Fire Lindy Ruff NOW Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012   1) I don't even know how to address your Ennis comments 2) Campbell is certainly not a number 1 defense man. He's a second line pairing. 3) He didn't ONLY want to play for Buffalo, he wanted a pay raise, one which in my opinion wasn't warranted here. Good for him for getting it elsewhere, but fact is, with his playing style, he was on the decline. 1. i think you get it.2. he a muber one scoring d man, thats what i meant. 3. your probly right, but i liked mckee, he wasnt a jerk he played for us forever i dunno. i guess i just really miss that 05-06 team thats never coming back. blah.
RazielSabre Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 The point I'm trying to argue is that they weren't that bad of moves then or in hindsight. Compared to other massive mistakes listed here, these two really don't come close. McKee never had and never would play a full season in the NHL. St. Louis had even labeled him as fragile by the time he was shown the door there, something I don't think we'd have called him. Leaving when he did was for the best: watching him decline so rapidly would have been hard for any of his fans. He was old, slow and broken. At least we didn't feel obligated to give Rivet a free pass for it. But Jay would probably have gotten one. As for Campbell, he hasn't been a number one on any team since Buffalo, but he got paid like it. I'm glad Buffalo didn't make that mistake. And as someone else mentioned, we got Ennis out of it. I'd say we won that trade by a mile. His been a hugely important piece on a couple of teams, his no Myers but lets not sell him short. Guys turned into a damn good player, one we couldn't have afforded.
otis Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 One that I never understood: Leaving gritty defenseman Lee Fogolin exposed to the expansion draft in 1979 and then watching him lift Cups in Edmonton during the 1980s. Otis

Guys turned into a damn good player, one we couldn't have afforded. I think that's a good assessment. The Hawks could have used him this year, and FLA wouldn't have been as good without him.
drnkirishone Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 however Campbell has not been good on the level that he is being paid. I like Soupy and wish he was still a sabres but the contract he signed was a horrible contract one that was a direct reason for the BHawks getting dissassembled that following offseason
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Darcy did better than pick Briere up off waivers, he got rid of Gratton at the same time. ;) Your premise is basically a reverse look at Muckler's tenure in Buffalo. His teams when given carte blanche were serious underachievers. When he had to stay within a budget, he built a nice little team. I am tired. I forgot the trade. Briere was on waivers before that. OK....new submission....putting Jason Pominville on waivers. :o I have come to the conclusion that it will do no good under this ownership to bring up the past. They are bunkered down and all that can be done is to look at it starting Feb of '11. I don't agree, but that's what we're stuck with and I will honor the current bitchfest concensus.
drnkirishone Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 OK....new submission....putting Jason Pominville on waivers. :o I am not understanding how this ranks anywhere on the list. We didn't lose him ever single team passed on him.......
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 I am not understanding how this ranks anywhere on the list. We didn't lose him ever single team passed on him....... You can bang 7 hookers in Haiti without a rubber and come out clean, but it doesn't make it a good move.
drnkirishone Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 You can bang 7 hookers in Haiti without a rubber and come out clean, but it doesn't make it a good move. how good looking are this Haiti hookers? on the finger scale that is.

Otis Nice call. This deserves further study before I figure out which moves make it to the tournament.

dudacek Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 In no particular order, some that you've missed: Drafting Jiri Dudacek in the 1st. Giving up McKegney, Savard, Frankie Sauve, & a 3rd for Cloutier & a 1st (Creighton). I was in high school and under the mistaken belief that Scotty Bowman was infallible when he made the Cloutier trade. That was the turning point. Every single player we gave up was better than Buddy straight across. To give up all three was a travesty. And to top it off, Bowman despised Cloutier — rode him mercilessly as a Nord and even more as a Sabre. It's almost like he acquired him to to ruin his career. And as a final kick in the nuts, the only thing Creighton ever did for Buffalo was turn into two OK seasons of Rick Vaive. As for Dudacek, I gotta say I'm a little hurt...
Sabres Fan in NS Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Happy May Day everyone. May 1st always makes me think of two things ... The fancy and well-organized parades in Red Square and Brad's goal. Nice thread Eleven. I realize you want player moves, so ... As Punch said the Sabres on the whole have not been very "smart". While there have been some really good moves there also have been some real stinkers. I have a tie for worst player moves IMHO. Firstly ... not bringing in depth on defense at the deadline, or at any other time, in 05/06. That was the year the Sabres had possibly their best chance at the cup. And Secondly (not surpirisingly DeLuca and I agree :flirt: ) ... not signing Peca. Forget about the trade and who it brought in the damage was done by not signing Peca. TrueBluePhD brough up management ... The worst move by the Sabres management wise, IMHO, was bringing in the most successful coach ever not as coach, but as GM. Scotty should have been brough in as coach only, but he probably would not have agreed to that, as he wanted to be GM somewhere at that point. There was a reason he was not GM in Montreal, or anyplace else for that matter. Can you imagine the rioting in Montreal if, as GM, he had traded away any of their star players for draft picks ... the city would have burned. ----- On another note. I am working through my issues with certain posts by certain posters. It is true what they say about time healing all wounds, but I am not there yet. I don't expect the board members at large to understand my issues, as Eleven states most people on the board, or not, can't really grasp it. And that is OK. Maybe I will be back in the fall ready for another exciting season of Sabres hockey. Then again, maybe not. Enjoy the summer everyone. Hopefully the draft and free-agency will work out well for the Sabres. For what it's worth I am off the TSC thing, if I was ever really on it. For the sake of all Sabre fans I just hope they do well and hopefully, one day, win that cup. Take good care everyone and cherish all that is good in your life. ERW
dEnnis the Menace Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Happy May Day everyone. <snip> ERW Hey, it's good to see you back in any form. I agree with your assessment on the worst management move. Scotty doing both was a mistake. Hope everything is well!

Claude_Verret Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 Some really good bad moves cited so far. This one didn't turn out too well for us either. Trading for Real Cloutier and a 1st (Adam Creighton) for McKegney, Savard and JF Sauve. Someone else mentioned taking Ric Seiling 14th overall, right before Mike Bossy at 15!!!
tom webster Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 OK, new, new submission. Putting Dom on waivers twice. :o :o ;) OK, I remember exposing him in the expansion draft, don't remember putting him on waivers twice.
shrader Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 This thread, specifically the Hasek stuff, has me wishing we could get other teams' boards to do the same thing and then compile a master list. That stuff would be entertaining.
Taro T Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 OK, I remember exposing him in the expansion draft, don't remember putting him on waivers twice.  Sorry, exposing him twice. They never had him on waivers.
otis Posted May 1, 2012 Report Posted May 1, 2012 GREAT avatar Otis! Is that the original LP? Yes it is, Mike. Great version of "Workin' on a Chain Gang" on that album, complete with the "Ooh"/ "Aaahs" - which I always thought was a nod to the "Sabres on the Warpath" chant. Cheers, Otis

Claude_Verret Posted May 2, 2012 Report Posted May 2, 2012 Giving up McKegney, Savard, Frankie Sauve, & a 3rd for Cloutier & a 1st (Creighton). Oops, missed this on first pass, but I remember hating that trade so much as a young Sabres fan that it deserved to be mentioned twice,
