Or we could just go crazy... Trade #8/#52 for #6 Trade #11/2nd next year for #7 (Make it conditional, our best #2 next yr is yours)

Draft:

Monahan #6

Lindholm #7

Lazar/Rychel/Erne #14

You make the move with players in mind for those later picks. It comes down to the value you assign to this years prospects. IMO, there is enough value later in the 1st round and in the second round that makes the #8 pick expendable for the right price. I understand the allure of the top portion of the draft. I would be happy if the Sabres stay pat and draft #8 and #16 if the return for trading is not there. Two 1st and a top ten 2nd is a good return. Either direction is fine with me. Just stay away from bundling assets to move up.

X nailed it.

I think this is a strong draft. There looks to be a lot of NHL players in this draft well into the 2nd round. I'm not so sure there are a lot of Top 3, first pairing players. But there are a lot of NHL players.

Trading down might be tempting if Devine thinks they missed out on top 3 or first pairing players.

And Liger finished it off.

Which at 8 they wont. The Magnificent 7 should all be top guys. Than you have Nurse/Ristolainen as top pairing guys sitting there. They won't be there after 10 (Unless ristolainen falls a bit because of his foreigness).

i can see us move grigorenko in such a deal.

There was a Colorado reporter on WGR last week who pretty much blew this idea off. If Colorado is going to move they likely to stay within the top three. His thoughts were the Av's may bluff at trading the #1 pick forcing Florida to give up something to move up to #1. The idea being that Florida wants MacKinnon and would be concerned about someone moving into the #1 slot and taking him.

I think that's what they're doing, they want Jones and are trying to gain extra picks while still getting their guy.

Yea I have been reading more on the Colorado thing and they are definitely blowing smoke trying to deal. I too think they want to move back to Florida's pick because they will take MacKinnon at 1 but really want Jones. Should be an exciting draft either way.

Did a prospect profile on Barkov: http://sabresoftomor...ospect-profile/

Couple interesting tidbits in there about SM-liiga.

Barkov is my second favorite player in this draft when including the cost it would take to acquire the selection to get him.

So is MacKinnon your first?

If I had to rank players I legitimately thought we could get... Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan, Ristolainen

Also in your article you say we have "Cody Hodgson, Tyler Ennis, Mikhail Grigorenko and Johan Larsson all manning the middle, it seems like Buffalo could find a number one center out of that. Unfortunately, the only one on that list with a remotely physical game is Johan Larsson." I would like to point out you forgot Zemgus Girgensons who is also physical and probably higher on the depth chart than Larsson.

Bakes makes it seem like Santini and Risto are very likely Sabre picks at 16 and 8.

While I think that's good value, I would be bummed if we failed to pick a top 6 forward.

so

Another article about Calgary shopping all their picks for #1

http://www.cbc.ca/sp...-nhl-draft.html

Interestingly it seems it would require a NHL ready player or 2... so I am guess Vanek, 8, 16 would probably start a conversation.

is sekera and picks good enough to get the 5th pick? i consider him top 4 D and he has a good contract. so why not sekera, 16 and our first 2nd rounder? then we get #5 and #8. or is this not worth it to you guys/gals?

i would then hope to get nishikishkinski and lindholm(no E) i would be freaking ecstatic

not sure if this should go in this thread, but has anyone heard of vanek/miller contract talks? or is it completely quiet? is it safe to assume that they are gone come draft day?

I'd do that in a heartbeat but I doubt Carolina would ever go for that.

It fits what Carolina needs in terms of player and contract, and Sekera continues to be underrated, but I would tend to agree.

They would really have think the drop between 5 and 16 is relatively narrow.

On a related note, our defensive depth isn't what it used to be. Trading Myers and Sekera (as seems to be popular) would leave us in a pretty big hole.

true it would leave us pretty tight on the back end. im to a point where i want young forwards with skill and grit through the draft and then spending our free agency money on D. i would consider it less of a gamble i guess to get quality D UFAs over quality O. id find it hard to imagine a team putting together a better package than that. or i guess i just cant figure out what would be better and still worth it for a team.

Use the #5 to get your impact forward and the #8 on one of those blue chip D-men.

I can't see Carolina going for this trade, but I'd seriously consider the deal if I were Sabres GM.

If we're talking to Carolina about #5, I wonder if we could make Myers the centerpiece of that deal. Or if his stock has already fallen too far in the past couple seasons.

And like you said, #5 for the impact forward and #8 for the blue chip defenseman.

No way that's enough for 5. I think Carolina would consider Sekera and 8.

I think you could do Myers and the two seconds maybe.

Lindholm and Ristolainen would be great picks at 5/8

Man, Myers is such an enigma. He shouldn't even be in the conversation really. But he's managed to "earn" his way into the conversation. That kid still has so much top end. You'd think it would be a no-brainer to keep him out of the talk for a draft pick, but man, I can't say that I'd be more disappointed losing Myers or Sekera. Sekera doesn't have the top end but at least he managed to develop and become a trustworthy player. Myers, we still don't know what we have.

My ideas:

Trade the 16th & 38th to Philly for Bryz (buyout), 11th , and 41st. (We pay for Bryz's buyout and move down 3 picks in the 2nd round to move up 5 in the 1st)

Trade Vanek(35%), Miller(40%), and the 53rd to Edm for Jordan Eberle & and the 58th. (Vet Winger and Goalie to help them become a true contender for 1 of their 3 young wingers)

Trade Stafford(25%)& 69th to Nashville for the 64th, 99th, and a 2nd rounder next year. (Stafford can still score enough to help Nashville, and we get a few picks)

Trade Myers, 41st, and a 3rd rounder next year to Edmonton for their 7th. (Top D-Man potential player and 2 picks for a new 1st rounder)

Trade Gerbe somewhere for a 3rd & 6th rounder next year.

In the end we have

7th, 8th, 11th, 58th, 64th, 99th, 129th, 130th, 144th, 159th, 189th

3 1sts

1 2nd

1 3rd

1 4th

3 5th

1 6th

1 7th

Next year we would have:

1 1st

4 2nds

1 3rd

0 4th

1 5th

2 6th

1 7th

I can't do it. From where I sit, Myers is not tradable,

He just has too much upside to give up for anything other than a young impact player.

And he has too many question marks for another team to pay that price.
