Sabres Fan in NS Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Whatever ... Do they really think people will pay for their on-line sports shlock by the likes of Bucky and Sully ... ?
spndnchz Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 My parents get the paper, I'll just use their online code.
IKnowPhysics Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 ###### THAT! Horrible. I'm not in the subscription area, and $2.49 a week for digital only is absolutely ridiculous.
spndnchz Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Whatever ... Do they really think people will pay for their on-line sports shlock by the likes of Bucky and Sully ... ? All the links via twitter, etc are free access.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 All the links via twitter, etc are free access. I've heard a lot about this twitter thing ... no idea what it's for or how to use it ... me = old.
SDS Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 All the links via twitter, etc are free access. Where did see this? Since twitter can be accessed on your desktop this seems to be a large loophole.
dEnnis the Menace Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 From a business prospective, I can see why they are doing it, but it sucks lol. I'll just use my grandparents subscription to the actual paper to get whatever I need to access the online stuff.
inkman Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Rochester D & C doing same thing. They can suck it.
X. Benedict Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Wow. Waiting to see how this works out. I can't imagine advertisers will like this very much. Why would I advertise in a medium that was restricted to digital subscribers?
spndnchz Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Where did see this? Since twitter can be accessed on your desktop this seems to be a large loophole. I think it was Harrington that said it.
TrueBlueGED Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 So wait, they want to charge almost as much as the New York Times ($10 v $15)? The Buffalo freakin' News? Seriously? Yea, I'm sure that'll fix their dropping subscription problem
Doohicksie Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 So I won't read the local perspective on my hometown teams anymore, I guess.
TrueBlueGED Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 So I won't read the local perspective on my hometown teams anymore, I guess. In fairness, it's not like you had to actually read it to know what was going to be said ;)
X. Benedict Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Let me be the first to write it: The Buffalo "Pay-Per"-Snooze.
Weave Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I won't read it anymore. Too many other free sources for the same info.
biodork Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I've heard a lot about this twitter thing ... no idea what it's for or how to use it ... me = old. lol same here I won't read it anymore. Too many other free sources for the same info. And THIS.
Eleven Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 It's the only way the paper can survive. I need access to the News for more than sports, so looks like I'm buying a subscription. It's fair.
dudacek Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 If any paper can provide information you cant get elsewhere, then it is worth paying for. Unfortunately for the news, Bucky and Jerry never break anything and their insights are utterly predictable. Harrington and Vogl are press release stenographers and microphone holders. In his time Tim Graham was worth paying for. FWIW, $10 is hardly a large investment.
darksabre Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 The only good thing the Buffalo News ever had was Tom Toles cartoons.
Eleven Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 The only good thing the Buffalo News ever had was Tom Toles cartoons. No love for Bruce Shanks? Pulitzer. And Adam Zyglis (not sure about spelling) is all right, too.
notwoz Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Personally, I don't see the fuss is all about. The subscription plan the News outlined is heardly a budget buster. At $2.49 a week, we talking about $129.48 a year. The Margaret Sullivan column says that if you subscribe to the Sunday News for $1.99 a week, they'll throw in a digital subscription. That's $103.48 a year. (Don't live in the area? Tell 'em to send the paper to your favorite watering hole, the county jail, or just throw it into the freaking dumpster). She also says you get 10 free looks even without a subscription. To be quite frank, $104 to $130 a year is simply no big deal. Personally, I ask myself what smokes cost. They're $5 or so here in Va. so I just have to smoke 10 fewer cigarettes a week to break even. I think I can do that -- and maybe I'll be able to eventualy free myself from that filthy addiction. If you don't like the newspaper, then don't subscribe. If you want Buffalo area news, you'll subscribe. Personally, I like to see what's going on in the old stomping grounds. So I will fork over the money. Like I said, it's no big deal.

For a lot of out-of-towners, maybe not those in NoVa, $100 annually to read it is kind of a big deal. There are a lot of posters in their twenties and early thirties here, and that's real money at a certain age. At another certain age, or if one is just lucky enough to have the right career/job/whatever at an early age, it's not a big deal. I can understand some of the disappointment--and I'm happy it's not vitriol--from folks who don't live in Buffalo. I'm also glad that there's a person like you who will subscribe to see what's going on here. I wouldn't do the same with the Post, even though I lived in DC (proper DC, not NoVa, sir!) for 7. (It's just not home, and it's just not that important, as great a paper as it is.) But as above, I need the News for other reasons, and I've been leeching for about seven years. So it's finally time to pay. Fine. As long as the content is delivered electronically and in an easy-to-access manner, and as long as I don't have to throw out ("recycle") a few pounds of paper every week, I'm in.
