Some kindling for this thread

Would it be bad if I pointed out the typo Vogl used twice in spelling Joe Exter's name? It's really no big deal, but it does say something about the Buffalo News.

But anyway, its amazing how close knit those NCAA and USA hockey coaching circles are. I saw watched half the guys on that list play over the past 10 or so years. It's good to see a few of these guys moving on and staying active in the hockey world (especially Exter, who damn near died on the ice).

I'm not sure if I would call that kindling. More like dry leaves or something.

I mean, he simply looked back at other coaches RR coached with. Pretty basic stuff.

Guys you know and are comfortable with and aren't threatened by vs. the best available talent.

Yeah, we get it.

1. Keep saying something at every chance.

2. Provide no back up.

3. ?????

4. It's true!

In general, when hiring, most managers put a high priority on interpersonal skills (i.e., someone they are comfortable with).

The article, though, was a simple listing of past coaching contacts RR has had. It doesn't say he's limiting his staff to anyone on that list.

I was talking about Lindy. If you're comfortable with having that kind of coaching staff again, knock yourself out. The results speak for themselves. Now take a look at the coaching staffs left in the playoffs.

But just because Lindy was "comfortable with his asst. coaches" doesn't mean that every head coach who is "comfortable with his asst. coaches" is going to have the same results. You're over-generalizing.

Mike Bavis, former Rochester American and long-time BU assistant and associate coach, has resigned from his position at BU after not being promoted to replace legendary Jack Parker. (weird sidenote: Bavis' identical twin brother Mark, a scout for the Kings, was on UA Flight 175)

Not necassarily advocating him, but he's fresh on the market.

He'll go for a head coaching job somewhere in college. But if you did want to weigh the options here, Rolston should probably be very familiar with him from his days as an assistant at BC. But no, stay far away from this one. Bavis wasn't well liked within the fanbase.

What former NHL head coach would you like to see on the staff here?

Can we at least start thinking like some of the top franchises?

Cunneyworth and Ruff.

Housley hired by the Preds. (Assistant coach) Cross him off the list.

Probably didn't fit PA's criteria of "aren't threatened by" to be hired by Rolston. I can see Housley being a head coach in 2 or 3 years.

He seems to be on a meteoric rise, eh? Out of all of the players on the Sabres roster in the 80's and 90's Housley would have been really, really low on my list of guys I thought might coach in the NHL some day.

I was always somewhat surprised by his move into coaching.

It not that I don't think Housley would be a good coach, it is more that I don't think he'd be the right coach - especially for Myers and McNabb.

Those Minnesota boys - coaching is in their blood. I still would like to see Mike Ramsey back with the Sabres.

But perhaps more of what we can expect - I see Andy Sutton just retired; maybe Rolston will hire him to do the PP. :)

I'd be happy with Ramsey or Ramsay back.

The bastard of Bolton would certainly do wonders for team toughness.

(Sorry for another Game of Thrones references, I can't help myself)

I'm disappointed in you. I want some QoC GoT statistics. :)

Vogl had this last week about people Rolston has worked with.

Friedman mentions this

7. I wonder if one of Ron Rolston's assistants in Buffalo will be Mark Morris, head coach of the AHL Manchester Monarchs. Morris hired Rolston as his assistant back in 1996 at Clarkson. Lately, Morris has done a great job with the Los Angeles Kings' AHL prospects.

=================

Morris sounds like someone who can work with a young team and wouldn't be a threat to Rolston.

If Jeff Blashill might get an interview for the Stars head coach; I don't see how he would come to the Sabres as an assistant - better off staying as HC of the Griffins.
