God, Ecuador is just so damned dirty....

Of course, I was just thinking that assuming the US hangs on to this it matters not one bit since everyone is suspended and Argentina will destroy them in any event. Still, fun game tonight.

If the US pulls through it's still an accomplishment to make the semi-finals. And hey, Argentina isn't in the semi's yet. Kind of a technicality, but still.

And to the semi's we go!!!

To be fair this is only the 4th time we've played in the tournament.  It's a CONMEBOL tournament, CONCACAF teams need to be invited.

Rumors of permanently merging this tournament with the Gold Cup are pretty exciting though.

Did not know that. Thank you for letting me know.

Making the semi's 2 out of the 4 tournaments is something to be proud of.

And yes, a merger of the 2 would be great.

Ireland are not very good.

I hope we don't make it to the final, been drinking 11 hrs straight, don't feel drunk yet even but I've come at a stage where my hole body says I had enough.

Thank you Chile.  This has been very enjoyable to watch.  6 nil 84'

My mistake, 7 nil.

I don't know. I enjoyed Germany pounding Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup. What made it better was the location. The World Cup was in Brazil.

Argentina is by far the better team. Team USA will be missing 3 starters in the matchup. But there's always a chance. Anyone remember the US upsetting number 1 in the world Spain 2-0 in the 2009 Confederations Cup semi-final? Granted, things are different today. The US was ranked number 9 in 2009. Right now Argentina is number 1 and the US sits at a disappointing number 31. But hey, the game has to be played. You just never know....

No European or South American country gives a about that.   It was a fantasy of Blatter and should be abolished right away.

Yeah, Spain didn't care about losing a 35 match unbeaten streak to the US of A.

This one's gonna hurt...

I mean honestly. Brad Guzan.... Ugh.

He looked like a deer in headlights. He could've came out and made an attempt to knock the ball away.

Argentina is simply incredible. In complete control. Little possession time for the US.

He had two options. Either charge out as hard as he could and take the ball/man/whatever, or stay on his damn line to prevent exactly what happened when he aimlessly wandered out with no real purpose and got chipped.

Bonus points to Kyle Beckerman for ball watching with impunity as well.

If this game doesn't end 5-0 and the US actually at some point manages to string three passes together I'll be amazed.

Iceland is a country near the top of the world with a population of only 331,918 (CIA Factbook), that is basically just a little rocky mass of cooled lava, and yet they are poised to make the knockout round of the Euro Cup.  Only Austria stands in their way.

GO ICELAND !!!

I don't know anything about soccer but this is like Gretzky-era Oilers vs a lower tier AHL team.

This analogy is more accurate than you think. We simply we can't field a team full of guys playing in a third-rate league (MLS) and hope to compete against sides where every player plays in top leagues (England, Germany, Spain, Italy). We played a front-6 of all MLS guys in this one. That won't beat an Argentina. Ever.

You are correct. When your best players only have to give 80% effort to have success in the MLS how can one expect improvement or to have a greater sense of what it takes to compete w/ the best in the world. MLS should be for young players trying to gain a little experience, players in need of a job and players nearing the end of their careers. Players w/ hopes to play for our country should be attempting to make it in the top leagues in Europe. Until then performances like these will continue to be the norm.

Well, Portugal managed to play for a draw and advanced, but finished behind Iceland, which played for a win.

Take that, Ronaldo.
