That Aud Smell Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Doesn't make much sense to me, but whatever. notwithstanding the additional overhead, i wonder whether there are additional "revenue centers" to be tapped into if you have 2 independent broadcasts. #waitsforPAtochimein
Doohicksie Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 One thing I like about RJ is that he's always calling the game. I know who has the puck. He isn't telling stories as a player is carrying up ice. If he's calling the game on the ice and messes up - he almost always corrects himself. Always calling the game is a must for any play-by-play guy. Call the game like you're calling a horse race. RJ has been the best at that style. Agreed with what X said above. A great thing about RJ is that he doesn't subscribe to that turbl modern trend of story-telling, narrative-building while calling the game. Emerick is actually quite competent as a PBP guy for hockey, but his producers clearly have him in that "sell the story" mode - "A funny thing about young Tyler Myers ... he used to fix recumbent bicycles in his spare time during those hot Houston summers, until his mother suggested -- here's a turnover and they SCORE!" -- Hate it. I hate it too. I'm here to watch a hockey game, not a human interest documentary. As bad as hockey is, the Olympics are 10 times worse though. Remember when they actually showed sports events during the Olympics?

I may be younger than you, but as far back as I can remember, US Olympic coverage has always been infected with a huge amount of "human interest" (actually no interest) nonsense.

I think it somewhat depends on when you're watching. The nightly show is brutal. The daytime (live) coverage isn't *as bad*.
Bullwinkle III Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 It only makes sense that the Sabres organization uses the non-RJ games to interview new announcers. Like most of you, I agree that right now Paul Hamilton is the front runner by a wide margin. However I've never heard Duff call a game and I am sure there are others with PA backgrounds that might be interested. But here's another thought: Who is to say that the announcer would even want the job full-time? Traveling seven or more months a year is difficult for many. Hamilton might want to remain a reporter and Duff a TV interviewer. Still, this time represents an opportunity to do a thorough search.
IKnowPhysics Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 It only makes sense that the Sabres organization uses the non-RJ games to interview new announcers... Still, this time represents an opportunity to do a thorough search. A 1000 times this. One of the many reasons that Rick is great, is because of his non-story-telling play by play. This was a product of being a radio play by play guy for so many years. So if you want to find and develop the next Rick, while still being able to listen to Rick on TV, split the radio and tv broadcasts and use WGR as a farm system for broadcast talent. Also, as I've said before, Duffer should be a lock for the TV color position. Keep Ray between the benches for humor and TV timeout insight.
TheMatrix31 Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 No Rick on the radio? Damn. I was looking forward to loading the stream up on my phone driving home from work. Gah.
Stoner Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 No Rick on the radio? Damn. I was looking forward to loading the stream up on my phone driving home from work. Gah. The idea of separate broadcasts was actually nixed when Rick said he would be coming back.
sabre snipe Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Rick to stay with the team for 3 more seasons, then Dan Dunleavy will assume play by play role. :( better win a cup in the next 3 years!
BuffalOhio Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Just got a text from WGR550. Three more years of RJ, then Dan Dunleavey takes over. Dunleavey takes over AFTER 2016 season. Dunleavey was awesome the couple games he did a few years ago, in my opinion. Classic Canadian hockey announcer sound. Very excited to hear this!
Stoner Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I guess I'll believe Rick quitting when I see it. In three years, the Sabres coming off their deepest run in the playoffs since 2007, Rick will be feeling better than he has in a long time… I suppose I can get behind this plan. I'll reserve comment on Dan. Anybody have a link to his Sabre calls? Selling him as a "up and comer" is a little odd thouhg, given his age and extensive resume.
LGR4GM Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Best I can find so far... not a play by play but at least he is talking

THE SUCCESSION PLAN Rick Jeanneret signs three-year deal; Dan Dunleavy joins broadcast crew: http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=679827&navid=DL|BUF|home
That Aud Smell Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I suppose I can get behind this plan. I'll reserve comment on Dan. Anybody have a link to his Sabre calls? Harrington posted one game call. (Holy cow - that starts out as a terrible game.) Selling him as a "up and comer" is a little odd thouhg, given his age and extensive resume. Black seems good for a weird comment like this with some regularity. As the linked press release indicates, Dunleavy is a 20+ year veteran in the broadcasting industry. Maybe Black was seeing him as a whipper snapper compared to RJ? Again, no real harm in the comment from Black, but there's part of it that makes him seem like a huckster. Dunleavy sounds every bit like an NHL play by play guy. I'm good with it.
CallawaySabres Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Great call (no pun intended). And if anyone thinks that Rick won't be called into to call the CUP IF they make it after he retires (within reason), they are crazy. It's the best of both worlds.....

Would be grossly unfair to Dunleavy. But what an intriguing idea.

And if anyone thinks that Rick won't be called into to call the CUP IF they make it after he retires (within reason), they are crazy. It's the best of both worlds..... But wasn't that an issue when LA won the cup? They have a legendary play-byplay guy, but with the playoffs on NBC he never called the games. The finals were all Emrick. If memory serves, the Kings had their announcers call the final and taped it, to release it after the fact. That was the only way the Kings fans were able to hear it from their guys.
Stoner Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 [/size] Dunleavy sounds every bit like an NHL play by play guy. I'm good with it. I dunno. The voice is decent but on the goal calls — that's downright Sylvester-esque. I guess we'll be more used to it in three years, but the voice/style transition is pretty jarring. Just seems like a safe choice. This fan base is used to Jeanneret's antics and eccentricities. But with so much money on the line, the suits weren't going to do anything crazy. Certainly no way the loose cannon Hamilton was going to get the job full-time. Too bad. It's official. I hate everything this regime does. But wasn't that an issue when LA won the cup? LGR4GM Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 "I will gladly step aside" Dudley speaking about when the Sabres make the Stanley Cup finals.

And if anyone thinks that Rick won't be called into to call the CUP IF they make it after he retires (within reason), they are crazy. It's the best of both worlds..... Hello Nostradamus. Dunleavey just said on Hockey Hotline he'd step aside for Rick if the team makes the Cup and Rick wants to do it.
chileanseabass Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 No radio in LA? I don't know, I just know that Miller & Fox, the usual TV tandem, weren't able to do it, so the Kings made it available another way. Interestingly, RJ and DD are on WGR right now, and DD just said he was open with Black and told him that if RJ is willing and able, when the Sabres get to the finals he'll gladly step aside to let RJ call it.

I hate everything this regime does. I think going with another eccentric caller would be the worst choice possible. You can't have somebody of a similar style follow a legend like Rick IMO. I wouldn't be able to stop myself from thinking "stop trying to be Rick, you never will be." But that's me.
