Is Barkov a franchise talent, who just happens to be behind three other franchise talents?

Would he have been battling Yakupov for number one last year?

If so, then I am willing to move Vanek or Miller in order to get him.

Don't know what you call a franchise talent, but the last I read about Barkov is that he is the most promising Nordic talent since Forsberg if you look at the stats. He projects to be a first line center power forward with great vision and excellent hands.

The talk is all about the big three and it seems that both Drouin and MacKinnon has more flash, but Barkov fills so many needs for the Sabres.

I am assuming Vanek and Miller will not resign before the draft, which will effectively end their tenures in buffalo. You need to trade them for something, and the whole league will know by then that they offer little value to a rebuilding club like the sabres, so their trade value drops significantly.

June 30 is draft day. July 5th is when you can sign free agents this year.

We've been talking quite a bit about the #8 spot. But should the Wild lose to Chicago....#16 is looking pretty tasty too.

Mantha, Horvat, Lazar, Domi, Wennburg, Zatorov all might be available at 16.

And there is always somebody that falls from the top 10.

This is as strong a first round as I've seen in years.

Which supports my position to stand pat and forget any trade up.

I'm hoping the Sabres have their choice of Lindholm, Monahan, and Nichushkin should they stand pat.

Ya I wouldn't mind having a discussion around who might be at 16 that would help us organizationally. Liger, I'm looking at you as your analysis on Monaghan was in depth and informative. Assuming we don't trade up and keep the 8 and 16 pick I know alot of the names that might be there at 8 but not much about most guys projected to go around 16. I suppose the pick at 8 would likely influence 16 so it makes it harder to predict but after the way this season went, this is the only enjoyment I get right now.

Going loosely off of the Trade Value thread, if we traded the entire roster and added the results to our current picks, we would have:

12 first round picks

8 second round picks

6 third round picks

Bits of other rounds.

(interesting, I guess that's the "total value" of our NHL roster in picks right now, sans Ruhwedel)

LET'S DO IT. :w00t:

The guy that is most likely to fall out of the top 10 to 16 is Hunter Shinkaruk IMO. The kid is pure offense but thought to be undersized, and not very physical. He's been compared to Phil Kessel.

I have a hunch he might drop to 16, simply because there are more physical players with high end talent available.

He could be a bargain at 16 for a scoring sniper. Can play wing or center.

Kind of sounds like the guy we got with our second first round pick a few years ago....Mr. Ennis.

I've seen a few of his games as i posted months ago, and i agree. They do play very similar styles. The only difference i would say, is, Ennis seems very mellow, while Shinkaruk has more swag to his game, kinda like a Brad Marchand. Plays with a bit of an edge, and is cocky.

Interesting, thanks for the insight.

If Regier wants to buy me into the defend Darcy camp at all costs he does the following:

  • Drafts Barkov at 4
  • Drafts Monahan at 7/8
  • Drafts Erne or Fucale at 16

Yes that is 3 first rounders. I want him to get me that number 4. Even if it costs Vanek

Hodsgon - Barkov - Armia

Ennis - Grigo - Erne

Girgenson - Monahan - Larsson

Darcy's going to be disappointed that you won't be defending him.

Getting to 4 while retaining 8 & 16 is simply unrealistic.

IMO getting to 4 at all is unrealistic (I hope it happens....but yea). I still think swapping spots with Edmonton to ensure we get whichever is left of Monahan/Lindolm/Nichushkin makes a lot of sense, and is also a reasonable expectation.

Was hoping some ahead of 8 would take D-men. I expect after Jones, the Oil will select D also. Additionally, I was thinking that Nichushkin would drop because of the "Russian" factor. In the end, you're probably correct.

Speaking of Nichushkin, I hadn't seen this before: NHL or bust for Nichushkin: http://futureconside...for-nichushkin/

When Valeri Nichushkin comes to play hockey in North America, there’s only one league he’s got his mind set on – the National Hockey League.

The 6-foot-4, 196-pound forward has little desire to play in the American Hockey League and even less to skate in Canada’s junior ranks, he told Future Considerations’ Roman Soloviev.

“If I go to North America, I’ll go only to NHL,” Nichushkin said earlier this week at the World Under-18 Championship. “I played in KHL, why [do] I need to go to CHL or AHL?”

I expect Edmonton to take D as well. I outlined my logic in another post...basically, they want D and know the Sabres want a forward, so probably wouldn't mind swapping with NJ (who needs forward help). It makes sense to me for NJ to try to leapfrog the Sabres to get the last high-end talent, and my idea prevents that from happening.

Completely agree with you. I posted a link earlier about the Oil potentially shopping the 7 pick for exactly the same reason.

I dunno, it is fair enough. If you can play as a 17 year old in the second best league in the world, why should you need to play in the 6th best when you come to America. I think what he means is, he won't come to America until he can crack the NHL line up full time

More interestingly, in the article they ask who he wants to play for and he said Flyers or Rangers, because they are good teams aren't they. He clearly doesn't follow the NHL at all

He might also be getting traded from the team he just signed an extension with - that might help get him to America

I was more joking about the suggestion fo getting 4 and keeping 8/16. Still, a man can dream

May not be as bad as you think if you read the entire content of the link.

Especially considering the Engrish either this reporter is putting into text or the kid is actually saying...

“After [the Under-18's], I would go take some rest, than to U.S. for NHL Combine, the whole summer I would be training there.”

“Philadelphia Flyers or New York Rangers, they are good teams, aren’t it?”

The Sabres would obviously talk to the kid, like they did with Grigorenko, and see what his interest is.
