he has to give the fourth line guys some minutes. Quote

I hate the netting (but understand why it needs to be there)..... That's Bush league Quote
Assquatch Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Is there a clip? Kassian only got 4 minutes on the play. Haven't seen a video online yet. It wasn't during the line brawl to start the game. There's this that claims Kassian eye gouged Bouma but it's only 8 seconds long and it was just after this video that the linesman tied up Bouma and Kassian gave him a couple shots. Eleven Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 It would seem that Mr. Tortorella took a different view towards putting his OWN fourth line out to start a game in 2011 (this article is from 2012, when NJ retaliated by doing the exact same thing): A similar incident happened in a game in New Jersey this season where the Rangers started their tough guys, something DeBoer pointed out to reporters outside the visiting locker room after the game. "I guess in John’s world you can come into our building and start your tough guys, but we can’t do the same in here," DeBoer said. "He’s either got short-term memory loss or he’s a hypocrite. So it's one of the other." http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=623069 No fines for "player selection," as it should be. Quote

Just like if a play is offsides and it leads to a goal. It was a freak play and a missed call nothing more. "Most Favored Team?" Does Andrew Cuomo have you under surveillance as well? 1. I've been using "Most Favored Team" since well before Cuomo started tracking my movements. So hold the players accountable. Hartley didn't start the fight, and unless you can establish (EDIT: not surmise, not suppose, but establish) that he instructed his players to start one, it isn't on him. And what's ###### about "he has to give the fourth line some minutes"? Do you think an NHL team can play with only three lines? Edited January 19, 2014 by Eleven Quote

If your fourth line is rolling out for the opening faceoff every person in that building knows what is coming next. There's no reading between the lines on this one. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 I know this isn't how it works, but I'd have loved for Torts to put out his scoring line and have them score a goal. Knowing you're going to be down 1-0 should be a bigger deterrent to starting your 4th line than a goon on goon line brawl. Quote

Whether or not there is a place in the game for it, you just cannot fine and/or suspend a coach for player selection. How is the league going to keep enforcing this from now on to make it fair and non-judgmental, give every player a 'goon rating' and each line cannot exceed a total 'goon score'? By penalizing coaches for player selection you're getting into an ugly world of discrimination and judgment calls. Quote

After the Scott- Kessel incident there was no way another coach was going to put their stars out in that situation. And Torts said as much in his post-game presser. He was not going to risk his stars against that lineup. Does anyone know what preceded that opening faceoff? What happened previously that calgary was motivated to start their tough guys? dudacek Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Is Tortorella getting suspended for the between-periods stuff? Looks like Brian McGrattan of all people may have saved him and Malarchuk from getting into real trouble. Hartley may be the league's douchiest coach. Edited January 19, 2014 by dudacek Quote
SwampD Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Wasn't Kassian one of the shooters in the SO? Edit:he wasn't but he was in the OT and looked really good. Torts is full of chit. When he was the coach of the Rags, they had more fights in the first minute of games than any other team in the league. It's a tool he himself used often. Goons fought goons,… and for those that cry about wanting that out of the game, did you watch the rest of that game? It was awesome. That energy would not have been there without that dust-up at the beginning. Edited January 19, 2014 by SwampD Quote
Hoss Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 @pgammo: Calgary and Vancouver last night reiterated why the NHL is a minor sport Okay Petey. You cover baseball. Let's cover some bullet points: -Most of the good players in baseball are on PEDs. -Hockey players aren't. -Your sport isn't an Olympic sport. -Hockey is. -Your sport has bench-clearing brawls once a week. -Hockey has line brawls a couple times a season.
