spndnchz Posted May 7, 2013 Author Report Posted May 7, 2013 Rolston will choose his supporting cast this week. Darcy says Rolston got a multi-year deal. It started when he was named interim coach. So, maybe two year deal that he's already coached one of? Rolston spoke of his brother Brian who just retired from playing. Saifd he's bounced ideas off of him a bunch. Brian has experience playing under some great coaches but Rolston doesn't know if he wants to make the transition to coaching yet.
nobody Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Rolston will choose his supporting cast this week. Next week Rolston will say the intention was to interview others for assistants but was impressed w the current guys teaching and motivating qualities.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 I watched the RR interview on Sabres.com Man, I have seen more enthusiasm at wakes ... from the dead person. From now on RR is officially demoted, IMO, from *wet blanket* to *wet noddle*. I'm wondering how someone like that could inspire anything out of his players. Maybe it's different in practice and the room?
Stoner Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Next week Rolston will say the intention was to interview others for assistants but was impressed w the current guys teaching and motivating qualities. Welp, this is where I draw the line on my tepid support for Ron. There shouldn't be any budget restraints when it comes time to build his staff. If we still have one of the least inexperienced coaching staffs in the league next season, I think I'm going to snap. A young (edit: inexperienced) guy like Ron is going to need all the help he can get. Go out and get a former head coach, or even two. (Maybe Lindy could come back and run the PP.) Seriously, honest to God, if Adams and Numminen are back, this franchise is totally off the rails. (They'll be back.)
WildCard Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Booooooooooooooooooo This team just refuses to get better. Deeply and profoundly disappointed. Exactly
... Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 There is zero surprise in this move. Considering where the franchise is at right now, it does make sense to me. Rolston isn't the Bill Cosby of coaches (at least publickly), but, to me, his most important asset is that the players like him. If the players like him, yet he can work them and get something out of them, then that's a step toward exercising those demons from the locker room. I mean, we learned that the coach really doesn't make that much of a difference, right? You may get more effort out of the team, but if the team inherently sucks, their effort can only take them so far. Frankly, the Sabres owed Rolston a solid for throwing him into the fire like that. He got it. What does it matter if the Sabres have an elite coach when they have a middling-AHL roster? Let Ron get his experience while the team rebuilds, and if he can lead them somewhere, all the better. We were warned. This is the Peglua-era Buffalo Sabres.
qwksndmonster Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 I like that Anchorman quotes can be used to directly refer to our coach. And I think he's mildly amusingly goofy looking,
Stoner Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Here's the huge concern about how this franchise operates under Pegula. Ted told a story on WGR this season about innocently (?) walking into Darcy's conference room last summer while on the hunt for Scooby Chzsnarks for Terry, who had set up camp in the arena (Ted's words; "set up camp," not "Scooby Chzsnarks"). In the room, Darcy was interviewing Ron. Ted sat down and joined in. Ted was impressed by the books Ron had read. Ron ends up head coach of the Sabres. The Three Metrosexuals. And Terry makes four? I'm not suggesting Darcy didn't make this decision, either, because it's right up his alley, all the way to the designer frames. But it also wreaks of ownership interference. Terry has his kind of guy. In a way, his owning the team seems to be a referendum on whether the "Pegula Way" can work in the NHL.
qwksndmonster Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 The team definitely seems to want to execute the long rebuild, so I don't hate Rolston as the coach. Definitely don't like heading down the path of a long rebuild though. I have no idea what PA is talking about.
darksabre Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Ron Rolston = George McFly He punched Claude Julien out at the Enchantment under the Sea dance?
OverPowerYou Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Well, Bills season starts today, for the next 3 years
MattPie Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 The Three Metrosexuals. And Terry makes four? I'm not suggesting Darcy didn't make this decision, either, because it's right up his alley, all the way to the designer frames. I'm not sure you understand that term. Looking at those three guys, that's the last thing I'd think of any of them.
Wyldnwoody44 Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Oddly enough i was drinking with Kaleta a few nights ago, and though us guys didn't really bring up hockey much (as it pissed Kaleta off) he was asked about the new coaching staff, and he replied with a not so happy look. He also broke his left hand in the phillly fight if anyone cares to know. Just strange that he didnt seem pleased with RR, personally I'm torn on the issue, I think some due diligence should have been in order, but ill give the guy a full season with a draft during a "rebuild" before I lamb baste him.
macsabre Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 From my perspective Rolson made no meaningful positive impact on the team. It seemed like side two of the same old record. He had his chance to make the team come together and in the end they dumped the vet talent. No fire in this guy at all. What a bad choice. I am listening to the WGR interview and I can hardly tell the difference between Darcy and Ron speaking. Are they related in some way? ;). Very very disappointed....

Not strange at all. Players really, really hate getting scratched. In their minds it rhymes with "waive."
TrueBlueGED Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Not strange at all. Players really, really hate getting scratched. In their minds it rhymes with "waive." Especially when they're a heart and soul player. Meanwhile, how long did it take Stafford to get scratched?

IKnowPhysics Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 But it also wreaks of ownership interference. Evidence?
Doohicksie Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 all the way to the 27-year-old designer frames. Fixed it for ya. (I was wearing glasses like that in the 1980s)
FGD59 Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Ron rolston = Kay Stephenson. Zero imagination, total bunker mentality hire, but really nothing changes unless Terry hires a Bill Polian/punch Imlach equivalent. The will occasionly develop and good player or 2, but their indentity, which is so necessary to compete in a hyper-emotional sport like hockey will remain SOFT. They will improve only to 8th place strugglers at best. I'm so deeply disappointed Darcy is still here. It makes all logical hope magical thinking. Red Wings make the playoffs for 22 years and we get this GM for 16. He got Everything he wanted from the Owner and flat out failed!
North Buffalo Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 It does kind of remind me of the fracking business... Get your money out of the ground, make sure your people tow the PR line by keeping a low but supportive profile. Boring draws less attention to all the damage you are actually doing and who cares if your product is tainted... Seriously, this is the classic corporate model, but it doesn't inspire to make a good hockey team... talent does and this team lacks a whole lot of that and the blame lies squarely at the feet of DR which is why I am so disappointed he is still around. RR could be a good coach, I agree the jury is out, but what you won't get is an honest straight forward assessment of what the Sabres diffiencies are and what the plan is to overcome them except for some meely mouthed evasive answers and its all the media's fault. Really DR, I don't see the Sabres in the playoffs, oh and shouldn't the rebuilding started 2 years ago, when they missed the playoffs.... That is on DR all the way and if he had any sense he would step down immediately stating this is just not working out, but hey we all know that is not going to happen... P.S. Doesn't Black remind you Sadam Hussein's PR guy as the American forces were advancing on Bagdad, stating "we are kicking the assess." Little did he know Bagdad was about to implode... At least the guy committed suicide after that once he realized the lies he was being fed...

carpandean Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 For anyone pointing to his record this season: In regulation: 8-11 (12 still tied) In overtime: 1-1 (10 still tied) In shootout: 6-4 9 out of 31 ROW is 29%, which is exactly the Sabres' season average (so, same as Lindy.) That's worse than any team's average other than Florida. Basically, with a few exceptions, they held on for dear life, hoping to get to the shootout, where they had a chance. We may very well see several more seasons of not in the cellar and not in the playoffs. His style will inflate their points, but even if they were to sneak into the playoffs, they'd have no bonus points or shootouts to count on.
