Taro T Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I'm talking in reference to our rebuild plans. ie. several seasons down the pike. We are concentrating on center depth, and I am good with that plan, but if we ignore wingers like we ignored centers in the past there will still be serious flaws in our roster. Top level wingers are a necessary part of cup contenders too. And I was looking at that as a starting point for wings 2 years out. (Assumes that Ott is a Sabre that long.) Agree that they should be looking balanced, in theory, but the C cupboard has been bare for so long since Drury-Briere-Zubrus all leaving they have to build it up. And if youth is the way they will build it, they realistically need at least 8 (if not more like 12) prospects to fill the 3 additional C slots that are open besides CH. Once they have C depth (and they MAY be at a point now where 2 years out they'll have it), then go BPA in the 1st 2-3 rounds and draft for weakness in the later rounds hoping to catch something. You're right that they only have Armia as projecting to top 2 lines from the wings, but except for Grigorenko, prior to the most recent trade, did they have any C's that projected to top 2 lines. (Sounds like Girgensons projects more to #3.) The cupboards are bare down on the farm across the F board IMHO. I'm good with the focus being on restocking the bigger need for now.
nfreeman Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I think there is a difference between a winger/center vs. a center/winger. I think both Larsson and Girgensons are the latter. GO SABRES!!! Why do you think this?
X. Benedict Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 They already have big organizational holes coming at wing. Armia is the only top 6 candidate at wing that I can think of. I think wing is often where you can find players on the market. But that's a good point. I don't mean to suggest every pick in the second round should be a center.
spndnchz Posted April 4, 2013 Author Report Posted April 4, 2013 Pommers first Wild interview http://video.wild.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=845&id=235768&cmpid=embed-share-video
X. Benedict Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Pommers first Wild interview http://video.wild.nh...bed-share-video That's probably the most relaxed interview he's given this year. He might be a player that grows a size without the C.

If we are looking 2-3 years out we are looking at a fleet of centers right now that consists of Hodgson, Grigo, Girgs, Larssen, Catenacci, and Ennis I suppose. We are nearly where you want to be (8 prospects) now. And I think I may be missing one as well. We still don't have a game breaker at center (well, maybe Grigo becomes that guy). I still want to see the team strive for a game breaking center in the draft. But really, the team has done its job in the last 2 seasons and went after centers. I really feel that continuing the trend for 2 more drafts puts us in a bad place forward-wise.

Why do you think this? Chris Drury. When he was on Colorado when they won a cup, he was actually their 5th line center playing wing until Yelle(?) got hurt.
Trettioåtta Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Pommers seems happy to be out of Buffalo. That locker room must suck this year
Weave Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 That's probably the most relaxed interview he's given this year. He might be a player that grows a size without the C. He'll grow a size just because he doesn't have to carry the load. He's in a position he belongs in, very good support role.
Robviously Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Pommers seems happy to be out of Buffalo. That locker room must suck this year What is the cause of this? Leopold made it pretty clear that our room was a completely unhappy place and WGR was talking yesterday about how there were rumblings like that for years. Is it Miller? Vanek? Stafford? This is another reason I'm wishing we'd have cleaned house a little more dramatically yesterday. Clear out whatever negative atmosphere there was and let something new and better grow in its place.

Robviously Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 maybe it is the fact we suck and everyone knows it The rumblings about the lifeless room go all the way back to the year they won the division with Myers leading the way. And they finished strong each of the past two seasons so they don't always suck. And it's not like there's no talent. The Sabres are consistently less than the sum of their parts. I think the culture/atmosphere/chemistry is killing them. Time to shake the etch a sketch.

My theory is that the team put a level of responsibility and leadership on players that couldn't handle it. Have you ever had a boss or leader that didn't want the job of leading and wasn't very good at it? In my experience those folks tend to radiate their internal stress onto those around them. take a look at thew Minny Pominville interview. Pommer is relaxed and personable. That right there is a new man without a care in the world. I bet he's loose in the Minny lockerroom. I bet he's been anything but loose since '07 in Buffalo.

Lindy's Puppy Mill...... It's going to take more than 6 weeks with a Rolston and shedding Ruff's hand-chosen leader of the puppies in order to get a viable group together. It is like a POW camp.....sure the boys were freed, but how long does it take to readjust back to normal society? Ott is doing just fine, but he played 20 games under Ruff.
Trettioåtta Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 See above. You too. Well trading Roy probably made the place more somber The players from the 09-10 team still with us: Stafford Hecht Vanek Myers Miller Kaleta Sekera Blame one of these guys - Hecht is the usual choice around here Alternatively, it could be Buffalo. I would hate to play in Buffalo everyone just whines all the time - I wasn't on this board for the 05-07 period, were people even happy then?
Weave Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I think it's that damn Indian burial ground. Is the Sabres lockerroom built on an ancient burial ground? Does Pegs need to hire a midget clairvoyant?

And I'd probably add Porter to your list of prospects and subtract Ennis.
SwampD Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Is the Sabres lockerroom built on an ancient burial ground? Does Pegs need to hire a midget clairvoyant? He already did. Remember when Gerbe buried something at center ice? It didn't take.
