What?

@NHLbyMatty Boychuk seems like a no brainer trade target for Oil. Tough, great shot, pedigree, local. Thoughts?

I'm not sure what this has to do with who the Sabres might select in the draft.

It's a quote from a comment from the link YOU provided. What's your point? I guess I'll stop checking out the links you provide.

The link I provided has a quote about where the Stafford to Edmonton trade talks have come from which have sparked talk about the Sabres potentially acquiring 7 to select a player in the draft. Your quote pertains to two teams not named the Sabres and would've been fitting in maybe the Playoffs thread or just around the NHL.

I was just making a note that it's off topic.

Here's my plot to get the #1

Miller(25%) & Stafford for 7 and Hemsky + a prospect.

16 for 11 and Bryz's buyout (Swap 2nds too If need be.) (Flyers need their 2nd buyout for Pronger who if he retires could take a chunk out of their capspace for years to come.)

7,8,11 for #1

Sign Iginla

Vanek - Hodgson - Iginla

Ennis - MacKinnon - Armia

Ott - Grigs - Leino

Foligno - Girgs - Kaleta/Scott/Hemsky

That Top 6 would have the potential to rock the competition in theory.

That is a lineup that certainly guarantees a lottery pick next season.

Hemsky is a good pickup only if the Sabres plan to move him in another deal. I know Pegula has a lot of money, but $5 mil for a guy who has seen 20 goals in five seasons is a huge waste of money.

He's only meant as a salary dump.

Flyers can't buyout Pronger. He's injured. You can't buyout players if they haven't been medically cleared to play.

That makes sense. Overall it's an interesting idea. I think the prospect might be asking a bit much since Miller is likely there for only one year. Possibly make the "prospect" conditional upon Miller signing an extension.

Meszaros is scheduled to make $4 mil and does not have the NMC or NTC protection. I can see him moved easily to make move.

If Pronger retires, what type of cap relief would the Flyers get? Is it 100%?

0%. He's on a 35+ contract, so he's on the books no matter what. In fact, him being injured and on LTIR us literally the only way his contract wouldn't count against the cap.

Is there any reason to think Pronger will not remain on IR until his contract runs out?

Or will the league eventually clear him to play, closing the loophole?

Option A. I'd be completely shocked if he's ever cleared to play.

So what checks are in place to prevent other teams from "retiring" players to IR to save cap space?

They have to be injured - it really annoys me that Pronger is injured and allows the flyers to keep him there till he is 43, for him to then annonce his retirement

Pronger is dealing with post-concussion, is he not? Who's to say he won't be recovered next year?

More to the point, is anyone other than the Flyers actually checking?

I don't know man. A guy like Pronger doesn't declare his career over unless he knows it is. He's messed up bad.

I've listened to and looked at most of the 1st round guys now and Horvat and Lazar are the 2 who stand out in the mental department, and have solid physical attributes besides. Domi is ok but small and topheavy. Monahan is interesting....like the body...ok but a little "sleepy" and introverted.

Probably the most inacurate statement in this thread. Sean Monahan is considered a leader by everyone on his team and everyone in Juniors. I have read so much about how he leads by example and is vocal in the locker room I am blue in the face about it.

And with the 8th pick, the Buffalo Sabres pick Zachary Fucale!

Is it easier to imagine now?

No, because it would be one of the worst blunders in Sabres history and something that IMPO would put darcy in the "FIRE NOW" category permanently. You dont draft a ###### goaltender in the top 10. If the Sabres are that stupid considering how many goalie propsects they have not to mention Miller still on the team and under contract than dear god we will never win a cup, ever.

FUCALE @ 8 IS THE WORST POSSIBLE IDEA AND SCENARIO.

What if the Sabres drafted Lindholm and Horvat. They would have a pair of hard working Selke candidates. These are the type of tenacious players championships are built around.

Yes, make this happen and dear god yes.

I think they explicitly said that they would take a forward or defenseman at #8 at that goofy press conference they had this week.

They'll probably pick him at #16, which would still be stupid because they don't know what Enroth or Hackett can do (this would be the year to find out) and because you can find good goalies in the later rounds.

I would classify him in the Cody Hodgson camp.

If you aren't used to hearing the Sabre monotone cadence by now......it's pretty easy to identify. He's 18 and has a tad more pep. I like his build a lot. I listen to Lazar talk and I see can't miss. The kid probably will be a coach someday. He (Monahan) had 2 months to prep and coach himself up for the combine because he was on a crappy team. If you see some earlier interviews.....pretty so-so. No big whoop.

Lazar will almost definitely be there at #16 if the Sabres want him.

If the Sabres are never going to be able to land a generational talent like Sydney Crosby, I don't think it'd be a bad strategy to build an entire team of super gritty, hard-working guys like Girgensons and then sprinkle in some skill like Grigorenko and Armia. That's basically what we did in the late 90s and early 2000s, and what Boston is doing now. Maybe Lazar fits that mold?

I am encouraged that they took Girgensons last year, traded for Ott, and at least Pegula is saying he wants hard workers. What I like about Lazar and Horvat is that you really can't go wrong. Hope they play center, but you probably have a gritty 2nd and 3rd line winger longterm at worst. I am not opposed to "suffering" for a few years if the Sabres can actually identify the leaders and grit with skill.

One thing Darcy has done well over the years is find puckmoving defensemen. If you go with bluechip, tough forwards early....and play your strength to find gems on defense in the 2nd on....you may actually have a good team in 3-4 years that can be steady for a decade. Again....that's a lot to trust Darcy with given he seemingly undervalues the motor needed in the playoffs.
