WildCard Posted September 28, 2015 Report Posted September 28, 2015 You'll get no argument from me on this. .... but he was right to call Harper out. How? He's a trade deadline pickup calling out the franchise cornerstone, mid-game no less. So much for a veteran move right there. Then, after calling him out, instead of waiting for later to deal with it, he decides to choke out a visably pissed off Harper. I can't say for certain, but I bet if another vet called out Harper, or if Pap did it in a better way, that wouldn't have happened. The best part? Pap goes out and blows the save, in glorious fashion no less. Quote

IMO it's just not Pap's place. The manager, Werth, Zimmerman, any one of those guys. Not Pap, for all the reasons above. He was called out before (Harper) by his manager a few years back. No big deal, he went out and started hustling, and that was that. Plus, would Pap do that to another vet? Vets don't run out the ball all the time, it's not a huge deal. If I'm Harper, and I get crap from Pap for not running out one of 300 ground balls I've hit this year, after the way this season has went, I'd be ticked off. I'll admit, I'm probably being a homer (Harper is my favorite player) and hating Pap probably has a solid influence on my view here, but I don't know, I just can't see why Pap did what he did, or how he can even justify it. Sabel79 Posted September 28, 2015 Report Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) Are you saying Harper doesn't hustle? He's one of about 10 players in the league that sprints out every ground ball. And, I know this isn't your point, but he just had, statistically speaking, one of the best seasons ever, at 22 years old Dude does not run out ground balls / pop ups. Ever. Hence the heat from the dugout. I bet JP isn't the only one who wanted to choke him. Just the only one with poor enough impulse control to do it in front of the cameras. The organization might quietly like that he called Harper out, but the rest of it was horrifying to them. If you so quickly grab the throat of the NL MVP, you can't be run out of town fast enough. Not the choke. I appreciate them fighting in front of the cameras for us to see and not just speculate. But you really shouldn't do that if you're Papelbon and you would like playing in the pros. And Pap blowing the save was great. I hate his ridiculous stare in. I still love it when he blows one. Quote

Harper's still younger than just about everyone in their typical rookie year (yes, I know he's not a rookie). He may very well learn the lesson over time, he wouldn't be the first to mature. If Papelbon really needed to send the message, attempted career suicide probably wasn't the best way to go about it. I'd love to be the camera man who just happened to be pointed right at that. He just earned himself a nice little raise. Quote
Sabel79 Posted September 28, 2015 Report Posted September 28, 2015 I find the split in opinion in what I'm reading out there to be fascinating. Reporters / columnists are all very staunchly pro-Harper. "He's the MVP! He's too good for this!" Players, albeit "Unnamed Players" are disappointed it happened in front of the cameras, for the most part. Kid's got a rep for this kind of thing. The old guys go bananas over stuff like that. Quote
ubkev Posted September 28, 2015 Report Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) I liked this take on the Harper/Papelbon situation. http://nypost.com/2015/09/28/baseball-brethren-bryce-harper-had-choke-coming/ Edit to add: Respect the game or be called out. What happens after that, happens. Edited September 28, 2015 by ubkev Quote

I hope to be saying the same about the Rangers soon! 3 - 0 now with *Joe Bats* at the plate with the bases loaded. ----- A two out RBI for Jose makes it 4 - 0. Doohicksie Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 The Rangers magic number is 3 with the fading Astros, 4 with the Angels. They have one more game with Detroit tonight, then a 4 game series with the Angels to close the season. If they win tonight and split with the Angels, they're in. If they can't at least split with the team that's chasing them, maybe they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. Quote
Weave Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Dodgers are in. 3rd season in a row. I think this year they might have the horses to do something with it. Quote
Sabres Fan in NS Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 8 - 0 Jays. Their magic # to clinch home field throughout they playoffs, including the World Series ... not to get ahead of myself here ... is 3, I think. Quote
ubkev Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 So when the Yankees blow this and end up winning 1 of their next 5 and miss the playoffs all together, Girardi and Cashman are fired, right? Quote

WildCard Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Whoa whoa whoa, Cahsman and Girardi aren't going anywhere. Anywhere. Cahsman has actually really impressed me this year Quote

Whoa whoa whoa, Cahsman and Girardi aren't going anywhere. Anywhere. Cahsman has actually really impressed me this year Whoa whoa whoa, third year in a row without 90 wins, and if they don't win at least 2 more, it will be the third year in a row with no playoffs. Unacceptable. Quote
WildCard Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 (edited) Wanna rag on Cashman? Go ahead and look at their farm system. Or Bird, Gregorius, Severino, etc. They have a ton, ton of legit young talent coming, and for the first time in nearly a decade they didn't try and trade that away to win this year. Nobody thought the Yankees were going to be good this year, let alone get a WC spot Whoa whoa whoa, third year in a row without 90 wins, and if they don't win at least 2 more, it will be the third year in a row with no playoffs. Unacceptable. There are 5 teams going to the postseason in the AL, only 2 of them will have 90 wins. There are 5 games left, and they have a 3 game lead, they will make the playoffs. Aaron Judge is a strikeout machine whose hitting suffered severely as soon as he got to Scranton (seriously, he might be Mark Reynolds). Severino may just be special though. He has looked damn good so far, as has Bird. I hope the guys in A ball and AA ball are ready to impress next year and earn mid-season promotions because the Railriders are light on MLB talent. Especially the starting pitchers. Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 You all don't need to worry about who makes it in, or not. Really, does anyone think the Blue Jays are beatable in the AL? Very strong pitching ... starters and relievers ... and a starting lineup that can out score anybody. Unless something really goes wrong I see a Jays - Cardinals (maybe Dodgers) World Series in the near future. Quote
Doohicksie Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Meh. Since the All-Star break, the Rangers have played just about even with the Jays. Don't think they're gonna get in without a fight. Quote

In fact, they are the team with the best record, as of now. Quote
