Just got in. I like the deal. 2 young prospects and a 1st and 2nd. I'm sure Regier took the best offer out there so whats there to complain about ?

I think most of the complaints were before we knew for sure about the picks. Value is solid now, so any residual complaints are about what appears to be the start of a long-term rebuild.

Thye could do it if they don't resign Bouchard and Cullen. If the cap goes up, they might even be able to afford more than two players on defense.

I suppose it's possible, not sure how wise it is given the defense. Also Backstrom is in line for an extension unless they let him walk. Backstrom+Vanek+Pominville would eat up close to $20 million in cap space most likely.

Darcy brought the players in to be able to play at a high level or develop into a high level. And brought the coaches in and kept them to coach, and we got worse. I stuck up for him quite some time. But it just didn't work, and he needs to go.

I doubt he will at this point.

Heatly is $7.5 off the books

It's doable, but it may end up leaving them with a Flyers-like blue line--not sure how wise it would be. It may be a moot point though, since I think Vanek gets traded and signs elsewhere.

I wanted to thank Jason for his years of great play. He was a great character player for the Sabres who brought it consistently and gave Buffalo fans his money's worth. I personally loved his boooooming shot and his slick passes...he was a complete skilled player and was a good partner with Vanek, who I'm sure will start to feel like the last of the Mohicans. Pure class all the way Jason and I hope you get your name inscribed on the cup this year. And for those who were derragatory towards Pomers, calling him Pominstein and other names, you're a sorry lot.

I hope the Wild fades down the stretch to miss the playoffs and we get the # 1 pick overall from the lottery with the pick we got from them.

I'm borderline on this trade. Part of me is great, picked up a couple of prospects and got another number 1. Future could be scary good. Another part of me is dang, we will now lose Miller, think Vanek will stay, and the next few seasons will be brutal. Also, cap space has been created, but what upcoming legit UFA would want to come to Buffalo right now? Only way the Sabres can bring in a good veteran is by a trade this summer. Just my thoughts. Oh, and fire Darcy.

I see your point but the last few haven't been great, either. Something had to be done and vets that were not going to re-signed have to go.

Would be a lot of irony there.. The wild win the cup with the Sabres core....perfect......

It's interesting to remember that the first chance Vanek had to leave the Sabres he signed an offer sheet with the Oilers. He didn't re-sign with the Sabres, he was forced to stay a Sabre. Now that the Sabres are "rebuilding" I have little doubt that Vanek will be gone at the end of his contract. He seems like a smart guy, I doubt he wants to waste the rest of his career.

Darcy's biggest failure was leaving this team without a leadership core after Drury, Briere, McKee and Grier left. Perhaps you can throw Soupy and Dumont and Lydman in the mix to a lesser degree. NO ONE has filled that void. In the aftermath, we remained a smurfy (small) team with more finesse than grit. The kind of team Lindy had to beg to "play out of character" (i.e., "make sacrifices, block shots, play with more grit) because that's the style you HAVE TO PLAY in the playoffs.

What were we left with? Connolly, Pomminstein, Vanek, Roy, Afinogenov, Ennis, Gerbe... go on down the line. Generally talented finesse players, but primarily stick checkers. Aside from Vanek, not one of them was willing to go to the dirty areas to make a play. They were complimentary to the leaders who actually WERE WILLING to do it. Once the TRUE core was gone, the Sabres were exposed (as the Lucic hit resoundingly demonstrated).

I love the stockpiling of draft picks as we dismantle the spineless remnants of this team. I cringe at the thought Darcy will still be in place to make selections with those picks.

Yes, that's right. Great point. I hate your point, but it's correct.

I assume he signed the offer sheet because their was a lesser amount on the table. I agree that at some point in ones career you have to start thinking about a legacy.. A terrible waste of talent and bad decision making over that eight year period ..If you were my Gm we would have had two cups..

Or maybe he was forcing the Sabres hand for as much as he could get because of the corner the Sabres were backed into after losing Drury and Briere.

Thank you Jason, you played well for your team. Great guy, good player, just not a great representative or result as the captain.

I agree 100 % with SDS's summary. It wasn't working and it was time.

I never saw him stand up for any of his team mates when they were cheap shot'ed or abused. To me this is the best way they could make a change of captain. If they stripped him of it on the team it just wouldn't make for a good locker room.

I also don't think this is an automatic 3+ year rebuild with no more Miller or Vanek. I think some other teams will need to trade a good high salary player to balance their cap and picks and prospects will be the currency of choice.

As much as I do not want Darcy to be the person picking the players that will shape the personailty and core of of this team going forward I do have to say I think he did good here at the deadline except he still did not cure the Staff infection.

Pomminstein was good at everything except what they desperately needed from him this season - leadership

sad to see him go but once his captaincy failed so spectacularly he pretty much had to be dealt

A smart hockey organ-EYE-zation would have recognized his shortcomings in the area of leadership and not put him in that position. The Sabres failed him in that regard IMO.

Good point.

As we were lead to believe that was Ruff's choice and Darcy choose Ruff and so it must end. Please trade Darcy in the off season.

I see Ennis go to the dirty areas every game without fail. He drives to the front of the net against bigger opponents at every opportunity. Just sayin

Gerbe certainly gets his nose dirty.
