nucci Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I slept on the trade and woke up this morning having read up on the prospects. I still don't like it. If all goes well Larsson will be a solid 3rd line winger with leadership potential. Hackett could maybe be a starter, is likely to be a backup, and theoretically could never be more than an AHL call up. As for the picks, well I guess I will reevaluate that situation this summer. MN 1st is going to be a late first, I hope Darcy can use the 3 2nds we have and move that pick up a ways. Until the draft happens, I think this draft is meh. Is it the trade itself you don't like or the fact it was Pominville? I don't think he was worth re-signing to another long term deal and we needed to move him to start over. Don't be surprised if Vanek and Miller are moved this summer.
SDS Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I found it more weird that every poster on the HF board actually spelled his name correctly but at least 1/3 of the posters here can't. Bad fans or stupid fans? 1/3? Nah... The filter has worked for the most part. It only caught a few when it was put in and it occasionally trips someone up. FWIW, I laugh every time I see it. I'm simple that way.

I would rather have seen Vanek and Miller moved than Jason Pominville. I am not sure if that answers your question? My other issue is the return, unless Larsson and something else in that trade pan out we lost it.

In the meantime, take your Pominville blowup doll out and console yourself. WOW!
LGR4GM Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Well then maybe you should wait and see how it PANS OUT. In the meantime, take your Pominville blowup doll out and console yourself. WOW! I find it funny that I have been arguing for a rebuild for the better part of 2 years now and when I dislike how that rebuild is going with repect to the pominville trade, I am instantly told to "take your Pominville blowup doll out and console yourself". Jason Pominville was and is a very good hockey player and a veteran leader. I am sad to see him go and I am concerned that the return we got may fall short. Voicing that concern is perfectly logical. Our core has changed and Vanek and Miller will be going next I think. This rebuild will take 2-3yrs.
dudacek Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 So is Lastpommerfan changing his screen name to Firstlarssonfan, or will he wait to see who we get with the picks?

I think the goal for him is #2 center who plays a strong game and demonstrates leadership. Big difference there. I agree that we'll need to wait and see what happens with the picks. (BTW, Minnesota is one of 5 teams with 44 points, and another team has 43 -- not important, I just found it interesting.) And the definitive statement about his "leadership" was made when he, as captain, was the first responder to Miller-Lucic and skated casually away.

As far as what we received, won't really know for a bit.
Trettioåtta Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Our return is very green at the moment. If you look at what Philly got for Richards (Schenn, Simmonds and a 2nd) then what they got was a lot more legit - Schenn was the best player not in the NHL, a top 5 overall pick, and Simmonds had already put up nice numbers and was 23. We got players who have not proven a thing, who were drafted lower in the standings. Darcy must really like this draft because he said the 1st was the key piece of the deal. So there must be two players he really likes. The return on this, unlike the Richards trade, is not guaranteed Larsson could be a 3rd line winger with leadership, Hackett could be a back-up at best, and the picks might never see NHL pucks (54% of second rounders never play a game in the NHL). The Hodgson trade addressed a need - whilst it will be a few years before we know how either player fully turns out, we know that it was a good trade because we needed a top c rather than a power forward. This trade doesn't address a specific need, it is a rebuild trade and a risky one at that. We gave up Pommers for future assets and as has been discussed because they are future assets they should be better in their prime than Pommers was. Time will tell

I donno how late that pick is going to be. Minni lost again on the road last night and their road record is 8-9-1 but their home is 13-4-1. They're the Western Conference version of the 2011/2012 Winnipeg Jets. I doubt they miss the playoffs but they could easily end up in 6th or 7th which would mean they would have to win a decent number of road playoff games. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're out in the first round.

I just wish it had happened three years ago right after we lost the Boston series, which many here were clamoring for then (not sure if I was one of them). We would have gotten a much higher return for all three of these guys and we'd be staring at the playoffs right now. Heck, Lindy might even still be around.

They are going to be good going into the playoffs and I think they have a very legitimate chance of making out of the first round.

X. Benedict Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I'm just happy Pommers is gone, nice player, but not a strong enough leader for the NHL. Not his fault he found himself in that position, but whatever. Emo-man next please. I wonder how many people realize how good Pommer is. He was incredibly durable, smart, great shot, good vision, unreal balance on his skates. Extremely versatile. He finishes twelfth in points on the all-time Sabres list. I'll miss him. I loved watching him play. I never doubted his effort or commitment to the team. I hope he wins a cup in Minny. That team is now stacked.

And even if he were the worst NHL captain ever (he isn't), he's still one good hockey player. Wasn't there a goalie a few years back who said that he was nervous every time Pommer had the puck? That said, I do understand that the Sabres can't rebuild without making moves.
Trettioåtta Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Why are you comparing this trade to the Richards trade? Richards is a much better player than Pommer. He has a physical side to his game - but they are equal on offense and defence. He would bring in a greater return, (i would say maybe no 2nd for Pommers), however, the point i am making is that he got a much more certain return - it was easy to see what the future of those players would be.
LGR4GM Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 I am sorry are we saying Mike Richards is better than Jason Pominville? Because that is flat out bullsh!t. I won't retract or defend that statement because it is a fact. Have fun.

... Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 So, wait, Darcy got rid of Pominville because people on this board wanted him gone?

If the Kings had offered Richards for Pommer yesterday, do you think DR would have accepted? How about most other GMs? I wonder how many people realize how good Pommer is. I can see him doing well in Minny or anywhere else where he can be a complementary guy.
