Eleven Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 I am ready to kill. I've seen about two second-round games and one third-round game, and even that one, in part and not in whole. As in the CT thread from eight days ago, work has been life for a little while. So, I come home, a couple of whiskies in the belly (and I do mean a couple, not three or four) and a small bag with some Chinese take-out (Friday is my day to do whatever I want) and there is NO hockey?! It's freaking Friday night, and there's nothing. NOTHING. Both series are for tomorrow afternoon, when normal people are either (1) grabbing some sun (that's me between noon and 2; I can work later); (2) spending time with family; (3) mowing lawns or otherwise workin' the land; or (4) doing other stuff that is not related to watching hockey. It's a sunny late-spring afternoon across Canada and the northern US, and apparently, the league planned that we would spend it inside. What the f*ck? So, so stupid. And I'll be outside tomorrow for the Rags game and in my office for the other one. So again, so, so stupid.
Eleven Posted May 19, 2012 Author Report Posted May 19, 2012 Memorial Cup is on tonight.... Millbank, thank you. I can't stand NBA basketball, and while I've got a decent book going, I really just wanted to chill and watch some hockey tonight. This isn't perfect, but it sure as hell beats the alternatives. Thanks again. EDIT: This actually is more entertaining than the second- and third-round games that I've kind of been able to watch once in a while. There's no clutch-and-grab, it's like real hockey. Almost like Olympic hockey. So thanks again.
millbank Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 you are right though. We get used to watching at least one game an evening if not two or three. Huge void. Edmonton Oil Kings lead Shawinagan by a goal late. 4 - 3. Sabre pick Mark Pysyk playing... Also tonight Oklahoma defeated Toronto Marlies 5 - 1, their series is now tied. A side note Buffalo Sabre Jason Pominville was a Shawinigan Cataract and up to this Memorial he has been working with Cataracts as they prepared for Memorial Cup.....
millbank Posted May 20, 2012 Report Posted May 20, 2012 Russia leading Slovakia 4 - 1 after two at World Championship Gold Medal Game. Interesting OV, Soymen, Malkin together. Malkin scores to make 6 - 2 . Russia wins World Hockey Championship... Russia went 10 - 0 for entire tournament .

Stereotypical Russian comment: They win the tournament with minimal pressure...odds on them choking like dogs in Sochi? :P
millbank Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 St. John defeated Edmonton Oil Kings, 3 -2 tonight thus each of the four teams participating St. John, Edmonton, Shawinagan and London each have one win and one loss at Memorial Cup
RazielSabre Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 It did seem like a stupid decision to me I have to say. Very, very stupid.
Sabre Dance Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 Interesting to see that NBC is apparently doing the scheduling with the two afternoon games (so it doesn't have to pre-empt evening programming). On Saturday, I actually DVR'd the game and watched it at 8 PM since I was busy enjoying the beautiful weather in the afternoon. What's a Saturday night without Hockey Night in Canada? (Hockey Early Afternoon in Canada just doesn't quite roll off the tongue....)
apuszczalowski Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 Stereotypical Russian comment: They win the tournament with minimal pressure...odds on them choking like dogs in Sochi? :P Exactly, wait til its a tournament that the rest of the world, besides Europe, cares about
millbank Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/story/?id=396507 World Championships are used to decide nation grouping for Olympics, The United States will be grouped with Russia and Slovakia plus a qualifier team, Canada will be grouped with Finland, Norway and Qualifier. Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland comprise the third group. In Olympics the top two teams in each group , plus the next highest move on to quarter finals. Canada seems happy with seeding, U.S in a little tougher... perhaps...

If the Cold War were still raging, the US-Russia grouping would be amazing. As is, I still think it will carry some significance.
millbank Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 Tonight at Memorial Cup, St. John defeated host Shawinnigan 4 - 1. This means The London Knights will go directly into Championship final game, St. John will play winner of tie breaker game between Shawinnigan and Edmontion Oil Kings in semi final, the winner of semi final to play London Knights in final.
