Locker cleanout day

I said it in another thread, I want a different type of player at #3 center. I think it would be a good ploy to trade Roy for the center with those attributes. I won't send this thread into a tailspin by expanding upon it.

Yeah, I heard you in the other thread. I think much of the NHL is going with the Foligno-Ennis-Stafford type of line. LR likes his three scoring lines, just sayin'.

I like Hecht too. But his concussion problems have me worried. I'm not sure he's long for the NHL anymore.

Bring him back for $1 mil as a depth player, who can play or can sit - easy

Agreed and it's unfortunate. Still, if Connolly can make it through a season anything is possible. I'd like to see what they can do to keep him around. It's hard to say what is possible.

One thing is for sure.. you get to see the human side of the game and it's tough. It's tough to root against anyone really. Hecht's is a bit more difficult to watch.

Roy doesn't seem a fan of Ruff's coaching. But it sounds like he has good points.

The atmosphere in the locker room seems good - they all seem to like each other. Maybe it is just we need a skilled heart player to give everyone a bar to try and strive for

Most players don't like getting called out in public, or having a demanding coach. But if I had to guess, most coaches don't like lazy players they need to keep harping on to do the right things and give more effort. It really goes both ways.

Roy didn't seem to mind having a demanding coach. He seemed to not see the point in calling a player out publicly (he didn't mind behind closed doors)

He said that a coach should show you videos and say this is why you didn't score or this is why you let a goal in etc. and then the reporter said does Ruff do that and he replied with "Well there are different ways to coach"

Also, Ennis seemed to light up when asked about playing centre and said how much he enjoyed those games - nice to see

Outside perspective--- really nothing new, but the story has been picked up by Puck Daddy's Greg Wyshynski:

Lindy Ruff vs. the Buffalo Sabres core:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/lindy-ruff-vs-buffalo-sabres-core-174813748.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

To flesh out a bit what ThirtyEight posted above from Roy:

Roy said he and Ruff have a good relationship, and that he feels the criticism is constructive: "He expects a lot of me. To be the hardest working player on the team," said Roy.

But he also said that during the course of a season, players have highs and lows and that "you need somebody to tell you what you're doing wrong." Roy mentioned coaches using video clips to break down their games, explain what needs adjusting.

Does Ruff do that?

Roy sighed and looked to the ceiling. "I mean, there's different ways [to coach]."

If they can't take the public criticism, maybe they should go play tee ball. Many coaches call out their star players. These guys are paid millions to win games for their fans, if the coach feels they aren't performing as they should then they deserve to be pointed out on camera for the fans to see. If you gave me $4 million a year, you can say whatever you want about me on TV. If some of these players are too mentally weak to handle the criticism because it hurts their feelings, maybe they should be somewhere else.

We all know that a healthy Roy can be a freakin' sick hockey player as far as skill goes. What if he's a third line center with Tropp and Kaleta?

I'd love to see a third line of Tropp, Roy, and Leino...let Kaleta and Gerbe (bring back Gaustad to play center with them, those 3 liked playing together) be the shut down 4th line

Thank you!!

These guys are MILLIONAIRES, just for playing a game. I love playing hockey for free, let alone getting a check for it. Hell, give me 4.5 million a year and ruff can give me a weekly shot to the balls in public and I wont make a peep about it. I feel that everyone knows that I've become less of a ruff supporter over the years, but that doesn't let individual players off the hook, its time for out guys to "nut up and shut up" maybe if they played harder, thed be preparing for a game tomorrow instead of whining on locker cleanout day.

But has Ruff called out Roy in public? Seems like he's always calling out Vanek instead.

This season? Not really. Seasons past? Absolutely. He was Ruff's go-to guy for public criticism for years.

Love reading about all the disappointment and then the "embarrassing" quotes from Miller. The coaching staff should replay all the interviews before the opening game next season.

That goes for just about any high-profile profession. It can bring out the best or worst in them.

I don't blame Ruff one bit for calling out Roy. How many penalties did he take because he just stopped moving his feet and decided it was easier to impede with his stick? He should also try out for the Canadian Olympic diving team. And for a guy who can create shots, he shoots like a beer-leaguer.

Deal him if we can. But I suspect the rest of the league knows he is a fraud, especially come playoff time. Hope his locker-cleaning comments hasten his exit.

This teams needs grit at center. A Micheal Peca-type guy. Drives me nuts. Ruff's coaching style is only successful with outstanding goaltending and sandpaper guys (McKee, Curtis Brown, Dixon Ward, Drury, Warrener). It's got to be incredibly disappointing for him to see such skilled players make so many bad decisions. Is a more easy-going coach going to help them stop making turnovers and giving away the puck at the blue line?

My wrath is on the players this year. Messages need to be sent by cutting out some of the cancerous core.

Sure does. It's takes thick skin to be a professional athlete if only just for the media scrutiny. It also takes a strong will to suck it up and deal with the ups and downs of a long season. Some are better at it than others. But a coaches job isn't just to win games, it's getting his players to perform so the coach himself keeps his job. So I have no problem with Lindy calling out his players. My only problem with him is the frequency he calls them out. As has been mentioned he was pretty lenient on Roy this year and worse on others. Be consistent! If you're going to bench Vanek for a couple of bad penalties, then bench Roy too.

Laziness or lack of effort are common complaints towards some players on the Sabres. I'll bet that we wouldn't see that problem, if they were called the "Machetes."

Even the "Daggers," would be harder working that some old relics that have to stay in their cases, or museums, or ships at the bottom of the ocean. A Machete is way harder working than a Sabre.

So if Roy was injured so much of the time, and he was producing so little this season, why did Ruff have him on the ice so often? He had the 6th highest time on ice of the entire roster, and the 2nd highest offensively, with an average TOI of 19:19. The only offensive player with slightly more ice time was Pommers at 19:41

Roy also had the 2nd highest total of games played for the season - 80. Only Pommers played more games - 82.

Something doesn't add up - either Roy is BS'ing about the injuries, or Ruff is an idiot for putting a player with a chronic hamstring injury on the ice so often, and futilely when he was clearly not pursuing and not producing.

Does anyone really see Roy and Ruff on the same team this fall after these comments?

This is Buffalo - Yes.

From Vanek's blog about why he's not playing for the National team:

"There are too many little injuries that hamper me. My chest’s been hurting since January, I have an ankle-sprain and the shoulder’s also not completely a hundred percent. I’m just glad that I don’t need any surgery, but I do need a few weeks away from the ice to let all those little nagging injuries heal themselves."
