LGR4GM Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I'll be the first dissenter in terms of who it is - not the fact he is an outsider (that is not relavent to me as there are plenty of former Sabres who have proven themselves as coaches.) I don't see anything in his head coaching career that stands out to help the Sabres. http://www.denverpos...che/ci_12523849 My guess is his ability to coach young players. "He was a hard-working guy when he played, and that's what he expects from all his players," said MacKenzie, who played with the Avalanche and Monsters in 2008-09. - Press Conference coming around 4:30pm today -
nobody Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Pat Leonard @NYDNRangers 29m Confirmed. Scott Arniel joining Alain Vigneault's staff w #NYR as an assistant
dudacek Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Looks like he's got enough experience to pass board scrutiny. Grumpy old guy sounds good to me.
Iron Crotch Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I honestly thought Sacco was the worst head coach in the league last year based on his team's positioning in the defensive zone. But, if he is only in charge of offense then hopefully he makes a positive impact next year...
IKnowPhysics Posted July 2, 2013 Author Report Posted July 2, 2013 I don't see anything in his head coaching career that stands out to help the Sabres. That's fair, his numbers aren't impressive, but there's a little more there. First, the ownership/financial situation in Colorado is horrid. The rosters he was given sucked donkey dick. The season before he was hired was Tony Granato's last, in which Colorado finished 28th in the league in points. But in '09-'10, Sacco took that very much unchanged roster to 2nd in the Northwest Division (behind VAN) with 95 points, earning them the 8 seed. While it's not surprising that they got womped on by #1 SJ in the first round, they still took that series to six games. That year they were sixth in the league in goals per game, but did so with only 28 shots per game (29th in the league). Sacco ended up a finalist for the Jack Adams, along with Dave Tippett and Barry Trotz.
nobody Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I'm not expecting any improvement in either special teams, whichever Sacco may be in charge of, based on his statistics with Colorado.
TrueBlueGED Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Meh. I'm just glad we finally hired somebody.
... Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Meh. I'm just glad we finally hired somebody. And that he/she doesn't have ties to Buffalo.
thewookie1 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Sacco, well Colorado's offense wasn't terrible I guess.
spndnchz Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Some PP/PK numbers 2009-2010 PP was 15th in league at 18% Sabres were 13th PK was 21st in league at 80% Sabres were #2 2010-2011 PP was 11th in league at 18.5% Sabres were 9th PK was 30th in league at 76% Sabres were 13th 2011-12 PP was 9th in league at 18.4% Sabres were 16th PK was 12th in league at 83% Sabres were 19th Disclaimer: Not sure if he was in charge of PP/PK

Paul Stastny being injured for half that season didn't help Granato.
TrueBlueGED Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Paul Stastny being injured for half that season didn't help Granato. And Paul Stastny morphing into a mediocrity didn't help Sacco.
JJFIVEOH Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Rolston didn't know Sacco prior to hiring? Is this a Darcy hire in the event Rolston doesn't pan out as head coach? Bill Hoppe @BillHoppeNHL 11m Ron Rolston didn't know Joe Sacco prior to the hiring. #Sabres Expand
tom webster Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 No real problem with the hire but I thought the delay was because the coaches they wanted were still coaching late in playoffs. Or was it that the coach they wanted was hoping for a better gig? Rolston didn't know Sacco prior to hiring? Is this a Darcy hire in the event Rolston doesn't pan out as head coach? Bill Hoppe @BillHoppeNHL 11m Ron Rolston didn't know Joe Sacco prior to the hiring. #Sabres Expand I believe they were both assistants on one of the US teams. My guess is that it would be hard to work for the same team and not know each other. Somebody has their stories mixed up.

My guess is that it would be hard to work for the same team and not know each other. Somebody has their stories mixed up. That's what I'm thinking too. If Rolston spent so much time thinking about who to bring in, I doubt he would hire somebody he doesn't know. Waiting to see if any more tweets come in to confirm or not.
LGR4GM Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Do we have the audio from the Sacco press conference also Sacco... I have heard that somewhere before... We got the Sacco correct? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFBvYzhG3KE
thesportsbuff Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I'm happy with the hiring. I would actually be happier if it turns out to be true that Rolston didn't know him prior to the hiring -- that means, for once, they actually went through a legitimate interview process and Sacco earned the job, as opposed to just hiring your buddy/former player/whatever. I think it's a step in the right direction to bring in somebody from the outside with no ties to the organization, and it doesn't hurt that he has head coaching experience.
LGR4GM Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Here we go: http://video.sabres.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=1373 Reporter (Hamilton maybe): "Coach did you know him before you interviewed him?" Rolston "No, no"

Sabres Fan in NS Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I have trouble seeing RR as a real motivator. Maybe he's different in practice and in the room / behind the bench, but I had to fight to keep from dozing off from the 2 minute mark. Is it just me, or did it seem like he was announcing the hiring of his replacement in a year, or two?
LastPommerFan Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 A guy from the outside with head coaching experience? More of exactly what we wanted? right?
JJFIVEOH Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I've lost count of how many times I said 'Joe Flacco' in my mind today.
Taro T Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I've lost count of how many times I said 'Joe Flacco' in my mind today. And I tend to associate him with The League's 'Sacco Bowl.'
