I think this may be a year of more change than we expect. It is just the gut instinct ? I would not be surprised to see four or five 4mill plus guys go in addition to Hecht and Boyes. That would make a number of "fans" happy until they have to live through a five or six year rebuilding process and then realize you are not going to get an elite player to come here willingly. But they will all be happy with all that cap room.

I did not have Boyes and Hecht, in mind when i said that. I assumed they were already gone. The 4 + guys are Miller, Roy, Vanek, Regher,Pom, Stafford, Leino.. Then there is the list of other guys they have to deal with, offer wise, next year.Foremost on that list is Regher and Ennis.

You are so far off base with this its unbelievable.

We do not need to rebuild over 5-6years. Why?

1) We have a young core already in place an making waves. Ennis, Myers, Foligno ect.

2) Why trade Pommers? He is a 65pt a year forward who plays both ends and kills a lot of minutes. He also is our best forward.

3) Stafford gets 1 more year because he finally has a center and he has a shot to show he has what it takes.

4) Now Vanek, Regehr, Roy, and Miller. If you trade Vanek you can bring in Parise or you can use the picks to bring in something good or you can use the picks and draft (probably top 5 pick). Regehr will be gone after next season or be resigned as at a lower price for a couple of years. Roy will be gone because he no longer fits on this team and hes a freaking joke. We should rename him TC 2.0... That leaves Miller. If you feel Enroth is as good you can drop miller and again end up with a high draft pick or picks and a prospect or two.

5) What does this all add up to? It adds up to if you moved everything you want minus 2 players... you are better off in 2-3years not 5-6. Of course the BEST PART! If we had started this needed rebuild 4 years ago we would be 2 years away from your mythical 5-6year rebuild. Bet hell we have waited 42years why not wait 47 or if we don't rebuild at all we can wait another 42.

6) The Sabres need to do a partial rebuild now. Vanek, Roy, and 1 of our defensemen (Sekera/Leo/?) need to be moved prior to the Draft. We need to move up in the draft to take either Galchenyuk or Faksa. Joel Armia needs to pan out. Basically in 2 years we will have a completely different team with a new core and a couple of Vets (Pommers, Miller, Leino).

ps. Ennis won't be up for a new contract next year because I bet he gets a 3yr deal in the next 2months.

pss. I am going back on vacation.

... If management has any style, after announcing their decision on GM and coaching, they would ask the senior players one on one if they want to stay or go. If a player wants out you try to make the price fair to any interested parties and then fullfill their wish. Unhappy players are not good to have around. Remember Washington? You , management, have made your decision now let them make theirs. All one needs to do is ask. Would you not like to be a fly on that wall?

You've just described the very definition of the inmates running the asylum. Not a formula for success in any sport, let alone a professional one.

Nobody on any team in any sport in the history of all team sports has ever been happy about their situation for their entire career. Some are just more professional about it than others.

GO SABRES!!!

We are not that far away . You just did not take the time to read into it.My lsit of trades is larger than yours.. I agree with you move those guys now, especailly if they want out. What does keeping Regher, Leino, Roy, Stafford or a Miller for a year do for you if you are rebuilding if they want to go? You brought them here on a promise of being competitive, now you are rebuilding. If you rebuild from scratch you are five years away from remotely competitive, providing your management team knows what they are doing in putting the new team together,/ Parise fits perfectly , another small forward.Darcy will love him although I doubt they can get him in a competitive market but go for it..Trade the guys who want out now, get picks..because in the end it is picks that get you down the road not free agency when you are the Sabres and you rebuild from zero. A team rebuilding from zero does not need a Miller, Stafford, Vanek, or anyone else who does not want to stay? Those are guys you need when you are in compete mode.

What do you think Ennis is worth on the open market. You are his rep. Do you tell him to sign a darcy offer if it is too low or do you try and go to a contender by accepting a bigger offer sheet ? Darcy would have a hard time stepping on him like Tim Kennedy. I don't know but i know as agent i have to put it in front of him. When does he get his shot at the cup?A test of his IQ? you can learn from Vaneks experience of playing your prime on a team that will never contend. If i was Cody's agent i would do the same thing. I do feel bad for Pom. His career ends in a rebuilding era unless he gets out too..

Unlike you . I do not believe darcy and lindy can build a contender even when they start from zero with a huge cap.but thats a dicussion that happens five years down the road when the fans are once again screaming to unload the core .

I think I agree with what your saying...

  • He attributed Roy's lockerroom cleanout comments to the emotion of a prematurely ending season
  • The reaction was also directly related to the comments Ruff made in Philly.
  • He liked the fact players were upset and reacted emotionally
  • he regretted mentioning Regehr by name. He spoke with Robyn about it.
  • Ruff doesn't think he typically calls out players specifically by name too often
  • He isn't worried about his relationship with the players
  • With Vanek, his only concern was in regards to penalties committed out of frustration, which he praised Thomas for correcting
  • He agreeg and reiterated Ted Black's comments that the team needs to get tougher and harder
  • Cited Marcus Foligno and Corey Tropp as the type of players that fit the profile
  • He actually mentioned Joe Finley in direct response to a caller asking if an enforcer would have inhibited Lucic running Miller--- I wish there were a followup Q from Simon/White about Finley but there wasn't
  • Regarding moving the "Core" he said it's "obviously its a discussion we will have"
  • Didn't move Ennis to Center earlier because he was worried about defense

THIS is why I wanted a presser. Because of how I feel having read this. This is what postseason pressers are for. Glad they decided to have him at least do this.

Now, more about Finley, please!! :w00t:

Finley would have been Lucic's bitch

Horse dung.

To go after Lucic though, is a waste of time.

Someone does that to your goaltender, you put theirs through the end boards on the next shift.

Done.

I like the way you think.

While yes, you gotta show that you wont back down running Thomas is the single stupidest thing we could have done. Its about winning. We do what it takes to win, THAT is the priority. Having half our team suspended doesn't sound like a good start to me.

Plus Shanahan would have had a field day with us, the league would pin us as a shame to the league and we'd be considered in the same light as Sean Avery. Acting like an idiotic thug should be a thing of the past in the NHL.

The NHL missed the boat on the suspension massively and we should have been mentally tougher and far more physical but we weren't, screw what we should have done the team stopped believing in themselves. If you think smashing Thomas would have fixed that or made us seem 'not to be messed around with' I would say you are rather wrong.

Only if by "stupidest thing we could have done" you really meant "ensuring nobody runs our goalie," you are correct.

These aren't insults, they're serious questions: Are you kind of new to the game? Have you ever played hockey?

I ask because "the code" states that if somebody runs your guy, you gotta' run theirs so it doesn't happen again. And if you run somebody's goalie when yours hasn't been run, your goalie has to expect it back, and you live the with fact that you are responsible for your goalie getting lit up. It's kind of the hockey equivalent to the cold war era policy of Mutally Assured Destruction.

The most interesting thing to me was Ruff saying that trading Gaustad forced a new perspective and new lines. That new perspective resulted in better play. In other words, "my shortsighted, stubborn behavior caused me to not pursue other avenues."

He pretty much argued for a change in coaching.

Therefore, if he changes the way he coaches, I'll be pretty satisfied.

Jesus H. Christmas. Everybody still wanting Stafford gone....did you people not see how he plays with Ennis and Foligno??????????????????????? What the holy hell are you thinking? :wallbash:

My question for you and in my opinion is running Thomas may have resulted in a short term loss, but I disagree with you thinking that it would have been a long term loss. I have been in two semi-fights on the rink in my life and they were both the result of teams running my goaltender. The result, the team we were playing quit doing it.

I took shots at both players one after he slashed my goaltender and the other after one cross checked me protecting my goaltender. I kidney punched one, then dumped with a shoulder to the chest and purposesly fell on top of his teams defender. The other I ran dropping my shoulder and knocking him on his @$@# and then after a response slash, slashed back. Both quit it as I was ready to drop the gloves. Granted this was not the NHL, but the same general rules apply, meet force with at least equal if not overwhelming force in response and end it quickly. The Sabres did neither. Yes Lucic is a horse, but the Sabres need a few guys at the level.

In the 70s they had Schoenfeld, Korab and Geuvermont to name a few to deal with the Flyers, Bruins and Canadians. Now Foligno, Tropp and it appears McNabb are online. They still need another IMO with skills to. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

But if the Sabres keep acting like the French in WWII they will be relegated to being dominated by the Bruins.

Therefore, if he changes the way he coaches, I'll be pretty satisfied.

I here you on Staphy, but I don't trust it... I agree 1 more year, but the jury is still out. His inconsistency, at times soft play and disappearing act still bugs the hell out of me, .

so, first black goes on GR, and now the coach and GM ... all in lieu of a post-season presser.

local media types must have their underwear all in a wad.

and i don't know that i blame them. i am also not sure that i like the idea of a team controlling/dictating the way it interacts with the media ... but, then again, GR is allowing everyday fans to call in and pose questions.

whatever. i'm far more concerned with the product on the ice than i am with matters like this.

I understand the press guys being miffed. I actually appreciate the video they made in response to it all on the Sabres Edge blog. That was more valuable than a press conference.

All a bit of a fart in a mitten if you ask me.

Lucic is a horse yes.

In fact, Lucic is wasted on running a goaltender, he took a huge risk being suspended, and he would've been too vaulable to for the Bruins to lose, over something like this.

Now - Had Thomas been run first, the tables are turned entirely, and Lucic running Miller makes perfect sense, and any suspension handed out to him or any other Bruin, is a small price to pay for sending the message to the entire league :

"You run our goaltender, yours is leaving the game on a stretcher, make no mistake".

I guarantee - Had Thomas been run on the next shift, there's no ###### way Tootoo, or anyone else who value their goalie for that matter, ever tries running Miller.

Suspensions be damned, it's a message that carries through to the next season, and the next.

Anyone needing proof of this just need to go back and wtch Gomez take out Miller's leg, and Tallinder stand around and watch him crawl back into his crease.

Had Lundquist been run afterwards, no way Lucic, badass or not, even looks at Miller cross-eyed.

Now I only caught part of the interview but does anyone think that Joe Finley will be moved to Forward?? If hes to be an enforcer, I surely hope it isnt from his D position becasue he was a liability when he was up this year and also he is about our 9/10 d-man currently(tough to enforce from bench or Roch). McCormick wasnt nearly as effective this year compared to 10-11 but he is signed for a decent amount of $$. Thoughts??

Could we try and keep threads on topic? This one is about Lindy's interview. If you all want to relive the Miller/Lucic inident - there are old threads you can dig up on that.

We've had success in the past running a goalie in response to our goalie getting run. I don't prefer it, but it's happened succesffuly.

Bob Probert ran over Tom Barasso twice in one game at Joe Louis Arena. Much like the Lucic incident, who did we have on our team that was going to dissuade Probert from doing it again? The response.. Kevin Maguire returns the favor to Patrick Stefan. Chaos ensued, but Barasso wasn't touched again by a Red Wing.

Can someone please clarify exactly what Ruff said when he "mentioned Finley" after the Miller/Lucic incident question?

And to respond to someone else's question, no, I do not see him moving to forward.

I think he was using him as an example that there already is a potential enforcer in the system; i.e., that the team needn't acquire one through FA, draft, or trade.

Oh and I like that Ruff mentioned Tropp. Everybody here's been relegating him to the 4th line or right off the roster and I actually want him to stay right where he is.

I seriously do not give two shakes what happens to Drew Stafford. I don't think it matters. Take him off the line, don't care. But my money is on him coming back next year and stinking it up again like always.
