Fire Lindy Ruff NOW Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Round 2 goalies: Pekka Rinne 6'5 209 Mike Smith 6'3 211 Jonathan Quick 6'1 223 Brian Elliott 6'2 202 Martin Brodeur 6'2 215 Henrik Lundqvist 6'1 195 Braden Holtby 6'2 203 Ilya Bryzgalov 6'3 209 The NHL allows taller goalies to wear longer pads, so I do think it is an advantage to be taller. Of course, some guys (like Tim Thomas) play very well despite being less than 6 feet. jaroslav halak 5'11evgeni nabokov 6'0 tomas vokoun 6'0 jhonas enroth 5'10 jose theodore 5'11 jimmy howard 6'0 yeah i guess they are gettin bigger.
X. Benedict Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Definitely a lot of teams proving that defense-first is not a good model. A good mixture seems to be the ticket. Nashville had plenty of opportunities. Just couldn't cash them. If anything, except for the Philly-Pitt series there seem to be more of a dead puck feel to these playoffs IMO.

Of course, some guys (like Tim Thomas) play very well despite being less than 6 feet. The length of the pads means nothing. A 6'0 goalie is going to have the same pad lengths today that a 6'0 goalie had in 1980. It's the width of the pads that makes the difference. Compare the pads (both legs and upper body) and the blockers/catching gloves they have today to those of the past. That's your real size difference. The other more natural aspect to these increased goalie number is the techniques used by today's goalies. They know far better how to cut down angles than they did in the past. You couple that with larger equipment and you have much smaller shooting windows.

Today's NHL pads are 11" wide for all goalies per the new rules (http://www.nhl.com/i...ge.htm?id=26287). And, I assume most wear the maximum allowable blocker, chest, arm, pants, and catching glove sizes. So the point I was trying to make is the only allowable difference between goalies in today's game is pad length which favors the taller guys - a bit of extra reach and more coverage of the bottom of the net. I agree that today's equipment compared to what guys wore in the 80's and early 90's is certainly bulked up.
Weave Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 The length of the pads means nothing. A 6'0 goalie is going to have the same pad lengths today that a 6'0 goalie had in 1980. It's the width of the pads that makes the difference. Compare the pads (both legs and upper body) and the blockers/catching gloves they have today to those of the past. That's your real size difference. Length of the pads means a ton. Pads now are definitely longer than they were in 1980 for a 6'0" goalie. The difference is in the area above the knee, and the area on the upper side called knee risers. Compare photos of say, Tom Barrasso in his Blue and Gold years to pics of Marty Broduer or Mike Smith. The biggest difference you will see is that before pad size went nuts (about the time Barrasso was traded to P-burgh) you could see the entire length of Barrasso's hockey pants. Within just a few years the entire pant leg was hidden from view by longer pads. And even today a tall goalie like Smith still has most if not all of his pants hidden by the riser section of his goalie pads. Take a look at the attached pic. You can see very clearly that his pads extend a good 12" above his knee. Now that nearly every goalie in the league is a butterfly goalie that 12+" above the knee is a huge advantage. Even the tallest goalies wearing pads from the 80's couldn't cover post to post in the butterfly without leaving a 5 hole gap. Today, with the 12" extensions and wide knee risers a goalie like Smith or Rinne can effectively eliminate the entire lower area in a butterfy. Tommy B as a Sabre. Notice that his pads don't rise as high above the knee as pads do today (well, since sometime in the early 90's really), allowing his 5 hole to open up if he tries to cover post to post.
fan2456 Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Great post and illustration. Also notice how TB's jersey is more form fitting. The large loose jerseys help tie up the puck and reduce rebounds. This 2nd round sucks. No hitting, no scoring, no wide open offense. I blame the inconsistency of the officiating.......... rather the level of enforcement Bettman tells them to adhere to. The majority of the goals in the playoffs are lucky bounces off scrums in front of the net. Talent is being wasted on rugby type hockey. 66 games so far in the playoffs times 2 teams=132. Out of 132, 27 teams have scored 3 goals or more and 7 of those were in the Pens-Flyers series. 7 others needed OT to more than 3. It's turned into who has the most luck with the bounces over who has the most talent and desire. If changes aren't made during the offseason to open the game up it's going to be a boring season next year. Something we both agree on. However the Pitt./Philly series had some of the most piss poor goaltending I've seen in 40 years. Fleury's was by far the worst of two pathetic performances. I said neither of these teams could win a cup with that goaltending 3 games into that series. One of those rare occasions I might have been right. Really inflated Flyers offensive numbers. Briere coming back to earth at -6 for the playoffs. He could turn it around tonight.
millbank Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 if that wasn't charging I don't know what it was. He was also off his feet now they score.... garbage
TrueBlueGED Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 And Bryzgalov comes up humongous small right there.
millbank Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 And Bryzgalov comes up humongous small right there. yes i want to encourage him to continue..... good work. must admit it tough with teams remaining deciding who to root for. Kind of rooting for individuals rather than specific teams.......
darksabre Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 I really would love New Jersey to win this series. An ECF between NJ and NY would be pretty worth it. There's a LOT of hatred between those fan bases.

millbank Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 garbage on flyers part ragging on player laying on ice. I get it they saying Devil embellishing injury, but previous game and tonight clear cheap hits. They looking very bad with the talking over injured player. Had no vested interest coming in actually sympathetic support because of Briere. Now not liking flyers much at . It would look good on them to gone tonight.

Yup, that series was definetely an exception. All the rest have been pretty blah. A few exciting games here and there but nothing like last year.
bunomatic Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Nice spear by Little Danny Briere at the bench. Gamesmanship and cheapshots at their finest on display when a team seems to know the end is near on their cup dreams for another year. I still love Brieres heart though. Man wants to win.
Marvelo Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Does Laviolette have the mange or is he ripping his hair out? Sheesh, wear a hat or something.
Iron Crotch Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Does Laviolette have the mange or is he ripping his hair out? Sheesh, wear a hat or something. Laviolette needs some spray hair! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GeF7A05zQ8
TrueBlueGED Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Does Laviolette have the mange or is he ripping his hair out? Sheesh, wear a hat or something. He should just be a man and shave it. As should Ruff, and just about every other guy who is half bald anyway. If I ever get a badly receding hairline or thinning hair to the point spray hair would be a viable option...I'm done, it's all coming off.

bunomatic Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Briere -8 in the 2012 playoffs. Not surprising the way Philly was letting in goals in round 1. I'd bet that the guys Philly puts out when the bench is shortened are all -
