I can imagine it and I've been predicting it all year long. :(

You and me both, but let's be honest here and say that we didn't exactly need to go way out on a limb for that prediction. It's the Sabres being the Sabres.

do you believe they could win a playoff series most likely against Pittsburgh or Boston?

I believe a huge weakness of the recent roster was the lack of depth. The lack of secondary scoring, and the Lack of Fire. The young guys on the current roster are showing they they may be able to provide all three. Now we need to add on the top. We could have got a sure thing at the draft for the top of the roster. That would have been awesome, but it also would have likely meant that half our current NHL ready prospects are incapable of playing at the NHL level.

I agree, 1st pick is great. But these guys being able to play this game at this level is just as important.

He'd be a nice pick.

Outside of the top 3 I would be happy with him or Lindholm.

I laugh every time I see Max Domi climb.

I haven't seen him play yet, but Tie Domi still makes me laugh.

I'll do a backflip if we somehow land Monahan without trading up.

I'll do a backflip if we land Lindholm no matter how we do it.

Whats going on with that first rounder new jersey was required to give up after the kovalchuck signing? Did they decide they would be not using it next year? (2014 was the last year they had to do it iirc)

Surely they'll keep their pick this year. I still can't for the life of me figure out why they held on the the 29th pick last year. That's absolutely crazy.

Are they required to decide which year they will forego the pick prior to the season? That would seem to make more sense from a league perspective.

They couldn't risk the Rangers somehow getting Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!!

After Barkov, I think it is pretty wide open. I also think that there are a ton of good players available in the first round and the obsession with the top-3 perhaps obscures this fact. With Minnesota's pick (hopefully they continue to slide), we'll get two very good players if Darcy doesn't botch the picks. I'd like to see us pick one d-man and one forward, and then perhaps a goalie in the 2nd round...

I have no doubt we can get a good player. But good players don't win championships. We've had good players for years, hell, we have a bunch of good players now. What we don't have are the great players necessary to win consistently, and the chances of getting those in the middle of the first is drastically lower than the top five.

I disagree with your conclusion that if we sucked enough for a top pick it would mean our prospects aren't capable of playing in the NHL. I think it would mean they're young, rookies, and maybe shouldn't have all been on the roster at once.

I'd concur.

As a point of reference, 28-39-13 - 69; 29-35-16 - 74 w/ a 3-0 1st round sweep of a team that went 45-22-13 - 103; 48-17-15 - 111. Clearly that 1st squad had no business in the NHL. ;)

And no, in no way am I comparing this year's squad with the '79-'80 Eulers.

Looking at the updated mock draft, http://www.mynhldraf...NHL-Mock-Draft/, you would think I made the Sabres selections. A 6' 5" defenseman and a 6' 5" center.

If the draft plays out like they have it, i like our second pick Frederik Gauthier. Seems to have loads of potential. I have little interest in our first pick though. Nikita Zadorov seems too much of a project player. I guess it makes him a good fit for "Sabres University" but i'd prefer a less of a high risk player at that spot, even though the reward may not be as high. Ryan Pulock wouldn't be a bad choice if we were picking 10th.

If we pick outside the top-4, i think the team needs to do anything and everything possible to move up and draft Darnell Nurse though. If they fail to get Nurse, i also wouldnt mind Hunter Shinkaruk (whos 9th in this mock).

Although, it should be noted, before we start putting too much stock into the "my hockey draft" web-site, their 2012 mock draft, outside the top 3 picks, was brutal. Grigorenko was 5th to Toronto, Girgensons was actually 14th to Calgary. They had Buffalo selecting Olli Maatta (12th pick) and then Tom Wilson (Nashville pick).

In 2011, they had Sabres picking Boone Janner with pick 16, while Joel Armia 23rd to Pittsburgh.

Almost every mock draft is brutal after the first few picks.

I can't blame them for not having Grigorenko drop because I don't think anyone saw that coming. Getting Girgensons right at no.14 overall (even if the team was wrong due to a draft day trade) is pretty good.

These are all just best guesses for who should go where. Each team has its own rankings and that's how things get scrambled every year.

Eh, not true. Especially not legit draft sites the day of the draft when they release final mocks.

My buddies and I always watch the draft. We buy pizza and some beers, and all do mock drafts for fun. The winner usually gets 6-7 picks right. How come a bunch of couch potato drunks get better results draft then this web site?

It must be your brand of beer.

6-7? That'd put your winner in elite company. Last I heard, the most accurate published mock drafts hit at around that clip. For shi!ts and giggles, how about you post your/your group's mock(s) when the time comes?

I plan to sit down and put together a first round draft. I will wait until the season rankings are set and then go through each team... Last year I did the first 10 picks and hit on 7 but with all 30 who knows.

I like the idea of making an event of watching the draft, but in the back of my mind I know it's just going to be a bunch of old guys sitting at tables. The trades are fun, though.

I just can't get into something that is so unknown. After the top 5 or ten picks, it's all a giant crapshoot. Most of these kids, especially after the top 5 or 10, you aren't going to see or hear from in 3-4 years. How can anyone get excited about that?

That's why finishing near the tip this year was imperative. They finally had a chance to get a difference maker, only to screw it up with a bunch of AHLers playing their butts off to stay in the show.

I would argue that goaltending had more to do with it.
