I'm glad you said it. Miller's worth more than (what currently is) 7 spots in the draft.

It's not all about talent now, salary cap is a big factor.

We don't really know what it would take to get a team to trade out of the top 3, though.

Possibly irrelevant story:

Back in 1999, Vancouver acquired the 3rd overall selection from Chicago, sending away next year's 1st round pick (ended up 10th overall) and a former 2nd round pick defenseman in Brian McCabe who hadn't yet had his breakout season and become the long time Leaf veteran. Vancouver would pick 2nd and 3rd in 1999, taking the Sedin twins, as Atlanta famously bombs with Patrick Stefan at 1st overall. Chicago would then pick 10th and 11th in 2000, solidly squandering those selections also.

I think Miller would be worth more than a not-yet-established McCabe. (and you can't say McCabe would end up better using hindsight, because in hindsight, there's no way the Blackhawks go through with that deal)

True, but Feaster's spent the last two years having to dump large salaries attached to NTCs. Not sure they buy Miller to begin with. If they do, as mentioned in the interim, not sure Miller waives his NTC to be traded to Feater's Follies.

I don't think it's impossible to trade up to a top 3 pick. The Panthers are so loaded with rookies and prospects that Tallon might consider a trade.

IKnow,

Agree with all of your points. I think we all need to reset our value expectations for Miller and Vanek. Since they are coming in with 6-7 million cap hits, we may have to take lesser value than we think they are worth (or keep some of their salary which is counterproductive).

We don't even need to trade that high. The fourth overall pick should be Barkov and the fifth overall pick should be Lindholm. I might package both our first rounders for one of them (not sure if one of those teams would trade down though).

Also, Vanek doesn't have any NTC so we have lots of options with him.

Or maybe it's both: We trade both of the firsts we currently have to move up into the top 5 and then we land another 1st round pick later by trading Vanek or Miller. This would actually be exciting as well.

Weren't the Sedin's threatening to not play in the NHL if they weren't on the same team, or something like that?

@Tondas: Retaining salary from Miller/Vanek wouldn't be counterproductive because we're likely not going to be contending next year and we wont be close to the cap. Retaining salary is a good way to maximize the return of any trades.

Good point. Very good point. Hopefully, Darcy leverages that......... I'm laughing a little bit now.

After Barkov, I think it is pretty wide open. I also think that there are a ton of good players available in the first round and the obsession with the top-3 perhaps obscures this fact. With Minnesota's pick (hopefully they continue to slide), we'll get two very good players if Darcy doesn't botch the picks. I'd like to see us pick one d-man and one forward, and then perhaps a goalie in the 2nd round...

I think there are about 7-8 difference-makers at the top of the draft, and then everyone after that for the next 50 picks seems fairly similar. If we can trade up to get a difference-maker, I'm all for it. Elias Lindholm would immediately be our no.1 prospect and Darnell Nurse would immediately be our best defensive prospect.

The Sabres are good at finding "NHL players" in the later rounds but they struggle to find elite players because they draft too late. I'd hope we could fix that.

Jeremy White was saying this morning..."I want Minnesota to miss the playoffs so that the Sabres end up with two chances in the draft lottery!!". While he is in correct, if the Wild miss the playoffs, chances are they will end up being the "best" team to miss, giving them a .5% chance of winning the lottery.

Don't get me wrong, the Wild missing the playoffs guarantees that the Sabres get an extra first round pick somewhere around 13-14, but the odds are long that the Minnesota pick would end up winning the lottery...1 in 200 or 1 in 100 ODDS LONG.

PS I go away for the weekend, and come back to find out they won both games. Unbelievable. Way to build on the two terrible mid-week losses last week.

Yeah, the lottery is so heavily skewed towards the worst five teams that finishing 9th in either conference barely counts as being eligible. (Time to take another look at my idea to make the first 14 picks among non-playoff teams completely random?)

It would be hilarious if the Sabres ended up with the 13th and 14th picks overall after both they and Minnesota finish 9th in their respective conferences. Not good, mind you, just hilarious.

Unfortunately, we won't be that lucky. We're going to end up with one of those two and then something around 20th.

Could you imagine a worse finish to this season than what we will likely get:

1) Win just enough to kill your own #1 draft pick

2) Don't win enough to even make the playoffs

3) Win enough to show that the coach should stay on

and the coup de grâce:

4) Win just enough to show that Darcy should stay.

All of this is made worse by the overwhelming feeling of déjà vu. :wallbash:

I can imagine it and I've been predicting it all year long. :(

Look at the bright side, the young guys we already have are proving capable of winning NHL Hockey Games. That has to count for something.

It counts as another strong finish that won't mean anything when we're getting our ass kicked for the first four months of next season.

How much do you want to bet that we're at the bottom of the league at the midpoint of next season? And then that we're moving up to around the "10th worst" record by the end of next season? Follow the format.

do you believe they could win a playoff series most likely against Pittsburgh or Boston?
