Round one Pick #14. Girgensons

I think it is probably true that Zemgus will get the long shot chance to make the team this season. He will have to be lights out top form. He was on Hockey Hotline mentioning how he'll probably get in a day or so before the rookie camp. Just sounds like more of the usual way of dealing with draft picks unlike the Mikhail press conference. I would think no matter the team all GMs love when a kid is going to college since they get bonus time to see them develop and sign them.

If Girgenson chooses not to go to Vermont and is not ready for the NHL, can he play in the AHL this season? It doesn't sound right, but I have seen mention of this in other places.

I believe he can play in the AHL, based on what I was reading around the web.

Yes he can play for the AHL because he played for the USHL.

I'm not aware of very many, if any, cases where that actually happens though. When a college kid decides to change course immediately after drafting, it is usually the NHL team convincing him to go to major junior instead.

I think it's exceedingly rare to happen, and even rarer to be successful. I can't name a single player that went that path and became a good-great NHLer. I think the best place for him is major junior since he'd get used to playing a long season, but Vermont would be fine too since he's guaranteed heavy minutes and would have plenty of time off-ice to physically develop. As exciting as it would be for Rochester fans, I honestly think the AHL is the worst place for him to be.

I'm not sold on which is the best option between major junior and college. They do get that extended schedule up north, but the college season does off competition against much older and more physically developed opponents. I really don't know what the Sabres philosophy is here. They haven't had high end college prospects since Vanek and Stafford and both wound up staying in college for a year. That was a while ago though, so who knows if the team still looks at it that way.

Hard to say; his former coach was quoted in a few articles as saying he's definitely physically read to play in the AHL, so maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing. As excited as I am about seeing this kid play for the Sabres, I think him making the NHL team right away would be bad since he's unlikely to get as much playing time with the Sabres (and the huge adjustment in schedule).

I agree! I think Oreo is much more ready than Girgs. I don't think a year or two even at UVM would hurt.

Somebody is lying about their height based on that picture. There's no way Girgensons is 6' 2" if Grigorenko is 6' 3".

We need them to be bookend'd by Gerbe and Myers for ground truth..

I would love to see him in the NHL, but short of that let him go to Vermont

UVM and Burlington are amazingly beautiful and a truly special space (spent quite a bit of time there myself) and he will develop both as a person and a hockey player. That's the thing about the NHL draft: these kids won't pay off for a couple of years at least, unlike the NFL draft where in 2 years you're a star or a bust as a 1st rounder.

I just watched his interview after the scrimmage yesterday. Sounds to me that DR is going to offer him a contract by how he defers the question 2 or 3 times about what his intentions are with Vermont.

To be fair I think Darcy is being pretty honest, Girg has said that it's up to him, whatever his heart tells him. Darcy will offer him a contract but not try and persuade him. Thats what I've read into it.

I was thinking the same thing, just pointing it out was all.

Really glad to see this.

I know there is the development camp thread, so apologies if this would be better suited there. But one thing I'm interested in from those who attended - based on d-camp, who do you think was more NHL-ready: Girgensons or Grigorenko? I've heard differing opinions and I'm interested in what the experts here have to say.

Great news. As Lindy said, he's got the physical maturity to handle the position. And while there's a lot to be said for experiencing college life and what it has to offer, he wasn't going to grow too much as a hockey player at that level.

GO SABRES!!!

There is a long line of prospects I've fallen for in the past 30 years.

Gus is certainly in the club.

Was thinking the same thing. So many over the years and the vast majority never amounted to much, if anything. But I don't remember one who was still blocking shots in a game his team lost 14-0.

An update.....Girgs to sign with the Sabres.

Wow.

I haven't seen the kid at all, but it sure sounds like he is burning to play in the NHL.

I hope he makes it, both for the Sabres' sake and for his own. Turning down a college scholarship (which is now worth $50K+ per year in the short term and much more in the long term) is inherently a risky move.

They better sign Grigorenko shortly or else I could see this convincing him to ship off back home to the KHL.

I assume you are being at least partially tongue-in-cheek with this?
