Maybe instead of performance you base additional return on the ability of the Stars to sign Vanek. If the Stars sign Vanek, have that second rounder turn into their #1 pick last season Radek Faksa, a big center out of the Czech Republic.

I do not disagree that Vanek should get the Sabres a nice return, specific to trade with Dallas and the #10 pick, the value just isn't there for Dallas. Their position is closer to Buffalo's than a contender.

There are possible destinations that make sense that can garner a top pick return. Philly at #11, NJ at #9 and Edmonton at #7 could view Vanek as a missing piece. Imagine a NJ power play with Vanek and Kovy?

1st, I really liked Faksa last season and wanted him.

2nd, I think Edmonton to NJD or Edmonton makes a ton of sense but I am not sure they will pull the trigger on such a deal.

If I were a betting man my money would be on the Devils for a Vanek deal. They have plenty of cap space and prospects the Sabres should be interested in. They need a LW to replace Elias and may be facing Martin Brodeur's swan song. The Devils would have made the playoffs if Kovalchuk didn't get injured. This is a team that can see Vanek as that final piece.

Holy Off Topic Batman!

Yeah, this probably belongs in the other thread.

Yeah, this probably belongs in the other thread.

I think it fits in. If the Sabres are serious about rebuilding (and I'm still not sure they are), they're going to trade Miller and Vanek at the draft. Adding another 1st round pick between #8 and #16 would be huge (consider how much the talent drops between those two slots), and finding any way to move up would be huge too. Unfortunately, I suspect Regier will be more focused on "winning" a trade than doing what needs to be done. What else is new?

Probably, sometimes you just have to let a conversation take it's natural course without the restraints of being "on-topic." It's how the most interesting conversations are born.

Bob McKenzie's 2013 draft rankings: http://www.tsn.ca/dr...eature/?id=9420

The Video is up: http://video.tsn.ca/...400#main/latest

Bob McKenzie laying out my worst case scenario. My top 7 prospects all gone by 8, and then the best 14 or 15 guys are gone by 16.

Basically our top pick comes down to if Carolina, Calgary, or Edmonton decides they like a defenseman (Nurse?) more than Lindholm, Nichushkin, or Monahan. Otherwise we're taking Nurse or Ristolainen I guess.

Well Carolina will most likely take Nichushkin. Calgary will take Monahan because they won't want to wait the year for Lindholm. Edmonton needs defense and is bluffing if they say otherwise. They have said they are not buying out ppl so I think they take Nurse. In this way Lindholm falls to us.

You can't be too upset, I mean, you did predict this exact scenario probably as far back as February :P

Regarding the Vanek discussion. If you are willing to take on a 7m winger, won't you first check with Iginla before you trade away a valuable commodity for Vanek?

All due respect to Jerome Iginla, at 35 he is not the player Vanek is at 29.

I think Edmonton goes D, but if they don't I'd be fine with Nurse or Ristoainen.

I thought it was interesting that Darcy let on during his discussion on Hockey Hotline that he felt there were 6 elite players in this years draft, I wonder who he feels that 6th guy is.

My guess is either Lindholm or Nurse.

One will be whoever we get at 8.

Doesn't matter....every team will say, he's the guy we targeted.

Again a 29 yr old top of the NHL winger is worth more to just about everyone than what you are suggesting.

Maybe. Depends on the partner.

I completely agree that Vanek to Dallas does not make sense. However a #10 pick plus other stuff for Vanek would be my guess at the going rate.

I don't think there is a going rate. Depends on with whom you're trading.

Just heard on WGR that the Avs have called a 2 PM presser to announce who they'll take at #1.

That's just annoying.

Kind of ruins the anticipation of Sunday draft day excitement.

White just corrected himself on Twitter. Presser is MONDAY after the draft.

Jeremy White@JeremyWGR 22m

And there ya go. “@adater: Avs will have 2 p.m. press conference Monday at Pepsi Center to introduce top pick”

I've been upset about this exact scenario since as far back as February. :(
