They don't generally give the kids a choice of number.

The only time I can think of a team assigning numbers would be when they have a massive amount of non roster players in a camp (rookie camps and such). Heck if I remember right they even asked Kaleta what number he wanted

I'll admit right here and now, I have concerns about how well Lindy meshes with this kid. But damn it sure is nice to hear about elite level talent coming to Buffalo.

It's a legitimate concern about Lindy, but this makes me hopeful (sorry can't figure out how to do quotes in Safari mobile):

"When he was asked to give the reasons why he should be taken first overall instead of the consensus number one prospect, Nail Yakupov of the Sarnia Sting, Grigorenko said he'd already practiced his answer to the question.

"Edmonton asked me this question," he said with a smile. "They asked me, me or Yakupov? I said Yakupov is an amazing player, and for sure it depends on them, but I can say that I'm a player who can play with the team, I'm a team player. I will do everything the coach will tell me to do."

ESPN's Grant Sonier thinks Grigs can play in the NHL next year: http://insider.espn....rst-round-picks

(Insider article, but the part about Buffalo is in the free first few paragraphs.)

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't end up in a Sabres' uni this season. He and the broken Russian C that went to the Habs were the 2 guys on my 'wish list.' That they didn't have to drop the 21 pick to move up to a spot to get one of them was fantastic.

The Sabres do their numbering system like old school, you are given a number until youve proved it, then you can change. However, for some reason they went away from it for a while... Derek Roy and Jason Pominville were 9 and 29 their entire careers. Rip Simonick is responsible to give numbers away, and i once read he saw Kaleta in practice one day and he reminded him of Matt Barnaby, and after practice he asked Kaleta if he would be ok to wear #36. So Kaleta didnt ask for it, but was offered it as respect.

See I recall the story going Kaleta was asked what number he wanted and he didnt have a prefernce so Rip having seen him running players a bit to hard for a simple scrimmage threw him number 36 and said I think this number fits

also the only times I recall any sabres in the past 15 years changing numbers was because the one they had wanted was taken and was now available or they had a number and felt they needed a change in their luck so switched numbers

So what the hell are the guys on the team going to call this guy? Grigsie? Grigger? With the language barrier and all, I'm not sure he'll know they are referring to him. :D

I just worry about taking an 18/19 year old kid and jumping him all the way to the NHL. Clearly it worked for Tyler Myers, but that is the exception. But, maybe he will prove to be too good to keep off the roster in training camp!

Cant he play up to 10 NHL games before the Sabres have to make a decision? If so that might well be the way I'd do things.

Yes, and if he shows up healthy and ready to play, he will have his shot at those 10 games.

Edit: I just watched his interview/scrum on sabres.com. Really like his answers to his questions and he seems like a bit of a joker based on some of his answers.

i sense that the russians often deliver unusual nicknames -- malkin is "gino" after all. i'm thinking he might get "grigo" (GREE-go).

as for the latvian kid, i take it that his nickname will riff of of this first name. because his first name is awesome.

I can see Zemmie or less original Gus.

well after seeing this draft I would say Darcy hit the G spot for once.

Obviously I was a Faksa fan but I like that we didn't have to give up anything and we landed Grigorenko. He sounds extremely happy to play for us and pissed that 11 teams thought he had issues which it seems may have been simply health stuff. Either way I can't wait to see a kid compared to Malkin suit up for the Sabres. I hope he is as good as ppl say. Darcy did great i this draft.
