well then if Nichushkin is available at 8 and the other guys are gone, I think he is who we should take. My main concern outside of the Russian thing would be his conditioning for a 82 game season. I could see this kid starting strong next year than tailing off as the season grinds on. Hard to predict this guy, he looks good but sometimes looks are deceiving

I think I should add something doesn't feel right for me with Nichushkin and I would rather we draft 1 of the other players.

The fact that Tampa's director of scouting compared him to Malkin and Ovechkin doesn't sound just a little overreaching?

I am overreaching in saying I am not sure about taking him because I don't know if he is all he is cracked up to be or that Tampa's scouting director is overreaching?

Also I think Ovechkin and Malkin play completely games/styles so comparing him to them doesn't make a lot of sense. I do see Ovechkin in the way he does stuff but could just be the fact they are both wingers.

He'll be gone by 8, so don't spend too much time agonizing over what you think is wrong with him ;)

Tampa's scouting director really likes Jones. That is why he somewhat downplayed Jones and raved about Druin and nikushkin. I can't see a scouting director tipping his hand that obviously. If so, yzerman may have a word or two with him.

No--not you overreaching, the Tampa guy. You said that something didn't feel right and I'm (possibly) identifying it.

got ya, you see an issue with saying he plays like 2 completely dif guys as well. I guess maybe he meant they are all Russian?

Okay so let us suppose that the Russian reports are true and Valeri Nichushkin will sign and play in North America come September. Do people have any thoughts on him? Does he fit? What about reports of work ethic issues? Bottom line is if say Nichushkin and one of the other magnificent 7 are available at 8, which do you take? What if Lindholm and Nichushkin fall to us, should we take a sure thing with less upside or a boomer with a higher bust upside?

I am really warming up to one of these 3 defenseman at 8 (Nurse, Ristolainen or Zadorov). If I were Buffalo, I would stick with their 2 picks in the first because there is going to be massive talent at each spot.

Don't think there's a prayer Nichushkin or Lindolm just fall to us, but ya never know. Playing along, I'd take Nichushkin all day. If what I've read about his talent level is accurate (that he should be mentioned in the same breath as the big-3/4) then I just think it's too much raw ability to pass up, since that would mean he's clearly a tier ahead of Lindolm. The Sabres have a hole at center, yes...but they also have a massive hole at RW. Normally in this situation I'd play the positional value card and take the center...but if Nichushkin is truly a tier of talent above Lindolm, I don't think the positional card makes as much sense in that case.

I want smart, talented, competitive players who will pay the price.

Nichushkin may be more gifted, but Lindholm ticks all the boxes.

I take Lindholm.

I expect the high end forward talent will be gone when we step up to the plate. Given that, I am all for drafting a guy like Nurse. He seems to have the attitude and mindset that we all have been clamoring for. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with selecting the 2nd best defenseman instead of the 8th best forward.

Right now I expect that the only way we are going to end up with near elite level talent at the draft is to have one that plays D slip to us. I am OK with that.

If Darcy can't trade up to get us that Offensive talent he has failed to some degree. However if he doesn't I would take Ristolainen but that's my opinion and I like Nurse too.

side note Chris Baker will be on SHH and will discuss prospects and a little draft talk from what I understand from these two goofballs

If those three are in the same tier or essentially equal on the Sabres board, moving down three or four spots and still grabbing one of them while picking up an extra top 40 pick in the process would be a good thing too. If Nurse is clearly the guy above the other two then I agree you stand pat and take him at 8.

I can't let go of my anti Euro bias. The last two seasons only a quarter of the top 40 scorers in the league were not born in North America.

I guess my follow up question would be: what percentage of the league's forwards are European? If it's around a quarter, then no big deal.

Agree 100%. This franchise needs players across the board. Forwards, defensemen and even goalies. It would be a huge error to fixate on "scoring."
