After the Flyers made the Lindros deal, their team was horrid for a few years before they bounced back...still looking for a return to glory with a parade. Cautionary tale?

The problem with these kinds of deals is they're so few and far between it's tough to get a general sense of the right thing to do. For instance, I don't think the Canucks feel bad about giving up what they did to secure the Sedins, even though it took several years for the move to really pay off.

An interesting thought that hasn't been discussed is trading down.

Would you trade out of 8 for Columbus' 19 and 27..

Normally I wouldn't make that deal.... but 16, 19, 27, 38, 52 could be a heck of a haul this year with the talent out there.

I'm not recommending it - I'm just intrigued by the possibility especially if the best guy on the board at 8 isn't a one of the top 6 forwards.

Not a chance. I don't think I could hang up the phone fast enough. Even though it's a deep draft I'm still not in favor of dropping down a tier in talent for two lesser talents. I'd be much more inclined to trade out of 16 back to the early 20s and grab another 2nd round pick. But with #8, I'm either trading up or drafting there.

I certainly wouldn't trade down from #8

I'd personally trade our entire draft, 2 2nds from next year , Miller, Stafford, Gerbe, and Grigs to figure out a way to get the 1st and 3rd pick. I would love to have both Drouin and MacKinnon

I want to trade down if a top forward isn't available at 8, but no more than 4 or 5 spots because I see a drop-off at 14.

I would happily trade down at 16, however; 16 and 38 for 19 and 27 sounds just great; 16 and 52 for 22 and 28 would be great too.

I'll say one thing for the Sabres, their recent trades and statements have been great ammunition for us compulsive speculators.

Id consider it if we're on the clock and all the top kids we had targeted are off the board.

Nope. They are going Pittsburgh with this. Top 3 pick this year with another top pick next year. Whether it be on their own or using assets to get there - this is a two year draft plan and they are figuring on a Crosby/Malkin style plan.

i agree. ted black had said something similar to this a long time ago. about the benefits of bottoming out and starting with those quality picks. i figured that was the goal mid season and definitely when they traded pommer

Again, it's been one SCF for Vancouver with the window closing......has it really paid off?

And being the Sabres, they couldn't even do that right.

Yep....bottom out so you don't have to pay for any high pick....just go ahead and embrace suckitude for the ultimate payoff with no ransom to pay.

Depends what you consider worth it. Is winning the Cup the sole measure of a move being worth it? If so, we may as well have GMs blindly throwing darts at a dartboard to determine what types of moves to make. In my personal view, the best approach to winning a Cup is to build a team which can be kept together for an extended amount of time, therefore maximizing the chances that the "bounces" go your way in one of those years of relevance. Given that there's simply no guarantee any string of moves can win you a Cup, I think staying in the conversation for as long as possible is the best way to go about it. From that perspective, the 'Nucks have had a pretty good run of relevance and came damn close to bringing it all home. Yes, I'd say it paid off.

I think it has. I haven't gone and checked into how all of the trades worked out in the end but I don't think Van gets to the SCF without those trades. The goal is winning right? Van gave it their best shot. They have 0% chance of winning if they don't get to the SCF. They got to play the last game of the season.

Not saying to avoid being bold with a similar move, just throwing out the other side for full consideration. Lots of ways to approach building a winner....with the right decision making team in place of course said Captain Obvious.

I want to know why this draft is on Sunday? Would have loved to have had primetime BBq set for Friday or Saturday ....

I definitely won't be getting blasted on well vodka this year...

Gerbe? All your credibility is lost upon those 5 letters, although you really had none to begin with.

It's not as if you'll be working on Monday. #knowingtoomuchinfo

Haha I'm trying to see if they'll let me come in and push a broom around or something. Two weeks without hours hurts.

It sucks but it's the nature of the manufacturing beast. Eventually you'll cherish the time off.

Don't know how much weight you guys have been giving the salary cap squeeze and the ability to take on contracts, but that is certainly a potential sweetener in draft day trades.

We're in good shape, $15.7 million in space, 17 guys under contract, and an owner willing to buy out players.

Philly and Tampa are in awful shape and despite what others have been saying, could still be prime trade partners.

The Avs have everyone under contract and $10 million in space and are in a great position to really improve their team.

Worth checking out because it will have a huge effect on what happens on June 30 and the weeks to follow.

CREAM get the money!

I'm pretty pumped for this draft. Hoping to see a lot of action from the sabres on or before draft day. I think at this point it may be a letdown to a lot of us if the team can't move up in the first round.

We need scoring wingers are at 3 we probably get Drouin. This does give us more skill but no more grit. To get there I think you have to take on Lecavalier and give them 8. What else you need to toss in is anyones guess. I still like trading with Nashville.

If I am the Avs I make 2 trades. go from 1st to 3rd and get an extra 2nd plus a prospect. You could probably get more i am sure but from the minimal side of things... Then trade 3rd for something 6-8 which would include a 2nd the 1st rounder and another prospect. Effectively you get 2 2nd rounders, 2 prospects and you still draft in the top 8. Also I would ask for decent prospects like a teams 1st or 2nd best.

So if Avs traded 3rd with Buffalo they get 8, Grigorenko, 38. Probably would take a little more than that IDK but if I am the Avs I try to make 2 trades

I think any trade we make to move up would be strictly for MacKinnon or Barkov. A true #1 center should be our target.

Here is a snippet of an Avs fans Comments about what he thinks they should do... let me just say I wouldn't do this trade if I were Buffalo...

http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2013/06/12/buffalo-sabres-want-to-trade-for-no-1-pick-will-the-avalanche-be-suckered-into-doing-it/13816/

"The 8th pick would give us a very good defensive prospect, so that would help make up for not getting Jones. For the rest of the deal though I think the focus should be different. I wouldn't do the deal unless we were getting Joel Armia and one of Jake McCabe or Brayden McNabb in addition to someone like Grigorenko or Marcus Foligno. If they did this right, trading the 1st overall pick could set us up for years to come with quality young players."

So to summarize this guy wants us to give up 8, Armia, McCabe/McNabb, and Grigorenko/Foligno... so our top 2 prospects plus 1 of our top defensive prospects, plus 8... that impo is to steep a price to pay and would hurt us much more than MacKinnon would help us.
