Anyone getting raped on a popular tv show, (woman, man, farmanimals) will cause alot of anger.  But it was not needed to portray this, it already was implied pretty much.

And rape victims certainly won't be happy about seeing such a thing.

What would have made a better scene, all around, is if Theon came to her defense.  Taking out a Bolton, or at least knocking him out, would have put more suspense into the story line.

If Sansa had taken control of the situation it would have been a better scene. She could resent Ramsey just as much and play like she consented.

The thing is as I have stated before, the scene wasn't about Sansa making a hard choice, it was about Ramsey and Theon.  They use rape as a plot prop but then ignore any emotional fallout from their female characters about it.  The main point I can think of opposite to that is Jamie's hand.  Jamie is still depicted dealing with the emotional trauma of that.  Sansa and the bread riots wasn't about Sansa almost getting raped. It was about the Hound having a human side.

It should cause anger.  It was implied and you could have had her look trepidatious as the door closed with Ramsey smiling.  Hell I saw Mad Max Fury Road which is about sex slaves in some ways and no one was raped once on screen but you knew it had happened.  They did it for shock value which is the problem I and others I think have with it.

Disagree very strongly that it's based on who got raped (except for in a story sense, Sansa's been tortured too much already and this does little to add to her character).  I think people are sick of the writers leaning on rape as a way to depict women suffering.  At least, that's why I hope they're enraged.

That was my issue with the scene and the reliance on this as a plot element. Martin's writing never used rape or sexual violence to move the plot along. It was used to show the terrible setting that war and conflict creates, but in an ancillary way. The show writers for HBO chose to adapt Martin's work to add these rape scenes (as listed above) to add edginess/shock value. Just like they showed all of the Theon torture scenes for no reason.

All of these choices seem to be so the show can say "look at us, we're edgy and pushing the envelope". It was and continues to be unnecessary and takes away from what is a well written original story.

Another somewhat quiet episode but it felt like the events of the week at least had some juice to them. Worthwhile, I'd say.

Anybody that hasn't watched this week or up to this point DO NOT READ the post below mine.

While your points seem valid to people who read the books but to the average GOT watcher, HBO is creating a series BASED off the novels and they're tweeking it to appeal to the masses.

My gripe with the show is that it very rarely rewards the viewer with the innate craving of seeing good triumph over evil.

For instance, Cersai is in prison, which is gratifying to me. However, I highly doubt HBO will pull an Eddard Stark and shockingly kill off a key antagonist to gain "shock value".

The books make you wait for a very long time to see the sympathetic characters strike back at the antagonists as well.  The key difference is that before the comeuppance is served, both sides of the conflict are shown and by the time "good" is triumphing over "evil" it has shifted to "this gray character that I liked killed another gray character that I sorta liked..."

At least another regular female cast member got threatened with rape again!  Good thing she didn't get raped!  What a fantastic show.

Episode 8 has been set up nicely , allthough starting to feel like this whole season is just a setup for the next one.   Don't expect anything spectacular to be honest.

This is looking like a set up season. I can only think of about 2 things they can do here at the end.

It was a decent episode but again you can really see what happens when Martin isn't involved with things.  I must say I enjoyed this episode a lot more than some others this season.

Good call on being a set up season.  Heck, AFFC and ADWD are both mostly setup for stuff that's going to happen in books 6 and 7 (also possibly 8, if trends continue).

6 is called The Winds of Winter

7 is called A Dream of Spring

7 was originally titled A Time for Wolves which most people like better.  I think I like dream of spring better.

Everybody is raving about tonight's episode aside from a few book readers. Looks like I'll watch it tonight.

Let me know what happens, I'm curious to see if they ended it where I thought they would. I would not, not, read that spoiler tag unless you've finished DoD

Edit: Either I'm drunk or the spoiler tag isn't working.

Where the other Targaryen is introduced and begins his assault on Westeros

isn't working

Edit: Nope, just drunk.

WC you sweet summer child, that plotline is NOT happening.

The A Feast for Crows title drop was really strange.

Episode was effin' awesome.  Kit Harrington/his stuntmen are really great at sword fighting.  His weight is always directly over his feet, which he moves constantly.  The legs feed the wolf in sword fighting as well as hockey.  AND THEY FINALLY SHOT SOME ACTION SCENES WITHOUT CUTTING EVERY HALF SECOND! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Nitpick: They really should have pushed some of the content of this episode into the two previous episodes.  It's a bit concerning that they STILL haven't figured out how to pace the seasons after writing 4 of them.

I have issues with how they depicted the White Walkers / white mists.  The fires should have gone out, the seawater should have frozen, the wildlings and black brothers should barely have been able to breathe.  Any why did the wights turn into fast zombies from 28 days later?

Episode 8 is always the best one :D

Allthough with all the white walkers, im getting to much of zombie feeling.   Nice sword john snow has though.

Fantastic episode. Brilliantly executed. Everything prior to the end was basically boring business as usual but tons of fun thereafter. Two more episodes and then we wait.

That was a good episode.  The Tyrion stuff was fantastic IMPO. Cersei getting smacked was amusing as well. Man if Tywin were around the high sparrow would be totally screwed.

Obviously the John Snow stuff was amazing. I agree that the straight filming made the action that much better. I am so sick of cut up choppy action scenes.  When all the people outside that gate just vanished, my hair stood on end.  Loved that entire sequence.

I have no problem with snow zombies at all.  It was always how I pictured the books.  The White Walkers dead eyes are creepy as hell and I love it.

I also like how they are setting things up with John's squire back at Castle Black.  I wonder if that comes this season or next but come it will.

I honestly think the mass outrage is because it's Sansa. I just don't understand why so many people are outraged at this rape when it's hardly the first time it has been depicted on the show. Dany's first time with Drogo was a rape, and I don't remember any outrage at all. The Dothraki war preparations showed gang rape, and I don't remember anything. But starting with the Cersei/Jaime rape (for the record, I don't think that was intended to be a rape, the director just totally botched the execution of the scene), it seems the sensitivity to it has been kicked up many notches. I totally get criticizing the show actually showing rapes, but I don't understand the totally inconsistent outrage. Why is this scene causing viewers to quit when others didn't? I think it's because of the specific characters involved.

That said, I am glad that so many are bothered, because people should be this disturbed by rape. In real life I've heard way too many casual dismissals of sexual assault claims with things like "oh she was drunk" or "she's dressed like a slut so she wanted it" or "she's just after his money" than I'd care to remember.

Separately, these sand snakes are just awful. Bad writing, worse casting.

I think the Sansa outrage from two weeks ago is because they've gone to the well a few too many times now with rape as a plot device.  The writers sometimes revel in making the show "misery porn" and at some point it's offensive how these guys basically default to "rape mode" every time they're out of ideas for how to up the stakes in the show.  Plus to even get to that scene, they had to make Littlefinger do something completely inexplicable in just dropping Sansa off to the Boltons and then dashing off.  So it took some pretty bad writing just to get to the point where they could use rape as a storytelling crutch for the millionth time.

Anyways, the last two weeks before last night were pretty lousy and had me worried that the show was losing it in the post Storm of Swords era.  Then last night was probably one of the best episodes they've ever done.  Every scene in the first half was concise and great (even the Arya scenes) and the whole second half in Hardhome was terrific -- possibly the best battle scene they've done.

What does it say about me that, despite being a grown man with a family, a job and a house, during Jon Snow's fight with the head white walker, I yelled at the TV, "That's right, ! Valerian steel!"?
