I'm thinking after last nights performance by MacKinnon he gets pick #1 to the Avs.

I'm evening thinking Jones falls to Tampa at 3. Just think the Avs would have 3 young players that can fly.

Avs really need defence and Jones grew up a Colorado fan - it is too good an opp not to take him

Erne has been described as a bull on the ice. HIm and Monahan would be a good first round

And for that 4th or 5th you are going to get a guy who is ready to score 25-40 in each of the next 6 years, playing with a 2 center and a good but undersized/non physical right wing.? You sign your talent imo .or you trade them for proven nhl level talent ..Unless we are talking elite talent in trading up , I would rather see him go in a package for a proven , nhl ready body with established offensive skills.I understand where you are coming from.but .it would be my last option...

Ideally that player would fit what the Sabres will be trying to build and be somewhere in his low to mid-twenties.

Now that's a trade worth considering.

A real hockey trade, like Kassian for Hodgson.

I miss those kind of trades.

If either of those players are on the market, Darcy needs to be kicking the tires.

Skinner is only 21 years old, the Canes would be foolish to move him. Like Couturier from the Flyers, he is a young kid that has already has a good amount of games under his belt. Skinner in the right situation could be a 40+ goal scorer. If the Sabres could obtain Jeff Skinner and somehow pry Couturier out of Philly, I'd Become the King of the Pollyannas.

You actually think a prospect's draft position is determined by one game?

No I think Colorado would have 3 young players in the lineup and then use the rest of the draft to acquire a defenseman or two.

Question and I am not sure if this is another topic, but after reviewing Erne and his drop in Central Scouting from 13 to 26 because of an early in year learning experience and because his team was playing bad, are there any other players out there that have a lot of talent but are being either undervalued or because of circumstances of the year have dropped, yet are still very talented?

Safe money is on the Avs taking Jones, but it really hinges on how they view their centers long term. I'm assuming Stastny isn't in the plans, so it comes down to O'Reilly. Are they prepared to pay what he'll be getting after his current contract, or will they really look to offload him when able? If they don't plan on keeping either for more than another year, MacKinnon suddenly makes a ton of sense.

While I'd prefer a move up for Lindolm, I'd be pretty happy if we end up with Monahan and Erne.

I can really see Colorado taking MacKinnon. I think Jones falls as scoring forwards are more in demand. Plus you look at the top defenseman picked they are solid players but you need scoring. Bowmeester and Johnson come to mind as top picks on why u don't pick a d-man @ 1.

Horvat and Domi seem very intriguing to me at 16 if they last that far.

OK.

Assuming Colorado assures us they take Jones first overall.

Miller + whatever else they want, except #8, to Tampa for Vinny and #3.

Vanek + whatever else they want, except #8, to Florida for #2.

#8 and #16 and Stafford + whatever else they want to the Preds for #4.

Sabres pick ...

MacKinnon #2

Drouin #3

And Fucale #4

Pick some stud sleeper defensemen in later rounds.

Vinny brought in for veteran leadership up the middle for two seasons.

The Sabres rebuild is complete in this draft.

I propose this with only half of a :P emoticon attached.

Is Jack Johnson considered a bust? I would think that any team would take a 40 pt defenseman that hits and blocks shots. His +/- looks bad but has improved over the past two seasons.

Jack Johnson probably not, but Erik Johnson probably would be considered a bust at number 1 overall.

I just don't see Terry Pegula being willing to pay Vinny's contract that pays $44 million over the next five years.

IMO, why do Tampa the favor?

Even Jack Johnson is probably a bust if you consider where he was drafted. He's a good enough offensive defenseman, but his defense hasn't gotten any better and he has really poor possession numbers. Not terrible, but not exactly what you're hoping for at #3 overall. Of course on the flip side, Drew Doughty was taken #2 his draft year and is an absolute stud.

I agree more or less with Jack, but was more making a point that I think the original post was talking about Erik rather than Jack. And Erik has been a complete bust at number 1.

Edit: After reading what I wrote I realize I contradicted my last post. Jack Johnson could certainly be considered a bust as a number 3 overall selection, but wouldn't be considered a bust compared to Erik Johnson.

I was talking about Erik Johnson. I just think Colorado takes MacKinnon and Jones either slips to Florida or Tampa. I'm thinking Florida might take Drouin to play with huberdeau which makes Jones slips to 3. Yes we know Colorado could use a d-man but a top 3 of Duchene, Landeskog, and MacKinnon would be pretty damn solid. Your in a win win with MacKinnon or Jones but I'm taking a goal scorer.

For every Erik Johnson there is a Patrik Stephan. As situations go, Jones seems to be as perfect a fit for Colorado as there can be. It's like the Sabres picking first with Patrick Kane as the top prospect.

To get that #3 pick.

If Tampa is going for it and they want to win now and feel Miller can put them over the top, wouldn't Vinny be part of their plans as well? I also doubt there is anything the Sabres could do to convince Vinny to waive his NMC to come to Buffalo.

I like the idea of Miller to Tampa, it makes a lot of sense. A deal involving the #3 pick would be huge, it's just the Vinny part that makes little to no sense. If the Lightning need to clear cap space, then Ryan Malone would make far more sense for the Sabres, he has $5 mil coming his way over the next two seasons. Even then, it is likely the Sabres would be on his 12 team no-trade list. The only big contract the Lightning have that does not include a NMC or NTC is Victor Hedman, who I would love to see in a Sabres uniform.

Ignoring any conversation about TB who just traded for a goal tender...

In my perfect draft Monahan falls to us. We trade up from 16 and take Ristolainen. In round 2 we only have the 38 pick now and we take Justin Bailey. Gives u #1 center, #2 defender, and #2RW in 3yrs.

Miller isn't going to Tampa. They just traded for Bishop. Plus I highly doubt Vinny is going to waive his no trade to come to Buffalo of all places. These next two years are going to make or break Darcy and the scouting staff. They can't afford any misses on these players in the first and second rounds.

While I agree that Darcy can't afford to miss on any of his top draft choices this year or any coming year, the chances of Grigs, Girgs, Armia, and whoever the first rounders are this year is of making it are not good. Even the best teams miss on guys drafted as high as 1st overall. Drafting mid first round is almost a complete roll of the dice.

Drouin at #4 vanek will go to nashville for #4 pick + hornqvist

#8 monahan i guess

So instead of having 8 years of control over Drouin and a cheap salary for the next few years and another good young player in Hornqvist the Preds want one year of 29 year old Thomas Vanek at 3.5-7 mil?

Really glad you brought this up. Vanek and Millers value are significantly less because they are only under contract for next season. No team is trading a potential superstar they can have under contract for the next decade for one year of a very good player. A GM would be a fool to consider such a move.

That is where... cough (blow....) Darcy's skill has to come to play. Sign and trade kinda deal, gotta have a deal in place and be close in theory to an extension the other team likes. All ifs but it could be done.

Makorov playing great for Saskatoon. 2 first stars of the game against two of the best junior teams.

Just read the write up, Makorov out played Fucale... which is why you don't draft a goalie in the first round... or you might get Fucaled... :P
