I could see this coming right down to the wire. If Devine, et al really think that MacKinnon (or substitute any of the top three) is the one guy they'd make the huge trade for to move up and grab, and he's taken first overall, then they might back off and stand pat for the next couple of picks. According to Devine, picks 4-10 are pretty similar, and we've already got 8. Maybe we'd trade up from 16 into top 10 to double up, but it's possible that if the first pick doesn't swing the right way for the Sabres' interests, we pass on the huge trade.

Colorado has the first overall pick. If we make a deal with them then we can take whoever we rank the highest (it has to be MacKinnon over Jones right?).

Yep. That assumes we don't deal to #2 (unlikely, I guess because Florida sounds like they might be holding their pick?) or lower, and Colorado doesn't deal down to 2-4 or lower before we get to the party.

Based on that Devine GR interview it would be either of those two. I think almost all of us here would prefer MacKinnon over Jones.

Both on the verge of UFA, right?

If so, no way. Miller is a better player than Stastny, who seems to be overrated on this forum.

To me, he's one of those almost first-line centres you are always trying to upgrade, not much different than Derek Roy used to be.

2 years ago I may want Stastny. Not now. I want the Miller trade to bring us young players and picks.

To me I just don't see the top 5 picks getting traded unless you are going to overpay big time. I just don't see us doing that. Plus I have another point. They doubled their scouting department so why throw away 1st round picks, players and/or prospects just for 1 player. I can see them moving Miller and possibly both seconds for another 1st.

Nope. They are going Pittsburgh with this. Top 3 pick this year with another top pick next year. Whether it be on their own or using assets to get there - this is a two year draft plan and they are figuring on a Crosby/Malkin style plan.

Good luck with that. I just don't see them going all in on one player. If this is a deep draft I try to get 3 picks in the top 16. Now if Connor McDavid is in this draft then I go all in.

I say the Sabres are entirely willing to overpay.

Sorry to go PA on you, but Uncle Terry called Darcy into the office and said 'why is Pittsburgh so much better than us?"

"Because they got lucky and drafted Crosby and Malkin."

"Why can't we draft a Crosby and a Malkin?"

"Because you need a top pick in a year where one is available."

"Well, why don't we go get one of those top picks? Remember Darcy, you have to take risks if you want to succeed. It's better to try and fail, than to not try at all. Now go get me a Malkin."

The difference is that Pittsburgh genuinely sucked and didn't have to overpay to get either of them.

Exactly. Not only that but they pretty much told us that in the year end press conference.

Maybe Terry decided that if genuine suckage is the price you have to pay, he was going to get it by gutting the team to overpay for MacKinnon.

Are you saying there's hope we'll suck long enough for a shot at McDavid? Sold! :P

Could be....It would be a mistake to give up future picks if that's the decision. The Flyers tried that in the Lindros deal and all it got them was 1 SCF appearance. Meanwhile, the Quebec/Colorado franchise got a crap load of assets in return (Peter Forsberg included) and went on to win two Cups.

If I'm Terry and I doubled the scouting department there is no reason to mortgage off 3-4 players/picks for 1 player. The whole reason to expand scouting is to find decent players in all countries. Plus you don't want to completely gut the franchise of all players like Philly did with Quebec.

Idk. I am on the fence with it. Part of me says go all in. I don't want to see them sell the ranch but it is not like we have a very expensive ranch. Who exactly on this current roster is untouchable? I don't see many Forsbergs on this team.

After the Flyers made the Lindros deal, their team was horrid for a few years before they bounced back...still looking for a return to glory with a parade. Cautionary tale?

Move both seconds. And Miller and try to get in the top 15. I think u can have 3 solid players. Plus why have a combine if you are trying for just 1-2 players!

An interesting thought that hasn't been discussed is trading down.

Would you trade out of 8 for Columbus' 19 and 27..

Normally I wouldn't make that deal.... but 16, 19, 27, 38, 52 could be a heck of a haul this year with the talent out there.

I'm not recommending it - I'm just intrigued by the possibility especially if the best guy on the board at 8 isn't a one of the top 6 forwards.

No.

The further you slide down the draft the less control you have over who you end up with. As it is we are getting a sort of sloppy 8ths. If what is being said is true, that there is a drop off at 9, then we get the last pick before the drop off. we don't control who we select before that drop. I don't want to be in less control to get an extra pick. And lets face it. players at 19 and 27 are bigger risks than the players at 8.

I'd rather have a low risk, high tools D-man than 2x of higher risk, less tools forward.
