QFT. what does make their brand of play boring, however, is how their defensive zone play is based on collapsing four or even five guys to the shooting lanes from the point once a shot is expected to come in and how their offensive play is based on grinding out a goal with chip and chase (no beef there from me) and then sitting back in a neutral zone trap taken straight from the the pre-lockout devils playbook.

I don't like the trap or collapsing, but it is at least within the written rules of the game. I have a different complaint. If there appears to be a chance at a rush, you can tackle, maul and impede the players without the puck. The same exists in front of the net. One shot and tackle anyone who has a chance at a rebound. Boston did that to Vancouver last year. I don't think that is within the written rules. Rule enforcement is pre-lockout and that is a problem for me. I also think it is one of the biggest problems for the Sabres as currently constructed.

fair deuce. and, fwiw, i have never suggested that what the blue shirts are doing is illegal (or even that it should be (but some published writers are calling for rule changes) (sorry no linkelage - saw it on da twitter))); i just maintain that it's ugly and dull, and generally not something that i will tune in to watch.

it's getting there, for sure (if it is not already there).

Didn't mean to imply that you said it was illegal.

Just what they need, more rules that they can subjectively enforce. If you could dump it in past the trap and not get impeded trying to enter the zone and win a race for the puck, it would help negate the trap in and of itself. That rule is already on the books as we both know and it's called interference. Holding players up is as much a part of an effective trap as blocking the passing lanes. Taking that away would pull teams out of the trap. Two minutes for interference would be a deterrent.

you didn't. nor did i intend to imply that you implied that i said it was.

wait -- what?

i think you're right.

is this being debated in another thread? i saw a piece on the hockey news (by a fella named ken campbell) who insists that what the rangers are doing is bad for hockey.

it appears that there's a lively debate on the subject -- kevin snow (who's affiliated with the sabres somehow?) tweeted this rejoinder:

I thought guys who blocked shots were considered "warriors." Now they're doing something wrong?

i dunno. i watched most of the second and a chunk of the third before falling asleep. the devils owned the second and were an entertaining team to watch. the rangers are not fun to watch.

also, as ghost intimated, i'm not sure that every team in the league (specifically our team) is capable of replicating the rangers' style of play. and i'm glad for that, frankly.

I think this article expresses my opinion.

Shot blocking hype is "the myth" Teams lay it out to block shots since the creation of the cup. I don't get caught up in the media hype. I've watched this for way too long. As I said above, these playoffs have a rule enforcement problem. Not a shot blocking problem. That is, if you love the game and think it is about speed and skill.

I remember the old days when guys blocked shots in the playoffs and didn't wear robo cop equipment and goalies had no masks or, at best, plexiglass and no padding under it. Bobby Hull's slapper was in the 90+ mph range in that era. Guys blocked shots in that era.

My complaints about the game I'm watching is the fact that the interference rule does not exist. The NHL should take it out of the rule book and quit embarassing itself.

Great game going on in Phoenix tonight. Both goalies are just wound up but LA gets on the board first as I type this.

Woo!

Mike Smith with a WTF wave

He's done that a couple of times this playoffs. Pretty funny.

I like this broadcast crew.

Agreed on the broadcast crew. They're doing a great job.

I almost feel bad for the Coyotes. They just don't have that one piece that would really let them match the Kings.

Man there was nothing Doan could do there to hold up on Lewis. Stupid play by Lewis.

Mike Smith took a whack at Dustin Brown during that 3 on 5 and the ref called offsetting minors (Brown for embellishment). That was utter BS. Mike Smith should get suspended for that.

I couldn't believe the embellishment call. Someone should give a ref a shot in the back of the knee and see how he feels.

The wind up on that slash should get him a suspension of some sort. But i doubt the player that is most valuable to his team is gonna be suspended this far into the playoffs

But the thing is, it was like that ALWAYS in the playoffs before the lockout, and 18 months after. That's what's great about the playoffs......it's a war. (And for those who hate analogies like that, it's a non-gendered, non-sexually oriented struggle for superiority).

That is why it has been easy to sit back and scaffaw at the construct and strategy of the Sabres. For 1.2% of the history of the NHL, Darcy had a team that could win big in the playoffs.

I don't think Doan or Hanzel will be suspended because on the Doan hit Lewis turned at the last minute and Hanzel doesn't have any history.

Now to what is pissing me off on why Phoenix doesn't a team. I'm sitting at work and decided to check out tickets for this game and a ton of tickets are available in the lower bowl. Even to the point, just for fun, I put in that I wanted 10 tickets and 4 sections become available for 10 tickets together. SAD.

Then to be watching the game at home on TV and hear very loud cheers for every LA goal and at the end of the game, not to mention the announcers mentioning it's only a 5 hour drive, (the NHL excuse for not being able to sell out your own building for a conference championship) to have so many Kings fan in the Yotes building is disgusting.

I doubt I could find Sabre tickets back home in a conference final without going to a scalper. The Phoenix Coyotes will be known as Bettman's Folly.

It's disgusting to see the Wings, Hawks, Leafs play here since any game in Phoenix is a home game for those teams.

It would be fascinating to see what kind of deal the NHL gave the new yotes owner to buy a team that gets more visiting fans then home fans at games and has never made money in Arizona.

After watching Penner on Carters 1st goal last night I would be happy if the Sabres took a shot on him, very happy indeed. Could be picked up for cheap no doubt and his a big guy who can fight through defensemen, something our team cant do at all.

Forgive me if this point was made already but do you think the NHL is drooling over a possible L.A. vs. N.Y. cup final?

PTR

I don't know about that - you may get a huge TV audience in the Tri-state area, but I don't know how well the Kings TV ratings would be if they made the Finals. The problem may be that the huge area between the coasts (and likely all of Canada) would give a collective yawn for an LA-Rangers Final. Actually, none of the four teams left excite me at all (and the rest of the US and Canada may feel the same). My only rooting interest is that the Cup goes to either the Devils or Blueshirts; If LA or Phoenix wins, that's one more team that got a Cup before the Sabres. (The list is pretty short already). Pretty sad reason to root for (or against) a team, but it is what it is.

That's what I like to hear. I hope the wagering public agrees with you if they meet up in the finals.

I'm sure they will. Hell, before the Conference Finals started they were favored to win it at 2-1 I believe, so even Vegas has bought in. I don't quite remember what the odds on the Rangers were, but I don't think they were too far behind.

I don't care about his size, or what he's done this postseason. The absolute last thing I want on the Sabres is another player with work ethic concerns. Going forward, I want the Sabres to focus big-time on getting guys who bring it as much as possible, rather than when they feel like it or when they're up for a contract.
