Horrible idea. Talk about setting up a player for failure. Nothing about Grigs' game says winger.

Agreed. Grigs and Hodgson are the two guys who I don't think have any position versatility. They're going to be top-6 centers or they're not going to be useful.

Hodgson can play wing. I'm sure Grigo could too. But why would you want them there?

Just like Leino can play center. IMO they'd be that misused as wingers. If I remember correctly, Van even put Hodgson at wing for a stretch and he was abysmal.

Moving a kid to the wall after 20 NHL games...he might not have looked too good at anything.

They are both natural centers IMO. But I wouldn't be afraid to play either player on the wall, perhaps in a double shift situation or something, I just can't think of an advantage at the moment.

Moving Ennis for Barkov makes a lot more sense than moving Grigs. Potential #1 centers aren't something the Sabres can afford to deal away at this point. I wouldn't move Ennis + 8, but I would move Ennis + 10-12 for 4. If the Sabres could get Barkov at 4 and Lindholm/Monahan at 8 then we'd be on our way to a Pitts-like forward core.

Maybe it makes more sense for us, but why would it make more sense for the Preds?

Proven young top 6 talent still on cheap contract with RFA status for 1-1.5 teirs of talent. Doesn't seem too far off to me. Obviously Ennis and 8 is a lot more realistic, but why be realistic so many weeks from the draft when the outlook is so dreary?

I wrote a piece about NHL draft selection bias that I put up on yahoo.

The skinny: Players born Jan, Feb, Mar are drafted twice as often. Players born Oct, Nov, Dec play 50% more games per player. Yahoo made my chart too small, so I'll attach it here. I'll probably write a part 2 looking at factors other than birthdate.

Interesting.

One small mistake: Nr 5 are the Carolina Hurricanes.

I'm not sure what the point is? This is the definition of a spurious correlation.

Crapola, and too late to fix, I get my football and hockey confused. Thanks,

Interesting tweets from Bob McKenzie:

@TSNBobMcKenzie

Me thinks I hate it when guys start tweets with "me thinks" but that said, me thinks there's going to be lots of NHL news-action coming up.

Now that we are down to 3 teams left, soon to be 2, and Cup final starting Wed or Sat, teams are ramping up trade talk/moves.

For example, EDM's No. 7 overall pick, as well as players, are available. While it's possible EDM drafts at 7, my guess is it gets dealt.

It's not carved in stone, but in spite of what has been said in past, I expect PHI is likely to use compliance buyout on Ilya Bryzgalov.

Also, PHI is in market for D and may be willing to move one of their young centres - B Schenn or Couturier - for the right deal.

I would be willing to give up our #8 slot for young guys already in another teams system. What is everyone elses thoughts?

On a personal note I haven't posted on here in a couple of weeks as we had the birth of our first child on May 25th. Our boy Brayden was born healthy and we will do our best to ensure he is a die hard Sabres fan and my Leaf supporting family doesn't get to him first!

Congrats to you.

True - the second mistake was not letting him play through the growing pains.

Hard to blame Grigo for his handling. I'd rather keep Grigo than add picks to him for a package for Barkov.

They should give Grigorenko at least a full year in Rochester.

I would easily offer up Ehrhoff in a deal for Courturier.

they can't put him in Rochester next season. Like last season, it is Buffalo or Quebec. He'll be in Buffalo next year unless he's dealt.

If Edmonton wants to trade that #7 overall pick, why not us?

We get the #7 pick for #16 and ???. That way we'd be guaranteed one of the Magnificent Seven and one of Ristolainen/Nurse/Zadarov at #8. We'd be able to address a couple big needs and I don't think it'd be impossible to do if we're using #16 to move up.

My guess is Edmonton is ready to win now and wants established players to fill specific needs, not our #16 pick. I'm thinking they would be looking for Sekera and Foligno or Ott.

Grigorenko can't play in Rochester until 2014-15 (aside from small 5-10 game spurts at the end of his junior/Sabres seasons).

Miller, Vanek, Myers for Eberle a prospect and 7.

See Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point" for a thorough discussion. Form your own opinion, thereafter.

If you had read the piece, it's in Outliers, not the Tipping Point, and Gladwell is just talking about the number of players, he doesn't get into the relationship between the draft and the date of birth.

I feel like we should sticky this, as it seems every time Grigs' name comes up, somebody suggests Rochester.
