The real question is how long does Nichushkin last before somebody takes a chance on him? If Monahan and Lindolm are both gone, I'm all for the Sabres risking it.

if we drafted 12th and just like Grigorenko, Nichuskin fell to us... I would be having a very long talk with him well prior to the draft. It is a high risk high reward situation but if he fell all the way to 12th or so and the rest of those guys are all gone, yes I think you may need to risk it and just accept the fact he wont touch NHL ice for at least 2yrs (if you could buy out the end of his deal)

Completely agree.

Okay so taking a look at the standings this morning we are currently slated to draft 9th. I think it is safe to guess that we draft btw 8-10th unless a lottery miracle occurs. With the latest rankings by http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=92324 and Craig http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=49649 it appears that our options will likely be 1 of the following 4 players.

1) Sean Monahan, ranked 7th or 9th has a real possibility of becoming a Sabre which if you have followed this thread makes me pretty stoked

2) Elias Lindholm, ranked 8th or 8th is a Swedish C/RW who has 30pts last season for Brynas of the Elisterien League.

Now after these two the rankings get a little more difficult to read. Fucale, Max Domi, and Bo Horvat all fall into this area of haziness but I would argue they are not Sabres targets. My reasoning has to do with position as well as their risk reward potential. I think the sabres will look for higher upside. That is not a knock against any of them.

3) Nikita Zadorov, ranked 7 or 11th he is a 6'5" defender playing for London in the OHL this 230lb kid likes using his size and is a +30 during his first OHL season. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=656392

Out of all the defensive prospects in the draft this is the guy I would love to see on a line with Weber. Only catch is he is a left handed shot but a mobile 6'5" guy who is bulky... well? look at his name you know he is going to be good!

4) Hunter Shinkaruk, ranked 12th or 13th he would be a reach 8-10th depending on the draft goes but the 5'11" WHL forward has 86pts in 64 games in the WHL and is lefty who plays RW. Speedy, highly skilled, and a decent shot this kids downside might be only his size. More of a 1-2yrs away over a step right in guy Shinkaruk needs a good center and I think CoHo and him would be great together.

So there you have it. My top 4 that the Sabres could actually draft if they finished 8-10th, this of course bars them trading up or winning the lottery but I think they will use their 1st round pick where it falls and then trade up the Minn. pick to the mid teens if Minn makes and does well in the playoffs.

I'm still hoping Minny lose their next 3 and drop out of the playoffs...then we would have like a 2.5% chance of winning instead of just 2%

Final rankings are out. Jones takes top NA skater, Barkov takes top Euro skater and the Fucale takes top NA goalie.

The top 8 are: Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Nurse, Mohannan, Barkov, Nushkinen and Lindholm (not in that order overall, but that is the top 5 NA and top 3 euro order)

I would like us to pick Adam Erne up with our second rounder (ranked 26th NA skater atm). The guy played on a line with Grigo and plays like a bull apparently

Not likely in the lottery with them already in 7th place at 53 points and remaining games vs. Edmonton and @ Colorado.

We need to trade that pick and 1 of our seconds to move up on draft day.

Scott Niedermeyer (Jones)

Steven Stamkos (MacKinnon)

Martin St Louis (Drouin)

Shea Weber (Nurse)

Eric Staal (Monahan)

Lundqvist/Ward (Fucale)

They are the comparisons

...ad the Sabres are playing themselves out of drafting any of them.

Is there any scenario where the Sabres could conceivably trade up into the top three or four?

Miller, Vanek, and our two first rounders are definitely chips, but to make a deal you need a willing partner.

Notwithstanding the lottery, I think Jones to Florida is a given: talent meets need.

If Nashville has a shot at Drouin or McKinnon or even Barkov, I can't see them giving it up for anything. They've been looking for a star forward prospect forever.

Same goes for Calgary, unless Feaster really is a fool.

But if Edmonton is there, do they really need another future first line forward?

Aren't Carolina and Tampa built in a way that might make a quick fix worth looking at?

Does anyone understand the plan in Colorado?

Top- end picks rarely move, but conventional thinking does change and evolve and the cap and free agency have made it a different league. Is there an opportunity here?

Nashville and Calgary need offence. Caroline and Edmonton need defence. Tampa needs a goalie, but also defence.

I could see us trading from 8th to 5th, because there are only three D (Nurse, Jones and Ristolainen) in the top 10. Alternatively, I could see Edmonton/Calgary picking Nurse or Ristolainen, which would mean someone like Mohanen would drop a little.

There are only 5 guys I really want. Jones, Barkov, MacKinnon, Mohanen and Drouin (in that order). So I hope that we move up to get the number 5 slot. Tampa and Carolina are both possible trade partners

idk who Mohanen is but it sounds like a good hockey name :P

Anyways, if I had to actually sit down and predict the draft as of right this moment in time with the current standings (1 change being philly overtakes us and we drop 1 slot) and barring trades here are my top 10 selections:

1) Florida: Jones (D)

- need a star defensemen, I got a star defensemen

2) Colorado: MacKinnon (C/RW)

- This team is a mess and needs help, with Statsny a UFA after next year I think they grab a center but its Colorado and they just kinda wing it

3) Tampa Bay: Nurse (D)

- With a stack of forwards boasting NMC/NTC and considering how craptastic their defense was, they take a defender who has been compared to Shea Weber

4) Nashville: Drouin (LW)

- one of the weakest offensive teams in the game, Drouin fills a need and will instantly make them better, they have every reason to take him

5) Edmonton: Ristolainen (D)

- they have forwards for their forwards and need defense, they will take the best defensemen left to them and I think that is Rasmus (also a possible trade down candidate)

6) Carolina: Nichuskin (LW)

- taking a bit of a gamble they draft probably the 2nd best winger in the draft and assume it pans out in 2-3yrs, they are deep at center so it makes sense

7) Calgary: Barkov ©

- they may take Monahan if they are concerned with Barkov's shoulder but I think they will want a guy they believe is very close to NHL ready

8) Buffalo: Monahan ©

- if he is gone they take either Barkov/Lidnholm because I see no way that Regier passes up on getting a #1 center prospect again, but Monahan is the prize IMHO

9) Philadelphia: Fucale (G)

- having ridden the goaltending carosel long enough, they burn a first and get the guy of their future and worry about offense/defense some other time

10) New Jersey: Lindholm ©

- with basically a brand new roster look for next season they take a C who could be their #1 for years to come

In my ideal world we use St Louis 2nd round pick and our 1st to move from 8th to 5th, trading with Edmonton and assuring them we are drafting a forward. I think they will bite because they foresee the run on forwards that I do and are not worried about dropping a little if they add another 2nd round pick. In this case we still draft Monahan unless Drouin/Mackinnon (LOL) falls to 5th.

As for the standings and where we select (ignoring the lottery for this analysis) can we do no worse than selecting 9th? If we win our last game we could jump over the Devils if they lose their last 2 but we would be tied with Dallas and Pheonix (if they both lose out) but we would have the worse ROW (I'm assuming this is the tiebreaker). Therefore the absolute worse we could pick is 10th if someone (unlikely) behind us wins the lottery.

As for the best we could case scenario Philly and Calgary could potentially pass us and we would then pick 7th? Unless of course we win the lottery. So am I right in thinking that unless we win the lottery we will likely be picking 7th - 10th with it likely being 7th - 9th?

you would be correct in your math,

#Sabres draft note. Will pick between 7-10. Odds for lottery win are more than doubled if it's 7th.
