Huckleberry Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 When was the last time that a European football powerhouse broke the bank on a transfer of a US, or Canadian, national footballer. The grass root level of skill development in NA is just not there yet. It's getting better, but not quite there. The US and Canadian national football programs should be putting in the $ to make it happen, but where do they get that $? I don't think Barca ... has scouts all over NA searching for the next Messi. Pretty sure a team like Barca has scouts everywhere, thing is for NA players to break through they would have to start out in competitions like , Portugal, belgium, netherlands, greece, turkey. Those are the leagues right under the big 5 but you have to be willing to take take less money first for that to happen. Unless you are an absolute talent and the next messi or ronaldo offcourse.

DR HOLLIDAY Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Canada - avoiding international controversy since 1867 Unless we take the Bills……. I don't want the Bills to move, no city deserves to lose its team, especially Buffalo.
Two or less Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 OK. http://www.cbc.ca/sp...p-bid-1.2727500 That's rich, I say. Really rich. And even more reason why they desperately need a mega stadium in Toronto.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted August 6, 2014 Author Report Posted August 6, 2014 Canada was at the World Cup in 1986, thank you very much….. Correct. And that is why I agree with 11 on this. Unless, of course the national team program really turns it up a notch, or 20.
LastPommerFan Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 The odds of a country of 34M creating a great national team program while it's 500 best athletes all play hockey is pretty slim I'd imagine. Canada has a bigger (proportionally) "the best athletes play a different sport" problem than even the US.

Canada has a bigger (proportionally) "the best athletes play a different sport" problem than even the US. Can't be more than 496 out of top 500. Pretty sure there's a couple of bouncy ball players from Canada, a couple of MLB'ers, and of course, the best Canadian athlete of all, Johnny T.
It Figures Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 Canada - avoiding international controversy since 1867 Speaking of Canada. http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/story/players-threaten-lawsuit-over-artificial-surfaces-at-2015-womens-world-cup-080514 Shame on FIFA, first of all. I'm also disappointed that Canada would plan to host a World Cup with artificial turf fields. I've been to the Sahlen's facility in Rochester for several games ... it is a very different (inferior) game when the ball is skidding across the turf than when it's making its way over natural grass.

Quick Wikisearch reveals 20 in MLB, 6 NBA, and Johnny T.

I had no idea we were not replacing the artificial turf with real grass. Boycott!! ===== EDIT TO ADD: I thought that BMO Field in Toronto added a grass pitch a few years ago and I was right. http://bmofield.com/about/stadium-history/ So, unless I am out to lunch on this, some of the WC matches will be played in Toronto. It's a day later and I am still so miffed about this! I had thought the same thing about Toronto as a host city, but when I went to price tickets for the soccer lovers in my house I found that the closest venue to Buffalo is Montreal. I am not sure why Toronto's not among the host cities. They must have something else big going on in the summer of 2015.

Thought he would take one more kick at a Euro since France is hosting in 2016.
