I see Ennis go to the dirty areas every game without fail. He drives to the front of the net against bigger opponents at every opportunity. Just sayin

Gerbe certainly gets his nose dirty.

He is also completely ineffective at it

Or maybe he was forcing the Sabres hand for as much as he could get because of the corner the Sabres were backed into after losing Drury and Briere.

This is the right way to look at it.

I mean, wouldn't anyone? 7M/yr?!

Nice sentiment but he should learn to proof his column. Typos galore.

It's Garth from HockeyBuzz. He's one step above Garth from Wayne's World.

A professional journalist he is not. I do, however, appreciate his love for the sport and the info he links.

Pomonville, Mikku Koivu and Zach Parise,… that is on helluva line. I'm really glad I don't hate the Wild.

One of my closest friends lives in St. Paul (and grew up there); his text: "Wow. Your CAPTAIN?! We're losing all our excuses for losing. Thanks! Oh, and sorry."

I'm pretty sure that even the "sorry" part was genuine.

That team just got really, really good. Scary good, in the words of RJ.

They added a defensive 60 point player. It wouldn't shock me if they made it to the final. Anaheim and Chicago did nothing today

What Norman said was" not one of these players goes to the dirty areas". I was responding to that by pointing out instances where they do. Whether they're good at it or not wasn't the point. ;)

Not seeing the Wild getting that far, but we'll see.

It's interesting to remember that the first chance Vanek had to leave the Sabres he signed an offer sheet with the Oilers. He didn't re-sign with the Sabres, he was forced to stay a Sabre. Now that the Sabres are "rebuilding" I have little doubt that Vanek will be gone at the end of his contract. He seems like a smart guy, I doubt he wants to waste the rest of his career.

Pretty sure that was less about him being desperate to leave the Sabres and more about him suddenly being offered $50,000,000 by another team -- an offer he knew he'd never get from the Sabres based on their demonstrated lack of interest in paying guys like Drury and Briere.

How many GMs get #1 picks at the deadline? Ours did two years in a row. Who was the GM the last time the Sabres were cup contenders? Who drafted the last couple of AHL rookies of the year?

This reminds me of all the people who wanted Fitz cut from the Bills asap. Once he was gone all the same people realized the Bills had no QB. So now we are supposed to get rid of a GM who gets talent because the coaches can't make that talent play?

PTR

Regier was the GM the last time we were Cup contenders, although by now that seems like more of a fluke than anything. Based on the fact that he didn't make any deadline deals in 2006 to help the team win, it doesn't seem like he knew what he had that year. And his moves for 2006-2007 only made that team worse. So we were contenders, except that Regier noticed too late and then didn't seem to understand why.

And we can probably stop celebrating the "three AHL Rookies of the Year in a row" thing. One is Gerbe, best known for being a folk hero in Buffalo, and the other is Luke Adam, who the franchise basically gave up on. (The other is Ennis.)

Minnesota became a contender today. They got the best two-way forward available in trade, and gave up future, not present, for him. Chicago is a force to be dealt with, but, like you imply, it just got a whole lot more interesting in "the State of Hockey" (as Minnesota calls itself).

Chicago is a lot more vulnerable than they think (or maybe than most people think).

And the Penguins have come crashing down to Earth. The Playoffs should be entertaining to say the least.

Why do you think it's a problem having midlevel AHL quality goaltending and running with it.

Isn't the grand experiment over? Darcy under-valued the real core of this team and over-valued the remaining scraps. He hit the jackpot when the league cracked down on holding, interference, and obstruction and fell WAY behind the curve when the league returned to hard grit and physical intensity , particularly during playoff time.

Seriously, would anyone cry foul if he were replaced by another GM? Wouldn't the squeak of a church mouse drown out his most passionate defenders (assuming there are any passionate ones)?

Some of you must read the annual Hockey News Future Watch, an annual prospect ranking put together by the anonymous polling of NHL scouts.

There's an article in this year's edition that doesn't appear to be available online called "Wildly unnoticed."

It's about the best player who failed to crack the magazine's top 75 prospect list: Johan Larsson.

It states Larsson has gone under the radar on a team with perhaps the best prospect list in the league and would "be a top three prospect on almost any other team."

His resume:

Fourteen points in only five games in the world U18 championships in 2010

Captain of the Swedish 2012 world junior team that won gold.

Won a Swedish Elite League Championship, (12/24/36 in 49 games) as a 19-year-old rookie last year.

First line and first power play this year as a rookie in AHL Houston (15/22/37 in 62 games).

Lauded for his leadership and defensive play

Some quotes:

"He's a pit bull of a kid...really powerful, highly competitive and very intelligent. He is one of those guys that is always the coach's favourite because he does all the little things right and manages the puck." — Wild assistant GM Brent Flahr.

"Low-maintenance, high-character; Oh my God he hates to lose a battle." — John Torchetti his coach this year with Houston.

"A leader on and off the ice (who) inspires his teammates with his body language." — former Wild and Team Sweden teammate Jonas Brodin.

"Guys follow his lead and he's done that in only 40 games." — Torchetti again.

Good read if you can find it. Seems like the type of character the Sabres need.

(Also interesting to note that with Larsson and McCabe the Sabres now have the last two WJC gold medal captains. Hodgson was alternate on the 2009 team).

I'll simply say this: He's had 16 years and hasn't won a championship. Time to move on.
