Nashville has an internal cap (or at least it would appear they do) I doubt they want Vanek for 1yr.

Florida is not close enough and will not move their pick. Vanek or Miller is to expensive for them.

Tampa Bay could in theory use him but the top 3 are just to good to pass on any of them. Also I think they would rather draft Drouin/MacKinnon/Jones than trade Lecavalier

Colorado wouldn't trade if we gave them Miller and Vanek, they also appear to have an internal cap.

Carolina, now here is a team that could trade. They are just outside the big 4, they are better than they were last year, they could use a winger outside of Skinner and Semin, however Carolina will have cap issues next season so that is something important to consider.

Calgary is a disaster so who can predict what that Titanic will do not that it is painfully aware it hit the IDIOT GM Iceberg

Edmonton has a lot of forwards that are all extremely young. Thomas Vanek would be a valuable addition but unless they think they can resign him... I don't think it happens.

Just read the write up, Makorov out played Fucale... which is why you don't draft a goalie in the first round... or you might get Fucaled... :P

Don't tell Sabres Fan In NS this... but Makorov is good, really good.

So, from the mouth of Darcy, the St. Louis Blues is now the model franchise (so no longer Detroit?). So then the discussion starts with, who will be our David Backes?

This coupled with the new dedication to building through the draft and the answer seems clear: The Sabres are trying to get to Alexander Barkov.

Please tell me he didn't say that. Please tell me the model isn't Saint freaking Louis.

He's been saying it for a while now.

Apparently I haven't been listening.

Outside of the first three seasons, where the playoffs guaranteed that an expansion team would appear in the finals, the Blues have made it to the final four exactly twice. They never have been very relevant or particularly exciting to watch; not even with the lineups they had in the mid-nineties. And this is the new model. Great.

Miller isn't going to Tampa. They just traded for Bishop. Plus I highly doubt Vinny is going to waive his no trade to come to Buffalo of all places. These next two years are going to make or break Darcy and the scouting staff. They can't afford any misses on these players in the first and second rounds.

Not only does TB have Bishop, but they also have Anders Lindback and 2012 1st round G prospect Andrei Vasilevski. They have zero interest in acquiring Miller.

It is an upgraded version of mediocrity.

Don't insult Barkov's offensive potential by comparing him to Backes :P

As to the St. Louis thing.....

A little surprised to see how negative people are towards St Louis. They play the kind of game that it seems people here are dying to see from the Sabres: Hard relentless forecheck, thought gritty hockey on all three zones, and a very stingy defense. Very similar to the LA Kings, and this year they outplayed the defending champions in 4 or 5 out of the 6 games, Jonathan Quick being essentially the only aspect of the game where the Kings were clearly better.

As for Backes, I don't think it's unreasonable to think Barkov will turn into a similar player. If he hits his ceiling, he might rack up a few more assists than Backes tends to do, and with the same physical edge. Perhaps I am being too cautious, but if we get a 25 - 30 goal a year power forward first line center out of whoever we draft this year I'll be ok with it.

Barkov is no softy, but Backes has an elite physical edge I doubt Barkov can match.

That said, Barkov is a much more creative player.

If we lucked into him, it's a pretty safe bet he would be our best drafted player since Vanek.

My problem with St. Louis is their defensive style combined with their entire top-6 consisting of 2nd- 3rd line players. It makes for exceptionally dull hockey to me.

On Barkov, I think his offensive ceiling is significantly higher than Backes. I'm thinking more like Kopitar: 70-80 points rather than 50-60.

I have a trade possibility what about both our second rounders and one of next years second rounders to move up between 9-15.

Both those picks and both our first rounders are very much in play, as are Miller and Vanek.

They want to add young, top line talent and they have the pieces to make that kind of deal.

And I suspect Darcy is under a lot of pressure from Pegula to make something happen.

We are focused on the draft, but I would not be surprised if he makes a move out of left field a bit and targets an emerging player at the end of his first contract.

That would be just our luck for Darcy to offer sheet someone and lose 3-4 first rounders as compensation when we are going into possibly 3-4 years of suckitude.

Is Jack Johnson considered a bust? I would think that any team would take a 40 pt defenseman that hits and blocks shots. His +/- looks bad but has improved over the past two seasons.

I don't think he's a 40pt guy without Drew Doughty but he's certainly not a bust.

He's probably a disappointing player for #3 or 4 overall, but 2005 was a pretty thin draft aside from Crosy and Kopitar.

Aside, I've seen Gauthier creeping up most draft boards. So maybe he is top 20.

I thought that is why the Sabres have Drew Stafford?

I would be hesitant to take him at 16. He does have good size but his skating is average and I also feel the same about his shot. Depending on who is available I would rather take someone like Erne/Shinkaruk

I wouldn't mind Horvat and Domi. Could be like the Halifax connection with MacKinnon and Drouin. Since Buffalo's chances of moving up into the top 4 will be impossible why not try to move up between 9-15 with both 2nd's and grab London's dynamic duo. Just a thought. This way they could have 3 picks in the top 16.

There are quite a few I would consider at 16. Shinkaruk would be no brainer.

Horvat, Domi.........I wouldn't be surprised by Hartman lasting to 16.

Hartman on a line with Zemgus, and Foligno could be a solid line for years.

As in Ryan Hartman?

I am only asking because I would consider that an very interesting pick at 16
