I think it's possible to get the #4 pick but it would probably cost you Vanek and one second.

That's a fair deal. The trouble is, Nashville might not be able to take on $7 million in Vanek with their internal budget.

I don't think there's any way you get #4 for Vanek and a second. I can't picture any team, especially a smaller market, giving up 7 years club control of a prospect of Barkov's caliber for only one guaranteed year of Vanek at $7 million, followed by assuredly more than $7 million even if he re-signs.

Vanek is at least worth a first rounder. I think if your gonna trade up its going to cost u alot. Off the top players for a minute I'm thinking Max Domi is like this years Jeff Skinner. I don't think he should be overlooked.

There is always the three team trade. Don't see too many though.

Vanek is absolutely worth more than a 1st and any deal involving him will return a 1st as part of the package...but the top of the first is an entirely different animal than a typical 1st round pick.

With any Vanek deal, I would be looking for something in the neighborhood of the Staal trade last year. He was one year away from unrestricted free agency as well and Vanek is a much more prolific scorer. Being a high potential center and a bit younger probably nets a higher return for Staal, but Vanek should get you at least a first round pick and one or two NHL ready talents.

How high a first round pick? Well that's another question all together.

Carolina did have the added factor of 100% certainty Staal would resign.

Which also cost Pittsburgh some leverage because the world knew Jordan wasn't signing an extension anywhere else.

Yeah, Carolina traded a top prospect, another good prospect and a top 10 pick in order to get 48 additional games with a player they definitely would have been able to sign this summer.

Yea, that's what I don't get. Of course, if you're GM of a team that hasn't won in awhile and you either think the move makes you a contender or you have to do something big to save your job, I can sort of understand it.

That's why I said from the beginning that Carolina got kind of fleeced. Just the Staal for Sutter swap alone the Pens really don't lose a thing in terms of what they want/need from a 3rd line center.

edit: and when you think about realignment the Canes gave an awful lot of future ammo to what is now a division rival in this trade as well.

*alarm bells*

Yep, there is no way I would want to take a chance on this guy. I'm all for us taking more chances than Darcy is accustomed too but this franchise absolutely HAS to hit on our early draft choices this year.

Hey I'm in Nashville til tomorrow then on vacation for a week but ill have to watch tape and read up on possible 14-17 place projections. Right now if Nikita Zadarov was available at 16 id take him. He's big 6'5" 230 lbs and is a physical dman.

Also impo unless Fucale is available in round 2 the Sabres won't take him, we have far to many needs elsewhere

That is simply not the case. You don't draft for the holes in your lineup today, you look at the young players and how they project into your lineup at least three years from now

Forwards:

Ennis Hodgson Foligno Girgorenko Girgensons Armia Larsson

Defencemen:

Myers Pysyk McNabb McCabe

Goalie:

Hackett, Makarov

I would not say goalie looks like a strength.

If I were GM I would draft a goalie in the first three rounds every year. You can never have too many and if you end up with numbers and quality at the position it is an asset that is easy to move.

It's much easier to find a good goalie later in the draft than it is to find a good forward or defenseman later in the draft. I'd rather use the first couple rounds for skaters.

actually with only 50 players eligible under contract, you can have too many.

Miller, Hackett, Liewellen, Knapp, and Markorov are penciled already take up 5 of the 50 slots for next year with only 32 players under contract so far.

With Enroth, Hodgson, Weber, and Flynn (RFAs) not yet qualified under offer (36)

And Pardy, Sulzer, and Scott UFAs. (39)

Figure Rochester to carry 6 or 7 two-way contracts for depth. (46) And suddenly things start looking pretty tight.

I totally agree. Good forwards are hard to find in late rounds unless your Detriot!

The idea is to rotate the prospects through, you're not going to sign each goalie prospect right away and some you may not sign at all. The number is limited as far as how many pro-goaltenders you can have. I would still like to have a steady stream of goalie talent to choose from, keep the best and move what you can via trades.

I can understand this, it's a valid point. It would be outside the norm, I still would prefer to hoard goalie prospects.

Look at the good teams in the league they have plenty of scoring and solid goaltending. I wouldn't be overly concerned about drafting more goalies. This team lacks any serious scorers in the system so to me that's a priority.
