dEnnis the Menace Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Mickey Ziggy Salty Slizz  :clapping: well done.
LastPommerFan Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Grigorenko Girgensons Sulzer I don't give a F WB, Boston has killed your soul. You need to get out. Mickey Ziggy Salty Slizz Nice, I went with Gus for Mr. Girgensons. How about Fizz for #52 as in Plop Plop Fizz Fizz If we do end up signing the other Alexander, we can do something with "Relief is just a swallow away"...

shrader Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Oh great, I started up the nickname discussion again. I'm starting to understand angry 11.
That Aud Smell Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Navy Seal training all week? Huh. Seems like mngt knows the boys need some mental training. I think they brought in the Seals to teach discipline and team building, not toughness. But everyone is in bitch and complain about everything mode so carry on. I really see it as more of a "look how lucky you are" type of training. These guys have to do this kind of stuff for a living and you have the chance to play hockey. i heard foligno on GR this morning. based on what he said, it sounds like LGR has it about right in terms of what the organization hopes to achieve with the SEALS' involvement -- he did not talk about the physical stuff so much as he talked about lessons on teamwork, accountability, believing in and relying on one other, etc. i sorta like it.

Weave Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Oh, and oreo is the dumbest nickname of all time. I was trying to be polite but, this. In spades. Mickey Ziggy Salty Slizz Better than Oreo.
nfreeman Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 nfreeman, love the new avatar, and I know that's the plan and hope you're right. Thanks. I'm pleased to report that my son picked out the avatar. As for the team, I inevitably find myself optimistic this time of year. But I also think there's quite a bit to be optimistic about, including: - I think Ennis and Hodgson have a ton of potential as the top 2 centers and are likely to represent a big step up from the past few years of TC and Roy (and, for half of last year, Roy and no one) as the top 2. - I think Stafford (if he's still on the team), Leino and, most importantly, Miller are statistically likely to have much better years than they had last year. - I think the team overall is statistically likely to have better luck with injuries than last year. - I'm really looking forward to seeing the effect of Roy-for-Ott. - There's probably a 50% chance that a highly skilled FNG in Griggy forces his way into the top 9 and adds a dynamic new element to the offense. This year is going to be better than last year. I can feel it. I am with you, I am worried about this roster going into this year because we are low on goal scorers and high on not much else. Ennis, Pominville, Vanek, Stafford and Hodgson most hopefully is the extent of goal scoring and thats roughly 80-100 goals if we are lucky. Where are the other 150 or so coming from? Some will come from the defense and some will come from the other 2 lines but thats a lot of ground to make up. another 30 goal scorer would go a long way to ease that pressure. The issue is the young guys. Oreo, Ziggy, Armia, and even Foligno. Are they ready? when will they be ready? What will they do and how soon? I can't answer these questions but Darcy if I know him, will not go out and pay for someone like Ryan or Nash if he thinks that as soon as this year and most likely next year, he could have 2 or so players that can put up 20 goals and 60 pts. Its been 41 years and I understand why ppl do not want to wait longer. Sadly my gut tells me that next season will be better and that we must weather another season of struggle. I only hope that the young players prove me wrong. I'm thinking Ennis, Pommer, Vanek, Stafford and Hodgson are going to contribute closer to 130 goals. As for the young guys, best not to count on them just yet. Especially Armia, who's yet to play a minute in North America. i heard foligno on GR this morning. based on what he said, it sounds like LGR has it about right in terms of what the organization hopes to achieve with the SEALS' involvement -- he did not talk about the physical stuff so much as he talked about lessons on teamwork, accountability, believing in and relying on one other, etc. i sorta like it. Derrico Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 I to will be patient. I understand why those who have been around to watch more sabres hockey over the last 41yrs are not willing to be patient. I see a plan, it is just that that plan involves developing Grigorenko, Girgenson, Ennis, Armia, Myers, Hodgson, Foligno and waiting until they hit their prime. 2-3 yrs from now I could see us winning a cup but I doubt that this year unless some very special players come forth from the prospects. I can get on board with us being legit contenders in 2-3 years. I think our management jumped the gun last year when bringing in a guy like Rehghr. We're still a couple years away. I've always thought that in a salary cap era, you have to have good young players who are still on their entry level deals playing at a high level. If we can have a few of our top guys playing with a low salary in two years, it will allow DR to pay a little more to bring in another good scorer and add toughness this offseason and specifically next without having to worry too much about salary cap issues. The only problem with this thought is will Miller still be playing at a high enough level to win the cup and/or will have Enroth shown that he is capable of helping us to the finals in two or three years.
shrader Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 As for the young guys, best not to count on them just yet. Especially Armia, who's yet to play a minute in North America. The reports state over and over that he will be required to spend one more year in Finland. So in terms of this season, it doesn't matter whether or not he's NHL ready.

So in terms of this season, it doesn't matter whether or not he's NHL ready. Best I can tell, the mandatory service is 6 months for people like Armia. so theoretically he could be available for Buff/Roch in December.
TrueBlueGED Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Listening to Hockey Hotline this morning, Ruff said they expect Ennis to eat Roy's all-situation minutes and want to keep Hodgson around the 17 minute mark. Eventually something's gotta give with the bottom-6 center position. Maybe they're waiting until after D-camp to assess how ready Grigorenko is, and thus, if they should target a 3rd or 4th line guy?
LaFontaineToMogilny Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Best I can tell, the mandatory service is 6 months for people like Armia. so theoretically he could be available for Buff/Roch in December. If military service in Finland is even remotely similar to the Scandinavian countries, Military Service for Armia could be done in a couple of weeks of 'token service' if he has a professional sports contract, alternatively be put off all together until after he retires from sports.
Weave Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Best I can tell, the mandatory service is 6 months for people like Armia. so theoretically he could be available for Buff/Roch in December. I think he is still under contract with his pro team over there.
MattPie Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 All right, WB, you can create nicknames for everyone. Start with this list: Zemgus Girgensons The Grand Zemgus (Is it pronounced zmay-gus?) http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Grand_Nagus The ears kinda fit, at least.
LastPommerFan Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 I think he is still under contract with his pro team over there. 100% Certain that could be worked out if we wanted...$$$$$?...no?...$$$$$$$$?...$$$$$$$$$$?
TrueBlueGED Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 100% Certain that could be worked out if we wanted...$$$$$?...no?...$$$$$$$$?...$$$$$$$$$$? I look at it this way: If December rolls around and we're trying to pry Armia out of Finland...that does not speak well on the season to that point. I'm excited about his talent level, but let him develop his game over there for another year. For all of his ability, he still needs to develop his play without the puck and work on his consistency. Let him stay, hope he can make the team out of camp in 2013, and if not, a few months in Rochester isn't the worst thing in the world.
Weave Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 100% Certain that could be worked out if we wanted...$$$$$?...no?...$$$$$$$$?...$$$$$$$$$$? there are IIHF rules regarding this. I do not know what the rules are.
Taro T Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 If military service in Finland is even remotely similar to the Scandinavian countries, Military Service for Armia could be done in a couple of weeks of 'token service' if he has a professional sports contract, alternatively be put off all together until after he retires from sports. Although listening to a Finn speak you'd swear they come from somewhere near Korea, they are in fact Scandinavians.
LastPommerFan Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 there are IIHF rules regarding this. I do not know what the rules are. Not quite. This transaction would be governed by a separate transfer agreement between the NHL and certain European Leagues: http://www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/news/news-singleview/browse/1/recap/4869.html?tx_ttnews%5BpS%5D=1280613600&tx_ttnews%5BpL%5D=2678399&tx_ttnews%5Barc%5D=1&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=187&cHash=a62c8b14ad Since a few countries chose not to engage in an international transfer agreement between Europe and the NHL, the national associations and leagues from Finland, Germany and Sweden signed separate player transfer agreements with the NHL according to the same principle as the previous international agreement: NHL teams can sign any player, even if under contract, but the NHL pays a development contribution of 225,000 dollars per player. Can he even play hockey while on Military Training? i want him in Rochester as soon as is possible. He'll grow more in the AHL and get accustomed to North America prior to coming up to the big club.
spndnchz Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Just got back from Camp. I can say nothing like the atmosphere at Dwyer. :( Armia and Grigorenko are definitely the biggest forwards there. I was thinking what a big difference between him and Roy. They ran 3-4 drills in each group, then some 4 on 4 hockey and then a shootout. Each Group had 5 pucks at the blueline to put past the goalie to win. If you got a goal you could shoot again, if not you put the puck on the blueline for the next guy. In the second group Grigorenko shot first. Goal. Second attempt, goal. Third attemp, goal. He got stopped on the last one. Pysyk looked good. Fast, had hands. Seemed to make a quick decision whether to skate it up ice or pass right away. Troop took out McCabe (I think) along the boards with a huge hit. Foligno was throwing his weight around too. He hit Grigorenko once pretty hard along the boards. Girgensons is no where near Grigorenko IMO. D4rk, Guggenberger was in the second group. He's the one that let in the 3 in row shootout goals. Other than that he looked REAL good. All the goalie were very tall. Seemed like their waists were at crossbar height.

What do you think, Grigorenko stays in Buffalo this year? Who did you think was the best goalie there? Guggenberger is the oldest and has the most pro experience, so I'd expect him to look pretty good. They sure like him down in Texas.
