Rolston is pretty boring but I'd bet if he was new to the org today (as opposed to 1.5 years ago) people would be more welcoming like we were when he was brought on for the Amerks.

WHAT??? If the Sabres had hired him with nothing more than his U18 references in his resume, I'd be even more pissed!

why do I have a feeling you would have bellyached no matter who was named coach. you don't like the Rolston hiring, for what this team is who would you have hired?

Actually you are wrong about me complaining no matter who the coach would have been. How the F*** do you know? Is it the crystal ball you pulled out of your a$$ that allows you to make such astute predictions?

That being said, it is not my job to pick a candidate, I will leave that to DR, but someone with more HC experience or NHL experience would be a good starting point. I don't need to name them to know that there are dozens of more qualified candidates out there.

Am I thrilled? No. Surprised? No. Expected that Darcy would do this? Yes. I hope that Rolston assembles a staff that devise a power play and a above average defense. I know it is hard to make gold out of straw with the talent they have but meaningful improvement would be appreciated. Tired of seeing this team mired in the bottom third on team categories. Rolston has a huge task ahead of him and the biggest obstacle could be the guy that hired him.

You want to tell any one of your players you don't think they have a shot at the playoffs this year? And it's going to be three years before we're going to be any good? I think that is insane regardless of whether it's possible or likely or not. That's like telling them before a Penguins game, "We have VERY little chance of coming out of here with a win, so don't get your hopes up. I'm just being realistic." That's like telling your child, "Look kid, realistically, you have very little chance of doing anything whatsoever with your life and for a long time your life is going to suck."

I'm not here to argue with you, but you don't think the players know they are rebuilding? They are making millions whether they get to the playoffs or not. Being realistic is knowing this team is NOT built for any type of playoff run if they even made the playoffs. Have you been watching any of the games so far? Players are getting absolutely crushed out there. Each year the playoffs get nastier and more physical. I think this team still lacks enough size, not to mention overall talent, to make a deep playof run.

I'm not trying to argue with you either. It's all in good fun. I thought the Sabres were terrible of course, and are very far from making any serious playoff run. Actually, in the press conference, Rolston pretty much said the same thing, and inferred at least that we weren't built for a long playoff run even if we squeaked into the playoffs, and that is precisely what he is trying to build.

But I really don't think any coach anywhere can realistically tell the press in public that he thinks his team has no chance to make the playoffs. Pro sports are a game of egos. They have to go into every single game thinking they are going to win, or they will not play very well, regardless of whether they are going to win.

Strike 3 - The roster - other than a couple names like Vanek and Miller (who both seem on the verge of leaving) you have a highly paid roster - highest in the NHL - of mid-tier talent.

Next season the Sabres will be middle of the road salary wise and that's before losing Vanek and Miller

I'm rather surprised that the team didn't interview other candidates before coming to this decision. Quite surprised in fact. I'm not sure what to make of it.

I guess what we don't know is, what are the metrics the team used/is using to determine the correct coach for the team. I have a thought streaming around my noggin right now that this may be a harbinger of Vanek and maybe Miller being gone. And that those spots will be filled by young players (ie. Armia and Hackett). And if that is the case, maybe overall wins and losses aren;'t going to be the primary metric to judge a HC by. That the metric might be something that is more closely related to player development. And maybe Rolston is the guy that fits.

I dunno. Just a thought trying to see this from the teams perspective.

Rolston on Foligno: potential to be best power forward in the game, needs more consistency

Rolston: Short term, make playoffs. Long term, make a run.

Rolston: Center position most important

Rolston: with all the new technologies in the game you need to stay connected

Rolston on Grigorenko: still young, ton of talent, needs work on d-game, tempo.

Rolston: need more grinding players, playoff caliber

He seemed genuinely happy about talking Sabres. I took in a different view of him today.

That was a good interview on WGR and an excellent summary by you.

Good comments. He seems to know what this teams issues are, which is nice.

I'm willing to give him his chance, since I don't have anything against his demeanor and his glasses. <_<

Rolston: need more grinding players, playoff caliber

Darcy advertised we're gonna suck and suffer, and the team goes out, doesn't conduct any coaching search, so Rolston really didn't beat anybody out, and only success is pretty much in pee-wee. Yeah, the playoff caliber players are gonna be flocking to Buffalo.

Rolston as interim vs. Rolston as head coach will be very different. There will be training camp next season, which will separate the good teams from the bad, and the great from the good, leaving the Sabres exposed, and until mid-season or so, Sabres won't be facing a back-up goalie, like we did once we fired Ruff and hired Rolston. Third, it's not a 48 game season next year, it's gonna be 82, and if we allow 40 shots a game and have to play in our zone all game, it will wear us down much quicker then a shortened season.

On top of all that, Vanek and Miller don't even know if they should be crying or laughing right now. Either way, their agents know to get them the eff out of Buffalo as soon as possible. We're a mess and they'll want no part of it.

I've said it all year, the Buffalo Sabres are worse off with Pegula then we were before, which is unimaginable with the whole "Pegula Day" hype. Now, i'm certain. Sabres will be floating at rock bottom next season with little to no hope on the horizon.

As much as everyone has bellyached about another late season run that amounts to nothing, I fail to see how this move is the "same old Sabres." Look at the roster turnover since two seasons ago. Now there's a different coach. This is such a different squad in it's make up, and we haven't really seen what Ron is capable of yet. He simplified the game plan and got a bunch of ahlers to play for their jobs while the goaltenders played out of their minds, but now we get to see what he does with a full camp and a full season. I had plenty of criticism for Ronnie during his short stint so far, but I really don't understand those claiming that him being the guy is the same old Sabres.

In before "it all starts at the top blarghdsasrs Pegula kept Regier."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not entirely pleased that Regier is still here to make these decisions. But I have no ammunition to levy a complaint against a coach who only has a quarter of a season under his belt with a mediocre team. Who am I to criticize him?

Okay, drunk or idiot or drunken idiot...not sure which you prefer.

I could care less what you use, I don't need a pacifier like you when the Sabres do something I don't agree with. Just a sport, I don't get too high or too low. Bigger issues out there.

Like when and where will you possibly get enough money for your next 40 ouncer? ;)

Where is it etched in stone that RR will be great for the young kids? Why? Just because the majority of his resume revolves around coaching U18 teams? You mean like how Brayden McNabb took a huge step back this year? Or is it how Luke Adam's career continues to spiral downward out of control?

Huge leap of faith if you ask me.

Yeah! Why assume he knows what he's doing with young players when all he ever did is coach young players at the highest level for years.

Maybe he replied with a not so happy look cause you brought up hockey after saying it pissed him off.

I'm not that disrespectful, I didn't bring up the hockey, he even had the bartender turn the playoffs off cause he was too angry to see it on TV. That's true passion

I'm not too worried about his demeanor or his glasses. I just like having a little fun with them.

I'm mostly interested in the things I see on ice. When he activates the defense. Who he plays with a one goal lead.

His line changes etc., and to a lesser extent who he scratches.

So far, we've seen very conservative coaching decisions with a very simplified style.

As far as I know Rolston might be a genius at mixing and matching lines and pressing advantages,

but I don't think he's had the personnel to play that way. There was such a lack of talent that it was

difficult to find a Rolston signature on the club.

I'm not completely against the move of hiring Rolston, but because I haven't seen much yet, I'm not energized by it either.

I'd be excited if his brother joined the staff.

Agree, which is what most the feeling of this board expresses except for the few Koolaid drinkers and the increasing number of overall negatrons. I think most of the vitrole is toward Regier. Mine has been since the Briere Vanek debacle. Drury was gone, he wanted to go to NYC which is what bothers me the most, because that was easily foreseable yet Regier f'd up Briere, lost Dumont and rented a bunch of underperforming bums except Zubrus who they also let get away. Also Zach Kassian was supposed to be something... not... Why hasn't Armia been called up given the lack of scoring talent and why the Hell is Stafford still on this team???? Also, Grigerenko was tagged as being lazy as the reason he dropped.... hmmm looking more and more apt a tag, but yet Marcy is being given another chance....

Regier in my mind is a MORON and until he is gone I cannot in good conscience give TPegs the benefit of the doubt.
