I can be pretty free flowing myself ...but c'mon guys, this is the entry draft thread.

Yeah, sorry, not trying to hijack the thread or anything. I did read some recent posts where the pie-in-the-sky perspective just struck a nerve, sort of like recent national news.

Kevin Devine was just in WGR and here is a general summary.

They would like to move up and he wouldn't say who was their #1.

Has said they have had conversations with Colorado and Patrick Roy.

Indicated that he thinks it is a good idea to have a couple of players of the same nationality to be there for eachother.

Did not seem to think getting a GT was something they would do in the 1st round and indicated he wasn't sure how goaltending would work in Buffalo this year (aka the Miller V. Enroth conundrum).

Seems really high on Barkov but sounded unsure of Nichushkin.

Mentioned that he thought both Western NY kids will get drafted. Noted how Bailey was interesting because he only has 1 yr in juniors versus others who have 2.

Talked about how there is a drop off in talent at 9, 15, and 25.

Also everybody who wants to move up is getting asked for young players.

Indicated that Jones is better than Nurse and Ristolainen but they are not a extreme drop off.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the summary. I will have to have a listen when I get home this evening. I think it's funny he think's there's a drop off at 9, of course he won't say 8 haha. So he has indicated he has had talks with Colorado about #1. I still think it's near impossible but I hope they do whatever they possibly can to get into that 1 spot and take McKinnon. I assumed anyone near the top would also be looking for a young player in return. I would be willing to part with Ennis myself or even Myers to get up there but I hope we don't trade Hodgson.

He also said Grigo made nice strides and seemed fairly happy with how he went

He seemed happier with the larger strides Girgs made

Grigo may have to be "sacrificed" as part of a package in a potential trade-up to get to the #1 slot.

Yeah, I had the same thought. Especially as Roy is now the coach/half GM

I think without a doubt he would be part of the deal. Makes sense because I am assuming McKinnon is the guy. With him and Hodgson 1/2 and Girgs at 3/4 how much are you giving up? My guess is Myers/Grigo/and at least 1 second gets it done. Not sure if I give up much more than that.

My gut says somehow we are coming out of this with either McKinnon at 1 or Barkov at 4.

If Myers goes we pick up Risto or Nurse at 8. I do not make the deal unless I keep 8.

Ya I forgot about the Roy Grigo connection. I still think this takes the 8 pick tho. So you wouldn't do Grigo, Myers and 8 for 1? I would have to think long and hard about it but I would certainly consider it. Look at the talent you get with McKinnon. Not just in the regular season but he had an unreal playoff and scores a bloody hat trick in the Memorial Cup final game. A clutch, high end #1 centre is what this team has been missing for years. I'm one of the guys who still believe Myers will turn his career around and I'm still willing to probably make that deal. Then use atleast one of our seconds to try and move the 16 pick up and get one of the second teir Dmen.

Rather than more speculation on what it would take to move up, I think we could have a lot more fun translating this from scout-speak to what it really means ;)

If I could trade Myers in some package and get MacKinnon and still get Ristolainen as well, I do it.

No I wouldn't do that for #1. I would do Grigs, Myers and 38 or maybe could be talked into 16 if you are really a sweat talker but giving up 2 players that already are in the NHL and are Young and our 8th pick just seems a little much even for MacKinnon. I still think Grigs pans out.

He talked to Roy and it will take a boatload to move up. He really wants to draft Barkov to play with Armia. Some point in this draft he wants to draft another Russian but not Nichushkin. He likes Nurse but would be happy with Ristolainen. I think he is more focused on offense over defense. He didn't mention Pulock at all and well this could be a smokescreen I think hell will freeze over before we take him at 8 like some drafts have predicted. He thinks Ryan Miller will be traded."

Not 8. Maybe 16 but I would need to have Miller or Vanek get me back into the top 10. This draft is too good to not get as many players as you can.

Just to be clear ...

... it's Mac, not McKinnon.

Them's fightin' words around my parts .......... :P

My autospell likes Mc better. Proof reading goes out the window when driving. I know bad habit.

i was just reading how burke got the sedins in 99..i forgot how the trades actually went down.

i wonder if something like myers, 16th and our 2nd 2nd would be enough? i really do want to keep the #8 if at all possible. and if we are giving it away, then i definitely do not want to give up the farm. either way i am excited to see how this shakes out. i am confident that darcy will move up, and i think that we will be amazed at what little it takes to do so. i do want to keep grigs. the guy is going to be a real talent. and dont forget that he was ranked in the top 3 last year and just happened to fall to us. i would almost rather stay in our spots and draft lindholme and another forward and keep all of our prospects then over pay for one player.

this. i really really hope this happens. i would almost even like to snag a bunch of 1st rounders next year to package some for 1st overall then. obviously

Picking first overall next year may not require us to do much packaging.

So for the 3rd or possibly 4th round I give you Taylor Cammarata. Most of you would hate this but this kid has elite scoring potential and some amazing skating and stickhandling skills. I'm not telling you the catch. He is going to U of Minn next year and had 93pts in 59 USHL games this past season.

With that post I am going to post my first 3 rounds of the Sabres draft:

8) Rasmus Ristolainen (D)

16) Alenxander Wennberg ©

38) Justin Bailey (RW)

52) Laurent Dauphin (C/LW)

69) Taylor Cammarata (C/LW

Or we trade 16 and stuff to end up at 4 and take Barkov
