Jsixspd Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 I think it's likely he was following his big-brother's lead.... and it seems increasingly clear that big-brother had the Islamic thing going for him. Good article here on Chechnya and the issues there at Russia Today; http://rt.com/op-edg...g-caucuses-122/
SwampD Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 The Buffalo News headline is "Justice has won." There are no winners or losers in a tragedy like this. There is only sadness and the realization we are likely days or weeks away from the next tragedy. "There are three types of people in the world, well poisoners, lawn mowers, and enhancers of life." This is the time for the life enhancers to fill the spaces in between.

The guy still deserves his day in court and is presumed not guilty. A good defense attorney might even make it a game.

Stoner Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 He is on film leaving the rucksack that later exploded and had two shoot outs with the police. I think no defence attorney would want to touch this I missed the film of him setting down the rucksack. Did he fire at the police when his brother died? I'm not taking up his cause. Just pointing out these things need to be proven in court.
Neo Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 He is on film leaving the rucksack that later exploded and had two shoot outs with the police. I think no defence attorney would want to touch this I think the strength of evidence against the accused is well down the list of items defense attorneys consider when deciding whether or not to accept an assignment. This is not me being cynical. I am glad defense attorneys are available to all. Instead, this is me being realistic. There will be no shortage of qualified defense attorneys looking to join what could be the highest profile case in dozens of careers. Frankly, it's a no-lose situation. Further, defense attorneys define success in many ways, not just in terms of acquittals. For instance, turning this into an attractive plea, or avoiding a death sentence, could raise the business stature of a defense attorney if your point that the evidence is overwhelming proves true. IMHO, of course.
darksabre Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 Nicely put. I find the discourse on here, regardless of the world topic, to be enlightening. We are a diverse community that repeatedly demonstrates we can handle emotional topics with a remarkable degree of civility. For the most part we are self policing and care that our little coffee shop maintains its atmosphere. This board has evolved since I first joined. I can remember when it was exclusively a Sabres-only topic message board. Kudos to all on here, to our Mods, our Founder, and all that keep it real. And kudos to law enforcement for solving a horrific crime and moment in American history in just four days.

Just pointing out these things need to be proven in court. One of the victims who lost both legs below the knees has said he looked right into the eyes of one of the brothers as he set his pack on the sidewalk. Not sure which bro but thats about as eyewitness as you can get. A better idea may be to find out what causes a intelligent 19 year old kid to get involved in such a heinous act. Why would a kid with his entire life and endless possibilities a head of him throw it all away? Any information that can be obtained will be helpful in future investigations. One word. Religion. What else can bend a mind to batshit crazy lengths ?

TrueBlueGED Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 One word. Religion. What else can bend a mind to batshit crazy lengths ? Nationalism. Revenge for perceived slights or injustices. Plenty of things, when taken to the extreme, can contribute to extreme actions. Consider the pot stirred!

Robviously Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 This is interesting: http://www.businessinsider.com/murder-of-brendan-mess-the-best-friend-of-boston-bombing-suspect-tamerlan-tsarnaev-2013-4 The most intriguing nugget in the big Boston Globe profile of the Brothers Tsarnaev (the brothers suspected of carrying out the attack on the Boston Marathon) is this one. Gym owner Allan said that Tamerlan had once introduced him to an American, Brendan Mess, whom Tamerlan described as his best friend. Two years ago, Mess and two other men were brutally killed in a Waltham apartment where they were found by police with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana. The murders remain unsolved. This case will probably get a second look.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 Nationalism. Revenge for perceived slights or injustices. Plenty of things, when taken to the extreme, can contribute to extreme actions. Consider the pot stirred! I agree completely. Religion is often used to help stir the pot, but Nationalism is, IMO, the single most widely used tactic in order for the powers that be to insight madness. I sight the madness in the former Yugoslavia as an excellent example. As posted above, I would not be surprised if this was the the underlying feelings that lit the fuse in this tragic case.

shrader Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 I'm not sure that word even is an obscenity anymore. In the room I'm sitting in today, trust me it is. Some very ugly reactions here
bunomatic Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 Nationalism. Revenge for perceived slights or injustices. Plenty of things, when taken to the extreme, can contribute to extreme actions. Consider the pot stirred! I agree. Religion and nationalism intertwined are a deadly cocktail. In both cases one can be brainwashed from birth by ones parents and or relatives. In the case of religion imagine the harm they might have done had they not had that moral compass to keep them on the straight path.

There is only sadness and the realization we are likely days or weeks away from the next tragedy. I agree there are no winners. I don't agree with calling this a "tragedy" and saying that we are only a short time away from the next one. An earthquake or a tornado is a tragedy. This was an intentional act of mass murder, planned and executed by a destructive cancer of an ideology. That ideology is not going to stop trying to kill people unless it is stopped by force. The reason to catch him alive and interrogate him is to find out where he got his training, support, etc. and then destroy those resources.
LastPommerFan Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 You cannot destroy an idea with force.

I think there may be some justice in keeping him alive for 80 years in an 8'x4' with some time to ruminate and to enjoy the Nutriloaf.
