The other sports thread

Actually now that I think about it, the only events I make an effort to watch in the summer games are swimming and sprinting and beach volleyball. I'm a winter Olympics kind of guy.

So your issue isn't with activities people do to get in shape as sports writ large, but rather, just the idea of weight lifting as a sport.

Pretty much. And as I type this, it's right back on ESPN. Lol

ESPN has went downhill in the last 5 years or so, IMO

They're just getting back to their roots by showing ridiculous stuff late at night. :)

Speaking of which, how does World's Strongest Man fit into this? Magnus Ver Magnusson is the man!

I hate Cross fit with the fire of a thousand suns. Working out is what you do to prepare for a sport. That's not the same thing as being a sport itself.

The current "event" on ESPN right now is a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 100 push ups and 100 squats. How is that an event? That's just going to the gym.

Oh, and these guys can't do pull ups for ######!

Yeah, it's hard and requires endurance and strength. But I still think it sucks.

/end rant.

Sorry for offending the cross fitters.

Sooooo you hate, I dunno, how much of the summer Olympics? Half?

I'm right there with you ubkev. CrossFit is just something I can't get into.

My distinction with the Olympics (which I love) is that it is a pretty defined objective that can relate back as far as I can remember. Most of the track events can be compared to the idea of challenging another to win a race. Heck, even kids growing up have similar competitions with "betcha I can beat you to that light post over there!" type stuff.

CrossFit just seems too contrived to me. The events seem to be completely made up on the spot and have limited consistency year to year so you can't set records or compare yourself to past competitors. No child out there is saying "betcha I can run around the block, then do 20 push ups, then climb the flag pole, then lift something heavy a bunch of times before you can".

Yeah, my argument is that if a child thinks its stupid then it isn't worthwhile as a sport.

That's pretty much the way I feel about the X Games.  However I'm sure that's how people felt about football a hundred years ago.  We may or may not be on the wrong side of history.  These Cross Fit games are simply filler while the only sport going on is baseball.  If it gets a following it may continue and may become some kind of big deal.  If the ratings don't come, though, they'll move onto the next filler.

I feel that way about most judging based activities. But that is a whole 'nother discussion.

I'm only 26. I'm most certainly on the right side of history.

Cole Hamels will likely become the first player ever to throw a no-hitter and then start your next game for another team.

As a Red Sox fan I hate that they are being mentioned in the Hamels sweepstakes. This is a team that needs to start unloading big time. They are a classic example of a team looking to add names rather than address the real problem which is they need to blow it up and start from ground zero. There are a few younger players they can keep, but Ramirez, Sandoval, Ortiz and Napoli need to go. I would also move the closers while they still have a little value.

Ortiz and Napoli are a given, but Sandoval and Ramirez are both pretty young and aren't going anywhere. You're problem is starting pitching, and bullpen pitching for that matter

Pitching is a huge problem, unfortunately the Red Sox have more problems than just pitching. Sandoval just doesn't hit enough to make up for his fielding and I'm not a Ramirez fan.

I'm not a Ramirez fan either, but Sandoval is on par for an average season by him; he's what the Sox paid for thus far. The problem with him is he's only a real asset once you get into October, and you guys won't.

That GM is a fool to realistically enter a season with Bucholtz as an Ace. He's simply not. He's a 3rd guy on a good team.
